Reminds me of Katie Holmes apparently declining to do The Dark Knight to do Mad Money, which of course turned out to be a horrible bomb, although the jury's still out regarding what was really happening behind the scenes there.

There can be various penalties to breach of contract up to and including financial liability.
But it would depend on the contract itself as the details would be negotiated. Especially at the level of Marvel and the Agency that an actor like Evangeline would use.

For the most part, the primary reason multi-picture contracts are drafted up is to ensure an actor's commitment to an ongoing film franchise, both in regards to their obligation to the project, as well as to take care of potential scheduling concerns down the road. If a certain star suddenly decides to desert a franchise halfway through, it not only screws with continuity, it can drastically affect the commercial appeal of the franchise...think if Jennifer Lawrence just decided to desert the Hunger Games franchise halfway through, or if Mark Hamill just didn't feel the need to show up for The Last Jedi because he felt his heart wasn't really in it anymore. In both cases, the fallout would be pretty disastrous, so legally, the studios do everything they can to prevent that from happening.
In most cases, in regards to the way in these contracts are written out...if an actor decides to just leave a project without a viable reason (serious health issues, a personal tragedy), they'll be immediately sued for a previously established amount of money, which will be non-contestable in court following such a public breach of contract. Due to certain kinds of gentlemen's agreements however, there have been examples of non-essential actors walking away from such franchises after signing such contracts...even within Marvel, such as Hugo Weaving as Red Skull. However, in that example, Skull was primarily a special effects-driven character who was already killed off in an ambiguous manner at the end of his first appearence...in addition to the fact that Marvel didn't have any solid plans for the character, anyway. But for an actor like Lilly, who's already locked in for a leading role in her own individual franchise (her character's name is even the title), for the most part, she couldn't just "walk away" from the role without expecting severe push-back from the studio in the form of legal repercussions, given how it would negatively impact the franchise she's attached to. It's a potential scenario these contracts are literally based around, and as a consequence, it's what keeps such a large variety of A-List actors like the Marvel cast lined up for such a long-term commitment. Otherwise, any of these actors could just walk whenever the mood would strike them, which would render such contracts absolotely worthless.

Which was kind of ambiguous. I thought you guys were on Lilly's complaints regarding Hope's role in the original movie and how she would walk if they were repeated for the sequel.
But like I said, my bad! Doesn't change my arguments about multi-picture contracts in general, but in regards to that specific example with Lilly, I'm sure Marvel would have released her from the contract if she hadn't even started shooting, so you guys would be right about that.

Even IF you're talking about comments made before Ant-Man... the context doesn't actually change much if she had already signed the contract to appear. Especially as having to replace her last minute would have been a financial loss to Marvel.
She still gets sued in either case. That doesn't mean her request has no leverage though, as generally you want to be accomodating so that everyone stays on good terms. Which is why I wrote "request" rather than "demand" as I seriously doubt she "demanded" anything. It would be starting out a multi-film contract on a bad foot.

This is true and something I didn't consider. It all depends on the specifics of the contracts. Makes it hard to speculate.
That is such a badass moment for Cap, though doesn't make sense in the MCU.
Unless we get Eric O Grady or some sort of Thunderbolts Antman. Its a great moment.
