Star Wars Battlefront II |BETA| Execute Pre-Order 66

Feels decent, although its been a while since I played a DICE game (BF3).

I had no idea this game had a third person mode.... well I knew hero characters had this, but I had no idea it could be toggled anytime. lol I played it for like 8 hours before I discovered this in the key binds.

In theory third person should have its advantages, but somehow I prefer first person still.

Flight controls make no sense having played plenty of flight sims in the past. I don't understand them whatsoever.

I guess I'm just a huge Star Wars whore, but I'm enjoying it. There's obvious flaws, but I still find myself having fun.

Don't like how lining up and making headshots feels, though. I guess I'm too accustomed to how great the cycler rifle is in the last game. Can't say I'll buy at launch or not...

I'm sure I've said it a few times before, but I just wanted them to bring back Sabotage. That mode easily justified the Bespin DLC for me.

Weird graphics on Naboo. Why do the birds keep appearing out of nowhere?

Feels kinda shitty too. Just feels like a meat grinder as 40 players converge on one small capture point. Complete game of attrition at that point and feels like skill is almost meaningless.

Loved Administrator's Palace.

That was my favourite of the bunch as well. Especially when the Rebel team is trying to fall back to the landing pad, meanwhile you've got Vader, Palpatine and Boba all converging on the same location. The way those matches would eventually turn into meat grinders might not have appealed to everyone, but I loved how it just go progressively more intense as objectives started getting knocked out and more heroes came into play. Edit: I might go play more of that before my Plus expires...

Ok, so I played for a couple more hours and man, WTF DICE, why can't you launch a mode that's halfway balanced for both sides. The original launched with terrible balance on Walker Assault, and now Galactic Assault is just as bad on Naboo.

Phase 1 - The defenders have to stick their necks out to get the ion cannon and damage the MTT. Offense get's to sit back and camp the 2 Ion cannon points in each section. If they prevent even half of the cannons from being fired, it seems like Offense gets to coast to phase 2. Not fun.

Phase 2 - Tables are turned and now the attackers have to funnel in through a handful of narrow chokes, all while a limited number of response ticks away. Not fun.

Phase 3 - Storm the throne room, aka a one room shit show of grenades, cool downs, and heroes. Not fun.

The reason I liked Turning Point so much was that not only did it focus the battle on a few points, but it also avoided the stupid "this important thing is completely invulnerable until you do something else" mechanic that makes the Assault modes so annoying at times.

And man, does this game look rough on X1. The strike map has horrendous pop-in on the trees and shadows. I recorded a clip where I walked out the right side of the building and immediately noticed the forrest looked thin. Then over the course of walking 30ft the number of trees over doubled as they popped into view, followed by shadows shortly there after. It looked really, really ugly.

The lighting also looks noticeably worse in this game than it does in Battlefront 2015. It seems to be using the same lighting tech that Battlefield 1 is, meaning that it is all calculated in real time. It just seems totally flat in comparison to the pre-computed lightmaps and radiosity in the previous Battlefront game. Really hurts the overall look of the game. The shitty image filters that you can't turn off hurt it even more. The art deserves better than this. The draw distance on the Takodona map is pretty terrible as well.

Yeah, fuck this. They've injected and double downed on elements of Battlefield or other traditional shooters into Battlefront II that it never needed (namely changes to the gunplay and movement, class structures, equipment distribution, etc), and kept parts of Battlefront which were exceedingly awful (bottleneck level design).

They've made a game that is different enough from Battlefront that I can respect people who prefer it, but yeah, I'm out. I can't believe how utterly uncompelling I'm finding this beta compared to Battlefront 1. Had full intention to pre-order, now wont be picking it up unless I can get it cheap. I just don't see myself putting time into it at all.

EDIT: I mean, on a more ranty side of things, I literally cannot fathom who the fuck is designing maps like Naboo and some of Battlefront 1's worst bottleneck capture points. They're awful.

Gotta agree with pretty much this entire post. It's a damn crying shame, too. I was so fucking pumped for this game. It just feels like it went in completely the different direction than it needed to.

Yeah I think I'm done as well, I've played about two hours in total. Probably the least fun I've had playing a multiplayer game in years. I dislike literally every single design decision made in this game. It's a real shame because I adore Star Wars and I found old-school BF2 really fun, but this game is aggressively bad. I was really hoping for a fun new multiplayer game to sink my time into, but it's not this.

Back to Overwatch, I guess.

The menus are massively improved in this game than the 2015 game. Same layout, but it actually fits the Star Wars theme instead of a sterile visual design student portfolio from the first game.

2015's pre- and post match menus were infinitely better than the bullcrap that's in this beta, and that says something, cause the 2015 menus were bad to begin with. But then again, DICE are notoriously bad at designing a good menu/UI and a functioning one at that.

I've had awful performance on Xbox One, but I'm not sure if that's the game, the dashboard beta, or maybe just my launch day Xbox One finally dying.

what are the top 2 most expensive games?

1. CoD Modern Warfare 2 at $279m
2. GTA V at $272m

Lol, every single Battlefront game has had a third person view.
Yea haha what. 3rd person is way better in these games. I killed so many people today just by peeking.

I played it both on ps4 and pc, and although it feels better and plays better on PC, I really don't think the playerbase will be up there after launch, so I'll probably go with ps4 if reviews are good.

As a casual not that familiar with the first one...once you die, I'm finding the whole 'get kicked out for 10 secs to choose class and load in and rejoin again' a pretty shit experience.

Is there an option I'm missing to skip that?

No way to skip, you can spawn in early if you have a full squad of people also trying to respawn.

so I realized that targeting other player ships, while fun, is not the best way to play the Starfighter Assault map...targeting objectives seems to be the key to racking up the points

Seems to be the case for most modes unless it's Blast. Objective play suits my style more but it's not for everyone.

Graphically BF2 feels like a downgrade from BF1. The gameplay is ok but it felt smoother in part 1. I am sure this is the BETA but this close to release I am expecting the final product to look and feel like this. Speaking of experience that's how the final product will look and play like as open BETAs are more like demos.

Surprise!

That DICE spawn design.

They've completely forgotten how to make maps that play well at this point it seems like. Battlefield 1 had the same problem with maps being pretty to look at but otherwise being a poorly balanced mess.

There's a spot in phase 1 where clones spawn in the open. On the other side of the road you can sit there as a specialist and simply kill clones before they're even aware after spawning. Happened to me, I spawned in (specialist so lower health) and got 100-0'd in the blink of an eye due to 2 snipers having clear vision of that spot.

I disagree on the gunplay. It was terrible in the 1st one and many people agree. Anyone that thinks that is good gunplay is out of their minds lol. I guess I will still give the 1st one a try, but I honestly thought it was ridiculously awkward without hardly a damn control option to get comfortable. It was like fucking MAG or some shit and super weird. Coming from my exactly tuned settings of ever facet of the stick in BF1 I was like what and the hell is this peasant game... glad they at least gave a deadzone for the sticks LOL.

There are flaws with this game, notably huge technical ones that I hope get ironed out, but it has a lot of promise. They really need more control options like BF1 though. Just ridiculous they can't mimic that game where it counts.

BF1 has many great maps. It has some bad ones as well. Particularly maps like Tsaritsyn in Conquest are just pointless. But there are many great maps in BF1 dude.

Yeah, I went PS4 too in spite of having a very nice PC. I don't want to deal with hackers or population problems and yes I prefer my DS4.

I'll agree that the Xone version looks terrible, but eh what are you gonna do the hardware is bad. Games are moving on the X will be out soon enough.

Twice i've had enough points to spawn as Darth Maul hero and yet i've been unable to as someone had him for 80% of the match and getting 30+ killstreaks with him, awesome for him but sucks for me :(

Honestly, the birds the birds the birds lol. I get it that the idea is cool, but the game just seems like a really poor BF1 game in some areas. They really need to focus their efforts in the last month and the months coming after launch. It could still be a really good game.

Absolutely. The first time I loaded it up I actually laughed at loud. It's pretty bad for a major AAA studio. I have no clue what they were going for. It's not Halo 5 bad, but still felt off in a significantly unpleasant way.

Better than 2015, which is not saying much. I agree the controls are pretty weird with limited options for an apparent studio with a budget. BF1 feels more polished in every way. Battlefront 2015 is a terrible game by any gunplay standard IMO.

If not being able to put up with inaccurate, weak, "hardcore", grounded, boring, and garbage gunplay that features wet spaghetti noodles as lasers in BF II makes me "out of my mind" then so be it. With each shooter that gets released, they seem to move further away from what I value in them anymore. So I'm ultimately jealous of the crowd that is happy with these changes.

Game feels kind of blurry on Pro, finding it pretty hard to find the enemies at times.

I like it more than the first but that isn't saying much, I like that the weapons have kick to them now. However something about it just feels like I'm going through the motions. Wish it was more like Battlefield honestly, I never played the originals so I have no idea if this is any indication of what they were like. I do like that you can roll around and dodge, though the game really feels like you kill one guy, one guy kills you, over and over again. I just don't find that style of gameplay very enjoyable.
