Pacific Rim Uprising - Trailer 1

No original cast?
I hate when that happen

Charlie Day and Burn Gorman are clearly shown in the trailer. I also thought I heard Rinko Kikuchi was in it, but maybe that was just rumors? I hope Max Martini shows up in some form, considering the insinuation that he would replace Idris Elba's character and become defacto leader, but haven't heard anything about that.

Rinko is briefly in the trailer too

I enjoyed PR a lot even though the movie did it's damnedest to try and bring it down with shitty acting. I think it's because of the designs and the fact that they're fighting outside but this kind of looked like Transformers to me in a way. :/

Oh missed that. Looks like I need to check it out again. Got a time stamp?

Earlier in this thread people were thinking this was her on the right

If that's incorrect, she has been confirmed to return regardless

Terrible music choice for the trailer. Yikes.

Sort of a shame that the CG looks worse in this one than the original. I know they were hiding a lot of it in the rain and darkness in the original, but that also made the original feel a lot more oppressive. Additionally they didn't overdo it with "magic effects" in the cockpits, which made them feel real and heavy. You might as well have called the first film HEAVY. Everything had a ton of weight to it. It worked.

There are a lot of choices here that make things look a lot shinier but also less real. Looks like an overuse of effects in the cockpits. Lots of magic light circles and useless color effects. Things seem to move with not enough inertia.

As somebody who loved the original, I'm hopeful but not optimistic.

This is missing....something, but I can't put my finger on it. Pacific Rim was the perfect blend of corny and endearing. This seems to swerve too far to corny.

Kinda my feeling on the matter right now. Will still watch it regardless to show support.

With all the commotion around this trailer, I tried watching the first one.

Which only served to confirm once more that I don't like kaiju movies.

Music did not match the trailer at all. Yikes.

It still looks pretty good. It's giant robots smashing giant lizards in the face, lighten the fuck up people.

The genre isn't limited to generic action though, it's fair for people to expect more from it. The original never went beyond just "pretty good" territory, but it was rich with a visual flair.

Saw it before Blade Runner and yeah, the music choice did this no favors. Boyega seemed to be doing too much of an impression of the father, like a clone not a son. Was nice to see the scientists, who have grown on me with each viewing of Pacific Rim. They don't have the pull though compared to what hearing that Del Toro was directing again and returning with the Raleigh/Mako duo might have. Still, curious what more can be shown to get interest building.

I'm still gonna watch this as I loved Pacific Rim and have a bunch of the NECA figures.

But, Pacific Rim is like the original Japanese version. This looks like the American remake.

I rewatched the first movie last night, and while I still love it, holy hell is it riddled with plot holes and inconsistencies. I'm hoping they put a lot more focus on the writing, because it was a pretty obvious weak spot in the first. I'll probably end up going to see it regardless. I love the premise too much to avoid it.

Well it can't be any worse than the first one

Well unless there is more bizarre stereotypes played for laughs and not remotely funny

Edit never mind I watched it again and it looks so much worse

Music's fine. The problem is it feels completely different from the first and I believe that's explained by the massively reduced budget.

I agree that the jaegers lack presence. Watching the knifehead and otachi fight, gypsy danger (and all of the robots) had a lot of moving parts. These robots are the size of skyscrapers, every action they took was a huge undertaking as all the gears and metal plating shifted with each movement. Seeing the mechanisms in gypsy dangers elbows spin up as it's arms are raised, seeing its entire body bob and shake every time it takes a step.

The problem with this movie is that it betrays the first movie by removing this. The giant lizards are the organic ones, humans aren't that big, so we made mountain sized machines to fight them. And since they're so big, those machines have millions of moving parts inside them. That's why it's so difficult to raise both of gypsy dangers arms in the knifehead fight. Every action requires a huge amount of energy.

This can't be waved away with a few years of tech advancements. It's a huge part of the universe and something Del Toro himself has said is a huge part of the robots designs. And I don't believe for one second that it's something the current team would have abandoned if they had the money to animate all of it.

It's possible to make sleek and futuristic looking robots without making them look and feel so unrealistic.

I don't blame the people working on the movie though. Like i said, the music was great and Boyega is doing a good job. The main character in the first movie did a less than stellar job with the role. So it's nice to see someone else getting a shot. But it's still painfully obvious that the budget is holding them back in areas that made the first movie so great.

Hmm, I still do not understand the complaints about the music.

Still feels remarkably on point to me.

Entirely within the context of the sort of film this is trying to be of course.

It looks like a Power Rangers movie now. That last shot where the camera pans to each of them was fucking atrocious. So stilted and Saturday morning cartoons looking. The city behind them looks like cardboard from a school play. I'm expecting a 300: Rise of an Empire situation where it's fun enough but a cheap imitation of the original in the end.

I'll never understand the complaints behind the choice of music in this trailer. It only makes me curious about the music of choice for many of the complainers.

that 2pac song was used pretty well in Django Unchained. pretty idiosyncratic choice for a western though but it was a hype moment.

this trailer, eh the music wasn't the problem. movie itself looks cheap and awful. I like that Boyega is more of a tough guy in here though, using his own accent too. reminds me of his Attack the Block character.

also damn Charlie Day looks like a completely different person when he shaves haha.

The feeling I get from the trailer is that this will be even weaker or on par with the first film in terms of relatable, interesting leads. I didn't much care for anyone in the first film, but loved the action sequences.

At least it's showing a set-piece daytime battle, which is a refreshing change. The visuals atm do look worse than the original, but there's time to tighten it up I suppose.

The biggest blow to the sequel is that Del Toro isn't directing; him getting a producer credit could easily mean nothing, seeing how the script he worked on was rewritten a couple times over.

For what it's worth, he's pretty active on Twitter and I do not believe he has acknowledged this trailer in any way.

The song wasn't used well in the trailer, doesn't really mean the song is bad.

The script was one the weakest parts of the first movie, so Del Toro's presence or absence is not really relevant to that aspect of the film.

Where Del Toro is missed is with the direction and set design and overall aesthetic.

Having less money is also a pretty huge issue as well.

Why would complaints about using rap music for a sequel to a movie which even its trailers featured heavy guitar riffs is hard to understand?
It just felt off really. Doesn't help the moody fights and heavy aesthetics of the robots are gone.

Because the music seems to fit the sequel which itself seems to be a huge departure from most of the aesthetics and decisions of the first movie.

Well, the music used in the trailer was more a medley than anything else.

And I disagree, it was used pretty well.

It's unfortunate then it uses Pacific Rim name. Maybe should've gone with something else, like I dunno...Robot Jox 3.

I really enjoyed the first film solely because of Guillermo Del Toro particularly because of his style and influences really shone through despite it's mediocre script. Now it doesn't even have the best thing about what made Pacific rim great and it really shows in this trailer. The designs and cinematography are just a massive step down even comparing to the first pacific rim trailer.
