Ta-Nehisi Coates to write Storm comic for Marvel

During New York Comic Con, journalist and author Ta-Nehisi Coates hinted that a new standalone series focusing on the X-Man Storm might be in the works with artist Jen Bartel. Earlier today, that news was confirmed by reporter Dawn Fallik for the Philadelphia Inquirer.

Reports that a Storm solo book might be in the works began floating around NYCC last Friday, when Marvel Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso didn’t rule out the possibility during a Q&A.

A longstanding member and occasional leader of the X-Men, Storm has starred in three different comic series, but only recently got her first and only standalone courtesy of Greg Pak and Victor Ibáñez, which ran for 11 issues from 2014-2015. Ororo Munroe has been making appearances in Coates’ first Marvel series, Black Panther, where she has been attempting to mend the relationship with her former husband, T’Challa. She could also be seen fighting alongside him in the short-lived Black Panther and The Crew series.

Jen Bartel’s artwork can be most recently seen on an issue cover of Marvel’s America series, as well as Jem and the Holograms.

I like TNC but I don't like how he's the owner of all things African American now. He's an essayist, not a comic book writer.

As a
white male
nerd/geek that never got into American comics, I actually have the first two BP issues in my Amazon cart.

Not sure if he's owner of all things African American now, but an amazing writer taking on comics was enough to get me interested.

Same with Gaiman.

This isn't any different from Donald Glover stretching from comedy to acting (comedy and drama) to rapping. If TNC is good at multiple things by all means let him stretch his wings.

So I guess this will be my first time reading something by TNC since I haven't checked out his Black Panther run. I'm not done yet with the Priest run, that's why ;P
I hope it's good. Storm has never had much luck outside of the X-Men but she's a great character.

Fixed that for you. Not counting wolverine because he is a very much his own thing, the longest running solo x-men book was Gambit's series. Thats a shame.

Coates is a fantastic writer in general, but I tried the first arc of Black Panther and it really didn’t draw me in. I’ll still give Storm a shot.

I liked what I read of that series but yeah... I think it underlines how fundamentally well-balanced the core X-teams are. Well, most of the time. The characters work so well with each other that there's always something missing when they're by themselves.

But I very much like Bishop as a solo character. His 90s mini was one of my first comics, it was dope. And so was District X. I'm not too sure what he's doing these days, I'm only reading Astonishing.

Should have given it to Nnedi Okorafor, but I'd guess they're trying her out on a Black Panther mini first before giving her a whole series.

hyped for this, his time with her in BP & the Crew was great

Good the last Storm series was Uber Trash

Keep her away from Black Panther

that was Hudlin that hooked them up, right? never felt like there was a game plan there

How was his Black Panther run?

really great if you're down for what feels like the most Wakanda lore i've seen since Mcgregor, i thought
a few on here didn't seem to dig it cause it kinda nerfs t'challa a bit, but the stories have been good

Thats a good thing, the industry needs different views more then ever

exactly - we need more folks from different mediums here, not less

that's about the definition of the x-men for me though - they make a great team (sometimes) and looked cool in the day on trading cards, but anything longer than a cleremont single-issue story on one of them felt dragged out, like they can't carry it.

i was a huge wolverine fain in the day & had every issue of the first volume of his book and i gotta say, my love of adam kubert art aside, there's like a dozen good issues in there

I don't think this guy is a good comic book writer. And why are they giving Storm to him? Because she's black?

trash post

personally, i dug the dora milaje stuff of World of Wakanda & would love to see Roxane Gay get a title

That'd be okay, too. Nnedi is going to be doing a comixology special with Black Panther and I just hope she does more work because I love her fiction.

I'm not a fan of Coates' Black Panther, but he's still a refreshing voice and a needed talent at Marvel. I'll definitely give his Storm a shot.

The problem is Marvel doesn't get enough black creators. A black woman should be writing this.

100% agreed, but fuck - they're so bad these days, that stupid promotion last week almost lost us g willow wilson. i would've kicked down all the magazine racks

I think they need to do a new Cap and Falcon tour America book. Cap needs to get his feet back under him and win back the people, and who's a better tour guide for that than Falcon? And it would let Coates talk about the stuff he wants to talk about.

Cap and Falcon fighting Nazis in Charlottesville. Cap and Falcon busting up corrupt developers destroying urban landscapes. Cap and Falcon fighting dirty cops. I would read that book with Coates on it.

i would have an amazon notice setup for when the omnibus preorder went up for sale
it would sadly be on the cheap side since the book would get canceled at 6 issues

That must be it... couldn't be anything else

jesus...

As a completely untested comic book writer known for his work on cultural and civil rights he gets put on a book that focuses exclusively on prominent black characters.

So yes, I think that's exactly what this is.

Regardless, I find his comic book work to be dull. Perhaps some of his ideas and input regarding characterisation might be good but as a main writer? Marvel can do much better.

was just thinking what it would be like if Shondra Rhimes took a crack at a Storm limited series. I couldn't even wrap my brain around how awesome it would be and how much that would sell...

Knowing current marvel it would sell 11-15k a month and abrupty change from an ongoing to a mini 2-3 issues in and then marvel would claim it was always a mini.

So how does this work exactly, does TNC pick these or?

Generally a writer pitches an idea to an editor and if the character is free, and the editor likes the idea, and the company is looking for another book, they do it. Sometimes editors approach writers with a character, though, and ask if they have anything decent for them. This is more common when the person is a creator outside of the traditional industry.

Love Storm, hopefully this is good. Also hopefully its a run that shows off her powers. One of my biggest gripes about solo series for the not AAA tier "on every team" characters is they are so focused on personality that the super powers take a backseat in a super power story.
