Sony becomes the top earning mobile game company in Japan

I'll never understand the Fate series.

On the internet it's porn.

On the anime is some edgelord's fantasy battle royale.

On mobile is waifu lootboxes.

🤔

Type Moon franchises are a lot of things at once, none of them easily explained to the uninitiated unfortunately. :l Its frustrating but understandable why these things are so unique

What a weird situation, it kinda shows that Sony's still a bit of a structural mess if they can be the number 1 mobile company but have barely any of it due to their actual game division.

Depending on who you ask, it's a strength and not a weakness.

Freedom for distinct business divisions to pursue and explore business opportunities that do not necessarily align with global strategy/etc of specific business units within the company umbrella is what allowed games like FGO to come out anyway.

If PlayStation was in the board room when approval to fund/publish FGO was greenlit, I would not be surprised if it would've been rejected since it's not an internal IP and is not an IP that would fit the mold of being a global success.

In many ways, it's probably why ForwardWorks is set-up the way it is. Its own business unit within PlayStation that does not conform to any of the normal business expectations and tendencies of the broader PlayStation business.

As far as ForwardWorks goes, didn't Everybody's Golf do fairly well when it launched? I assume it's dropped off a lot since then if ForwardWorks is doing that poorly?

Everybody's Golf is doing alright in terms of total download base. Its challenge is maintaining high gross, since it's apparently not very well-designed in terms of monetisation.

I'm honestly legit surprised. I thought Cygames was up there but don't even see them listed. Weird, given how big a powerhouse Cygames is now, no?

Edit: Unless Cygames is part of Cyberagent. That could be it. I don't know enough in that realm.

I just finished the Rome campaign yesterday.

That umu shit was so adorable and strangely appropriate that I'm thinking about spending money on SQs now.

I want Nero as my team's Saber, but she's probably super rare.

Gonna end up blowing a ton of cash until I finally summon her...

:/

Wait for a rate-up.

Cygames is a subsidiary of Cyberagent, yup.

Yes, they are part of CyberArgent. Mobile revenue doesn't show everything for Cygames as Granblue is mainly a browser game (available on Mobage, Gree, DMM and Yahoo). Same for Shadowverse which is also available on DMM and Steam.

They technically took the spot in August, but now that it's held through to September with increasing revenue from Madoka, they're potentially set up for some long term dominance.

This is driven by Fate/Grand Order, the #1 top grossing mobile game in the world right now, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica Side Story: Magia Record, which to my understanding is like Fate/Grand Order, but for Madoka.[/IMG]

Iwakami/Aniplex continues to win, many congrats to them - Magia Record sticking around is good for cultivating the IP (4th movie maybe at this rate lol). Also considering that F/GO is going into VR, arcade card game and so on the franchise will make money for many years to come.

After last year's top effort, Bamco are still sticking around at #2 but it's difficult to re-top the charts with Aniplex's effort.

In fact it's a bit funny that 7 of Sep 2016's Top 10 are in Sep 2017's Top 10 by gross revenue.

So basically Fate waifus are best waifus.

When the history books are written, F/GO will be one of the cornerstone case studies for mobile gacha in Japan. Especially so given with it's 10m+ userbase, it had topped global top revenue last month.

Yeah, they're under Cyberagent. Their top games are still doing strong, but they'll need continual output and hits to keep up with the top competition.

On the other hand, FEH in top 100 is still good considering the competition and I feel that the market has grown enough to support all these top games.

Good points and yeah, I realised SIE probably never would've greenlit those games right after I posted. I agree that it's a good thing they're given the flexibility to take opportunities that they wouldn't with a more strict structure. But at the same time, I still don't think it's a good long term strategy to basically have different divisions competing with each other in the same market.

Everybody's Golf is doing alright in terms of total download base. Its challenge is maintaining high gross, since it's apparently not very well-designed in terms of monetisation.

Thanks. Doesn't sound like much has changed since the last time we heard about it then.

I honestly can't make heads nor tails of it, either. And all the different variants make it seem so impenetrable as a whole.

But I can only assume that people aren't enjoying it as a whole body of work but merely bits and pieces, which leads me to assume it's not designed to be enjoyed as a whole body of work in the first place, more often than not.
Kind of like people who start watching a daytime soap opera and have no idea what's going on, get involved in the story, put it down for years and can just pick it up again later without thinking much of it.

So best I can figure is that it's a soap opera for waifu-obsessed nerds, with concurrent variations for every type of waifu-obsessed nerd, which is why it's so successful. And in the case that I'm right, I was right to take a hard pass on it.

Fate is basically an urban fantasy franchise of which its main hook is the focused concept of summoning legendary heroes into the modern era to partake in a battle royale.

Its utility of legendary heroes into its lore allows it to be all of the things listed above.

For the mainline series, a character-focused action-drama story set with its unique battle royale of heroes hook.
For the spin-offs, an excuse to expand the scope of the mainline series in comedy/other characters/etc.
For the mobile, an excuse to 10x the number of legendary heroes into desirable waifus/husbandos for whales and gacha.

I don't think F/GO will maintain that number 1 for now.
They had 2 very desirable gachas in a row. In August there was the Summer event (bikini waifus) and 2 year anniversary (guaranteed SSR unit with paid gacha). Last month there was a gacha for the most powerful unit, which is limited.

We're two months away from the New Year, where there'll be another SSR paid gacha promo, and I'm thinking they will drop a time-limited SSR of [new character introduced in EoR] as well, which will print $$$.

And then after that we will probably have the final EoR chapter; and then it's summer again after that... and then it's probably FGO 2.0 after that.

The pipeline of content for FGO is rock-solid for the next year. And again, they're doing this well without exhausting all the cards in their hand.

I don't like gacha games too much but Fate/Grand Order is very good I prefer it over Fire Emblem Heroes

Not surprised this is done by Sony Aniplex and not Sony Interactive Entertaintment. The latter has shown often wnough that they have no fucking clue how to deal with the mobile market.
