I really don't understand the lengths people are going to defend the removal of the standard single player mode. Add features all you want but don't take the part of the game away I've enjoyed for years.

It's gone in a different direction, it was clear from the demo and some of us enjoyed the demo a great deal. Some of us are happy with the new direction having tried it. It's ok if you don't, things change from time to time and all you get left with is good memories.

What? It's not 2002. You think most people are buying a game like Overwatch and are being blindsided by it being online only? GT Sport has has been marketed on its change to an online product, anyone who cared are well aware.

Inside the hardcore who follow the game before release, maybe. .but GTS is seen as the next GT to the masses. Also the GTS threads were full of people saying the game has a stronger online focus but the single player was robust and defending it. So there's that.

To simplify, takes advantage of the pvp nature of the game, usually something running actively that is modifying the communication between the clients and the server. Rather than something that has simply modified the values in a savefile. Easier to do on PC, you have to do a whole roundabout thing on consoles which is why it's not as prevalent.

Being forced online where you previously weren't, is a legitimate gripe to have. Especially when that reason is to allow people to (almost) get a FIA license.

Sorry, but I don't think allowing something as enjoying offline or saving offline is an overreaction at all.

Are you sure about that? ;) The AI drivers in both Forza and GTS has smashed me left and right, it's super stressful to be too close to them since you never know when they'll hit you and spin you off the track. Project Cars 2 is apparently better but I haven't played real races enough to confirm that myself.

But I get what you're saying, offline you won't have to deal with douche gamers. I'm an offine gamer too. One of the reasons I'll sit on the fence this time even though I'm a big fan of the previous games. From my point of view they've destroyed everything GT stands for, the big campaign, car collecting and upgrading. Hopefully they add this stuff later on so I can jump off the fence.

i don't even care so much that 90% of the game is locked behind an online connection. what kills me is that even in the one mode that you -can- play offline, you can't even use with all of the tracks and cars (and there aren't even that many to begin with!). if i want to drive nurburgring out of the box with custom conditions, online or off, i'm SOL.

as far as i am aware, no other purported racing sim willfully locks off tracks and cars behind arbitrary rank requirements. it's clearly not something that was mandated by FIA, so what is the point?

i'm still in, since sport mode is basically iracing lite and that is incredibly appealing, but some of the choices around the arcade mode are just baffling

I understand. It does sound like having server values can still be tricked in those cases. Maybe harder than to modify a save game though.

Yeah, the Nurburgring is a level 20 unlock. Have no idea how long that will take me, as it depends upon earning racer XP which is kind of nebulous, and as you'd expect each level takes a lot more than the previous one to unlock. But there are also all kinds of weird secondary objectives (driving X amount, spending X mileage on items, completing X event, etc) you can complete that offer up various amounts of bonus XP, so I really have no practical idea of how long this road is.

One thing it has done is get me to spend time on the other tracks I may not have, and try to master them, and it applies a level of progression for those who might otherwise miss the career modes of old. So at least in the early going I can see a reason for it, and can run with that reason. If the grind gets to the point where it feels out of reach I'll change my tune.
 
Some of the arguments here are just a plain joke.. Damn.. Comparing an iconic offline/single player franchise, like Gran Turismo with an new franchise online/multiplayer game aka Overwatch... just to justified this shit is just insane. BTW, is a shame, because i loved the driving physics of this game... But i thought this was just because the beta state.

I think it's an overreaction from some people when they are saying the game is trash and shitting on it because I always took that the game was going to be online required for progressing because it was different from a mainline GT. I'd hope if there is a mainline GT than it wouldn't have this requirement but for something like this I don't see the issue. I can see why people are dissapointed and it's fair for them to be but I think this was mainly communicated and I never played the beta and only read a few updates on the game itself.

Fair enough. But Overwatch is a new game on its own. GT is a franchise, everybody expects GTS to have SOME sort of offline game mode, otherwise, how do you explain the reactions on the first page?

People absolutely knew what Overwatch was.

This thread is proof that the message on GT Sport wasn't clear enough.

I think a lot of people assumed it was another "Prologue" style title. This is a very dramatic departure from the usual GT formula.

The vast majority of people wouldn't have hunted down the PS Blog article, Youtube videos, etc. They would have quietly anticipated the new GT game that was shown during E3 / GTS / whatever.

Unless it was called "GT Sport Online", I don't think they could have avoided this outcome.

People that are paying attention aren't saying this. No-one is saying the game is trash...unless I missed that one person.

The game is great. Losing or not gaining any progress (in single player content) because your internet or the servers go down would suck though.

Apparently adding that detail to the OP did nothing.

It seems more like a prologue to me from everything I've ever seen of it. So maybe it is but I never got that impression.

Agreed about it feeling more like a Prologue but their are comments from Kaz himself stating that this is basically "7".
 
I'm surprised about the outrage. Surely people would have already known by now. I knew, that's why I'm not getting the game.

Like, I can at least understand the other stuff, but I can't think of any explanation that would make me say "Ah ok, that actually makes perfect sense, good on Polyphony!"

Preposterous. Single\solo\alone\against AI - play should not depend on connectivity. No progression is saved at all? WTF.

It was bad when Ubisoft tried it back then with AC; it was bad with Hitman and it's bad now.

Possible save modifying is the only one that makes some sense. But as others have said it doesn't seem to be a problem for other devs who make similar games.

Ummmm, that's...what this is? Sounds like this is the best way and the easiest way to secure that. Why is this even a problem when people are literally going to be online all the time anyway?

- Servers can go down temporarily
- Your connection can get lost temporarily
- The online service will be discontinued at one point, rendering the game almost completely useless, even if you have the best internet connection in the world

Please stop saying this everyone. Obviously they did a POOR job communicating the online requirements of this game. Many people like myself purposefully avoiding reading previews , watching YouTube videos as to not spoil the final experience. Many people don’t fucking know what an FIA is. If you took the average PlayStation gamer who has played GT in the past it’s very unlikely they would know that this new version has such strict requirements.

You guys are basically victim blaming and it’s not cool. The fact that so many of you are pushing blame onto people who expected a similar to the past GT experience is just unreal.

The internet connection in my area has been shit lately. I would be totally out of luck if I was playing this game and my internet went down like it has been doing often.

Totally unacceptable, I'm glad I didn't preorder this game.

Yes.
But it saves every 15 minutes anyway so keep playing when the connection comes up it will save.

Clearly the player records are stored only on the servers. For what reason I don't know. they could have been a bit slicker about this like caching a copy and syncing maybe they will do so at some point. No biggie.

Sure, but there is a difference between a free demo and a $60 product wouldn’t you say. Also while I enjoyed the driving in the demo it did crash ~5 times trying to connect to servers I think. Not something I would want to pay for.

PD actually specifically sent out a notice in the demo as a heads up that the way the demo acts in regards to online requirement is not the way the final game is. And while technically true (since arcade mode is available offline in the final game, whereas you couldn't access it in the demo without an initial server check), I don't blame people for thinking that progress could be saved offline because it wasn't clear about that.
