Critics Consensus: Tomb Raider reboots the franchise with an more grounded approach and a star who's clearly more than up to the task -- neither of which are well served by an uninspired origin story.

Looks like it's back to the drawing board for video game movie franchise/universes.
I was kind of hoping it would be turn out good like Ready Player One or be hilariously bad, but it's just mediocre.

The difference between interactive media like video games, and media that requires docile bodies to consume like movies and television, is a difference that content creators have yet to figure out.

The Arkham games successfully created Batman games by understanding that a video game needs to be more than an adaption. Objectives, skills to unlock, secrets to discover, spontaneous events where players could intervene support the set pieces that we would see in film.

Live action movies will always struggle because video game characters are power fantasies who are animated.

I like the idea of a Tomb Raider film. But Alicia Vikander looks way too European for the role. They really need an English rose looking actress like Felicity Jones for the part.

Does that contribute to the box office?

I figure a lot of people will watch it free, but have a hard time paying a premium for it.

Yes. It is like buying a ticket through any normal method. The funds just come from the Movie Pass company when you buy the ticket. I’ll probably go see it Saturday morning.

Maybe that's why I think the first Silent Hill is the best video game adaptation so far (so adaptation of a specific game/series, so Wreck-it-Ralph doesn't count as it is its own thing) as the series is about survival rather than all out combat and the movie handled that generally well (too bad the 2nd film is ironically my least favorite movie ever. Not the worst movie, it just makes me so mad to see Silent Hill 3 treated that way).

It's by no means a perfect movie (the parts with all the cult members in one room doesn't feel Silent Hill-y) but it's actually a competent horror film. Having generally good sets representing the town and using Akira Yamaoka's incredible music from the games helped as well.

But yeah, in terms of this Tomb Raider, I'll wait to rent it. The first TR movie was a little below average to me but it wasn't terrible, but the 2nd one I couldn't even bother finishing. This one looks better than those two but I'm not in a rush to see it.

Or, speaking of Ready Player One, Olivia Cooke

Lara has no personality, even in the videogames she's just a bland character ... she's no nathan drake. The tomb raider franchise should have stayed a videogame franchise, though i have to agree with many that the Angelina Joli film was good ol' early 2000's dumb-fun.

The fact that it's an origin story sucks, the lead looks miscast, should've went with Camilla Luddington since she does the mocap/voice for TR2013/Rise and definitely looks the part for the role.

Even Crystal Dynamics wanted her. She was a live action actress long before she got involved with the series so I don't know why she wasn't approached first.
If you were casting a new Tomb Raider movie tomorrow, and you could have any actress that you wanted in the role, who would you be choosing to star as Lara Croft?
MB: Oh man, that’s a tough one. To be honest, I actually met [Lara Croft’s voice and motion-capture actor] Camilla Luddington and I think she’s fantastic in her portrayal of Lara. I wouldn’t mind seeing her have a crack at actually bringing the character to the on-screen. I think that’d be pretty cool. She’s really embodied a lot of what I feel like Lara is, even just in her voice. I’d love to see what she’d do with it on the big screen.

Yeah the Jolie ones are guilty pleasures for me. Unfortunately these ones take the semi-serious tone of the reboot, which in itself isn't a bad thing but this just doesn't sound all that interesting.
I'm still morbidly curious about it and wanted to go and see it but I can't convince anyone else to take the plunge with me.

From the trailers I've watched just now, the actress seems like a terrible Lara. She just seems a bit stiff or bored and lacking the presence needed. Might just be that the trailer misrepresents her.
To me Lara is an adrenaline junky and lover of mysteries, who prefers to operate alone, having great confidence, great intellect with a snarky and dry humor.

If you're gonna compare, the least you can do is provide photos of both on the set or both in compromising positions that the public eye wasn't intended to see.

You don't cast no name actors to lead $100M movies, generally. Vikander is an Oscar winner, so it gives the project some legitimacy, which is probably why they went with her over Daisy Ridley. But a studio isn't going to seriously entertain the idea of casting a video game mocap artist in a movie of this size over a name talent. It's a negative draw.

As for the movie, I'll wait for video.
Like I said before, you can totally tell the double pistol thing is the last scene in the movie. You ain't slick, Tomb Raider 2018.

Dunno why but I'm gonna watch this on the big screen. I know it will most probably another mediocre completely forgettable movie but the trailer got me hooked for whatever reason.

Before you guys hate on this movie, know it has the best rotten tomatoes rating for a video game film ever. I'd say its a miracle.

Cinematic games made movies about games factually redundant. If you're a smooth player you can already play through your moviegame and it's funnier than just watch. I wonder if they will get the memo someday, but I wouldn't bet on it.

I tried to warn people, I tried

Regardless of how this does, I don't think Hollywood will totally give up on Tomb Raider. We'll see how it does this weekend, international numbers might be strong. A lot of the reviews mention seeing the potential here, even if the movie is a little boring.

This new girl is a far better actress than Jolie. I throughly enjoyed the movie, way more than previous TR films.

Reviews honestly don’t mean jackshit, this movie is far better than any of the previous Tomb Raider movies and is about as good as most of the marvel films.

It's the cuckening of America, I tell you!

Was this post sarcasm? I just saw the movie last night and the new actress was amazing in it. Extremely fit, good acting chops and absolutely gorgeous as well.

She had a much more realistic build for a world class athlete and honestly makes for a far better Tomb Raider than Jolie ever did.

Movie was pretty damn good as well, definitely better than the previous Tomb Raider films. Hope it gets a sequel.

I saw it today. It was enjoyable. I'd give it a 7/10. The actress that played Lara did a good job.

Just came back from the cinema after watching the new Tomb Raider. I thought it was an enjoyable action adventure movie and a better Tomb Raider than the Jolie ones.

Thought Alicia Vikander portrayed the new Lara well. I would say, form your own opinion on this than going by the critic reviews. I hope the poor reviews doesn't affect a sequel potential too much

Good point but she has that body type for a reason based on the scenes in the movie (speed, agility etc.) She's breathing in for a dive in that photo.

Saw it tonight. It was good. Solid movie. Plays it safe but is still enjoyable. I could have done with an extra 20 minutes. Moves a bit too quick.

The movie was not bad. I would say 6/10. And thats a 7/10 for a lot of people. (My scale is just a little bit different).

One hour to get to the island is just too much. 30 minutes would have been a lot better.
I missed the samurai army.
And the part on the island could have been more "die hard" and less the final part of "the last crusade".

The reboot game had great horror elements shame that's kinda lost here

Just saw it and thought it was a good movie. I'd go see a sequel. Thought the adaptation was good, just wish there had been some horror like the game.

Well, at least it's not Dead or Alive.

Wat? DoA was awesome. Came for Tina, got Tina.... 😁. The TR movie was alright but as a person who beat the reboot three times to have the movie be just welming doesn't sit well with me on top of it being a PG13 version of an R rated movie and the gratuitous China pandering couldn't the dude be polyasian or Japanese given the characters in the game and the Location.

I really enjoyed the games, especially the recent rebooted ones - so I'm looking forward to seeing the movie at home when available. I recently re-watched the old AJ tomb raider on Netflix - I really didn't like that much for her unnaturally overemphasized duck lips and also the chest part - heck, when everyone's all bundled up in near arctic temperature - she has the lightest overcoat with her chest wide open... I had to laugh. Of course I like the boobs and all - but it was just over the top ridiculous! LOL...

I was hoping something in the line of female Indiana Jones. Not sure how this rebooted movie is like - but sounds like it's following the first rebooted game.
