Glad it's well-received among the actual RPG enthusiast sites.

I look forward to Waypoint's review of the new Senra Kagura game coming out in October.

I have zero issue about him give the game honest try and he just didn't like it, everyone has their own prefernces. The problem becomes after it when he goes hyperbole about it and call it worst game he ever played and how overrated it is. Seriously you should see his post about Valkyria Chronicles.

don't worry, by the time i play the game you'd probably got it's platinum and forgot about it

I see people are talking about the Waypoint review. The Kotaku review is also pretty painful to read (archived link here so they don't get clicks). For instance, the writer spends too much at the beginning gushing and much of the article is not even about the game itself. Overall, the article is more like a blog post than anything else. Some parts just made me go "What drugs are you on?". This quote, though, takes the cake in the cringe department:

Let me just stop for a second and say I love Sylvando. His intro chapter devotes several hours to his totally queer-eyeing the toxic masculinity right clean out of this cowardly prince of a horse-worshipping desert kingdom.

Why does this series have such a lazy story EVERY SINGLE TIME?

It's such a shame you have to kill Porings with a Gohan you don't even like every time.

In this day and age where almost every single player game tries to be "deep" and mature i appreciate that there are still some games with simple archetypical stories. And in Dragon Quest's case i think (based on the DQ games i've played) it was always more about the characters and the journey than the story itself which for me is perfectly fine.

Agreed, Dragon Quest is the opposite of Final Fantasy storywise and I like them both. FF always has a super convoluted out of this world story. DQ's story is more linear and with less nonsensical plot twists.

Also DQ series might not have complicated story like some other JRPGs but the characters are absolutely charming. DQVIII was like that for me.

I agree with the Waypoint review personally, the series hasn't evolved. Final Fantasy games, for their various flaws, typically experiment and try new things with every iteration. Outside of graphics, Dragon Quest has barely changed in decades. The series is only enjoyable if you want some very glossy nostalgia to old JRPGs with an uninteresting story and basic gameplay.

What a horrible post.

Someone thought the game was difficult and forced you to grind? Rookie.

All of the DQ games are amazing but this was definitely my favorite in respect to first playthroughs. I haven't done s second just yet but I will soon, I think. I'm pretty excited to experience it with VAing this time around since the JP PS4 version was already amazing as is.

So I read the Waypoint review because I needed to get angry apparently and this is, I shit you not, an actual quote from the review:

Which is followed up by this beauty:

We don't deserve Dragon Quest.

If there's a social justice angle to be had, Waypoint will dig through a 100 hour game to find the hour that offended them and talk about it for 50% of their review. They also bitch about the country accents and call it racist. I didn't know France and Italy and Cambodia were races.

Anyway glad to see the hype reviews. 88 is way higher than I thought it'd get for a traditional turn based game, which is awesome. I bought the special edition too :D

Man I know this kind of thing has its audience, like I know that some people might think a character like Sylvando is either good or problematic and they might want to debate it. I'm not against it. But it's weird at least how you can always search for quotes like that in these reviews, they always overthink whatever "tropey" character in any given game and fill up the talk about them in all woke jargon. You'd think that "toxic masculinity" would never be a thing in a Dragon Quest review, and yet here we are. It's safe to assume that if something can lead to a basically unrelated weird overthought tangent about a small detail that is or isn't aligned to how you should think about said issue, well it just will happen.

Must be weird having your brain wired like that.

Wow I did not see this post as I was posting mine, but yeah pretty much. The game isn't about what they want it to be.

Since there's talk about Sylvando, there's a point in the story where I thought the NPCs involved in the storyline were pretty blegh. It was a little unfortunate since I thought they handled Sylvando pretty well throughout the title. Not gonna talk about it unless someone wants to know more in detail but tbh, folks should play the game see for themselves.

Isn't Waypoint run by Vice? That should tell you everything you need to know about them right there.

I never played a DQ game, how does the gameplay compare to FF? (pre FFX, I only cared for FF from 7 to 9).

Typical IGN review, old rpg combat, 8 out of 10. Pokemon still using old rpg combat lets give every Pokemon game a 9 out of 10.

Yeah, I don't understand how can Pokemon gets free pass for this? Also Pokemon games gets released much more frequently than Dragon Quest does.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
All these high scores...

Dragon Quest hype levels at maximum. My pre-order has been in place since they first went up on Amazon.

Looks like IGN is jumping on the SJW train also, goto 3:38

Man the only thing cringe inducing for me is the fact that the reviewer seemingly hasn't played a DQ title before because puff-puff and bunny girls have been around for AGES. I mean Christ, there is a regular output of Dragon Quest themed hentai (praise be) for the past couple decades at least. And not to mention Toriyama's Dragon Ball stuff, hell the old lewd guy is a perfect fit for either series and a great nod. At least most reviewers weren't so busy sniffing their own farts.

Day 1 for sure though, I've been going on a jrpg fast lately and I'm more than ready to deep dive into this baby. Its been a long wait.

He's complaining about a optional side quest also, which you don't even have to do. And complained about puff puff, which also you don't have to do. Its like he went out his way just to find these things and complain about them.

There's nothing wrong with puff puff.

That's the sjw M.O.

Don't enjoy something for what it is, dig as deep as you possibly can to find something that makes you upset and then let everyone know about it.

Gotta get them clicks somehow I guess.

But seriously - I just want to enjoy the latest game in a long running franchise that I've immensely enjoyed over the past 30 years. I don't really need someone telling me why I shouldn't like it, I want to watch a review so I can be informed about what to expect. Everything is so negative these days.

I liked the kotaku review. It's a 30 minute video with one throwaway joke line about toxic masculinity. Don't let it push you away. He's a huge fan and did a great job explaining things the game does new, things it does old, and why all of it is good.

Oh God i just can't stand HappyConsoleGamer. -_- I used to be a subscriber until i realized how shallow his content was. Lots of bragging about how big a fan he is of everything he likes and never criticizes anything negatively.

I haven't played a DQ since it was last on home consoles, I used to really love these games. Going to get this on Steam.

I had never watched a minute of Dragon Ball prior to last year. I didn't even realize that the artist was the same person. Now every time I see that MC all I can see is Android 17. Thinking back to 8 I was controlling Gohan with a doo rag.
