Red Dead Redemption 2: Digital Foundry Analysis (2-parts)

So here’s my question that I’ve been fixated on all day:

Are PS4 Pro owners better off just trying to play at forced 1080p?

If the botched CB reconstruction to 4K causes texture detail loss, blur, and artifacting, would it be better to just force 1080p?

(Hence maybe why I felt it looked better when I turned SS off at 1080p?)

Watch this on a 4K screen preferably, it's not too bad, but I still think Rockstar can improve on PRO's IQ a bit, and make some improvements to perf..... PRO's colors are a tad more saturated btw...

1920x2160 is 4.147200 pixels, Rockstar had other options with same performance budget:

2560x1440 - (3.686400 pixels) they would get better perf and less artifacts on screen

2715x1527 - (4.145805) is the resolution I would use, render it raw (no cb) with good upscaling and 4K hud. This option retains same performance, has correct aspect ratio of pixels and no cb artifacts.

I think base PS4 version is better than Pro version in IQ department thanks to strange decisions of developers.

I would say yes... this comes with the added bonus of the fans not spinning up like crazy, if at all. I can hear the coil whine instead of the turbine for once on my 7116B (and it gets really loud in this game - Spider-Man cutscenes loud when running in 4K), which is great... since the game is really quiet, so a loud console is really annoying.

What I find weird is that I had no frame drops so far... am currently in Valentine, where John apparently had frame drops on his PS4 Pro (I also didn't have any before the train robbery where all of the gang stands on top of that hill, like in the other video that got posted ITT). Maybe it's because I am playing in 1080p, but even testing in 4K, I didn't run into any stutters in those scenes. Looking forward to testing Saint Denis.

And holy damn is that skybox amazing. I have never seen a more convincing thunderstorm in the distance.

Played about 4hrs on my X1X on my 4k HDR TV and this game is just amazing. I thought Wticher 3 and Kingdome come Deliverance were amazing for open world games and RDR2 just blows them away. Really is something that looks next gen in 4K 30 fps.
I'd almost feel sorry for PSPro users stuck with a version smeared in vaseline if Sony fans hadn't been douce bags all gen, so really Sony fans can be comforted to know you are playing a much worse version of the game and missing out on this gen's pinnacle.

I haven’t checked their official forum. I see it mentioned a couple times on reddit but pretty small discussions. I don’t have twitter not sure if anyone has mentioned it on there.

I’ve spent most of my morning obsessing over it. The game has been open on my Pro for probably 6 hours total with me only actually playing the game for a quarter of that time. I’m just gonna let it be.

Hopefully it gets cleaned up but I have to think that if it launched like this after so much development it might might just be what Rockstar feels is the best it can be.

Yep must be a bummer playing this gens best game and worrying about the fact your version looks so much worse. Oh well you picked thr wrong console shit happens.

Agreed about the current IQ parity, and love your suggestion for fixed resolution hopefully moving forward

Once I stopped making tin foil hats and crying into my cereal about how disapppoibted I am in the Pro IQ for this game I ended up just running it on 1080p with SS turned off and the game looks a bit cleaner, Pro is quieter, and I’m not noticing dropped frames either. Most importantly, I’ve actually been able to enjoy the game for the first time over the last couple hours of playtime.

Hell, the game still looks great regardless if you are on base OG Xbox One or rocking the beast mode One X (and the two consoles in between). Really fantastic achievement from a technical perspective as far as this engine’s scalability

Waited a long time for this baby. So happy it’s here. Time to game alllllll weekend!

Not gonna lie tho: if I get this new job that I’m crossing my fingers for then I’m buying an X to celebrate and loading this game first thing.

Good for X owners. If only they had exclusive games to play. Or anything else to brag about. Spider-Man still looks better on the Pro.

fwiw, I'm playing on a Pro, on a 1080p tv. If anyone is in a similar spot and is worried about how it will look, don't. It's gorgeous. No complaints whatsoever. 👍

Ok...

I may be on to something...

Or maybe not so need some help.

Anyone else here have the physical disc version of RDR2 for PS4?

I’ve just done a fresh install of the game but NOT installed the latest 1.02 update. I paused the update download and disconnected the Ethernet cable.

The game WILL launch as version 1.00 from the disc. Now...

Like I said I may be wrong but the game looks sharper and not blurry to me now.

Anyone want to test also and report back? Unfortunately it means deleting and reinstalling the game if you have already updated. It does NOT delete your saves.

Version 1.00 shows the game build as 1099.25

Version 1.02 shows the game build as 1116.8 (if I remember correctly)

I’m playing on PS4 Pro with a HDR 4K TV, video output set to 2160p (4K) and HDR on.

I swear I’m not going mad, the game looks crisp like the trailers and looks like 4K should.

It’s like TLoU 1.8 all over again!

UPDATE: Yep, I’m 99% sure the 1.02 update is breaking or intentionally altering the visuals on PS4 Pro, I need to test further but the difference is night and day between 1.00 and 1.02

Can't you take a screenshot of the same location pre and post update ? That would be the easy way to have a side by side comparison

So now it's Rockstars fault? Gotta pivot that blame away from Sony right? Mother Sony does no wrong

I shouldn’t respond because I’m not down with this “LINE IN THE SAND, PICK A SIDE. OUR ENEMIES MUST BE DESTROYED” nonsense going on in this thread but I feel compelled to point out that FH4 is playable on PC. The guy you are relying to was trying to imply something that gets said a lot in console war discussions.

FH4 is absolutely amazing tho, and definitley worth playing on any Xbox or capable PC

(None of this, nor the two posts this is in continuation of, is/are relevant to the thread)

No sides are being chosen. I have a capable PC (1080 ti), a PS4 Pro, and now a Xbox One X (Just for Red Dead Redemption 2). I enjoy having the choice to play a game at its highest available configuration.

The lighting and small details in the game are simply astounding. And I can't get over how unbelievably clean the IQ is for a game this big.

I honestly don’t think Pro could handle anything higher than 1440p native locked for this game and I would gladly take that over this current botched CB rendering
I'd prefer 1440p native and above if possible on all games rather than CB, it 's only impressed me once and than was God Of War. I do sit close to my 49" tv tho, 2"6-3ft away.

I just deleted and reinstalled the game without the patch just to see if it made any difference. I don't know if it's just my eyes, but I think there might be a minimal change to the picture. The image is a bit darker after patch and maybe a tiny bit lower res, maybe.

I'm sure if D dark10x tried it he'd have the definite answer.

I was kinda with you until you said "make believe PR statements"

Everything he said was true, & fully relates to the thread. Especially in how it correlates to the damage control post he was responding to.

X is the only console you can play RD1 & 2 in 4K & makes a huge indisputable difference. Shoot, even I can tell from the actual *thumbnails* of all these videos being posted by Kent Brockman from the massive super-sampling alone lol.

I still remember the days of 900P vs 1080P against Xbox One during it's first year. What a cluster fuck of fanboy-ism that was over 180P. Ah, how the tides have turned, the denial remains but the difference is oh so staggering this time.

What Rockstar/MS has pulled off with RD2 on the X hardware is absolutely phenomenal. Perfect timing, after the shit storm of negative baiting Xbox threads in the past week.

I only have access to the digital version. Don’t think it’s possible? Also, I first played an older version and it was patched at some point (which is what I used for FPS numbers). I’m curious about this, though. We’ve seen changes between original disc release and patched games before!

I think it’s Placebo, and likely runs worse without that patch, but you want it to be better so it is.

Or you are just running the regular PS4 version, so it actually is better.

Choose your poison.
The darker part isn't placebo. I took screenshots to compare. I don't know if it's because pre patch it's less saturated or something else. I'm not quite sure about the resolution though, if it's there it's either minimal or I can't tell. That's why I said D dark10x would have the definitive answer.

Also, maybe that white smear or whatever it's called is more pronounced after patch. Again I'm not 100%. Someone else who tried this can weigh in.

All in all though, whatever the difference is, it isn't too noticeable. Pretty minimal imo. It's not like I put on the X version all of a sudden.

But yeah, it's something to talk about and compare I guess.

Ah bummer. I wish you could somehow get your hands on a physical version just to test. Would be interesting.

It was me, I was trying to figure it out last night. I can’t put my finger on what has changed, it is not placebo. I think it’s something to do with AA and HDR. Without the patch and HDR disabled the game looks so much cleaner. I also noted the Sharpness slider is introduced in update version 1.02, it is not available in 1.00

That’s a shame, would of been interesting to find out if me and TLZ are going nuts lol

Ive continued to play the game without updating, it seems the game is nicer to look at without it until R* address the issue.

What exactly are you saying here?

XBONEX goes down to 21fps in that scene, but generally it's framerate is pretty solid everywhere else......I know it's youtube, but PRO looks a bit fuzzy here, even over base PS4, (even though the camera is closer on PRO and not exactly 1:1), but there are definitely some inconsistencies between the sharper image on PRO vs base PS4 at times. There's no doubt PRO is pushing more pixels, but the final image at times does not look it..

Also, was this video captured in 4k? I only watched the full videos (once), very early on......Still surprised Rockstar has not said anything yet tbh...

2880 x 1620 = 4,665, 600 pixels......Currently they're are pushing 4,147, 200 pixels, but you also need some overhead for CB to push the pixels higher. In any case, this is not pushing the PRO, you hardly hear the fans running, unlike other games which push PRO....Yes, I know the framerate is not locked on PRO, but perhaps Rockstar can do a bit more optimization there....for both framerate and rez......Get those fans running Rockstar ;)

In any case, if they can fix the CB, that'd be the best thing....If they do 1440p, locked 30fps and it looks sharper than what we see now, that's great....If they also give me 1620p and it's solid or even an option, that's be swell too....I just want them to give an explanation on what's happening on PRO and their decisions there, should be interesting....

Man playing in the Rhodes area really shows the difference between the 2 versions ....the area has quite a bit of haze/mist and swamps but it's a beautiful area....the x is sharp and the colors comes right through the mist and trees....the pro murders it.....gotta be the cbr....its by far the worst implementation I have seen of this...should of just stuck to the lower res imo.

Side note....having both versions is great cause I get to murder everyone on one and be a hero on the other.....being murdering is much more rewarding so far.

Have the game on base PS4 and XboneX , obviously the image difference is noticieable but also the sharp image on XboneX helps to get better headshots on enemies and arch hunting is easier. The blurrier PS4 image helps to make the fur on animals and clothes look a litte better realistic. Since tht besere is not a PC version the XboneX is the best one to play the game if you want to avoid big framedrops.

Love the slow movement /pacing time of the game since I like to take my time hunting or exploring , the game is slow since its like real life works, its not Spiderman or Odyssey.

I don’t have a 1080p monitor handy but I tested it via capture card. I can’t compare against system-wide super-sampling easily since it’s not possible to use it when it detects a 4K capable display. I don’t think it downsamples on its own.

Good joke but Spider-Man has the worst side content I’ve seen in a game. It’s a 7. If you’re going to fanboy a game, make it a masterpiece like God of War. Not a game that forces you to spend hours doing lame circuit puzzles and chasing pigeons and toy cats in windows.

Is there any reason to tinker with the sharpness slider on PS4 or Pro? I haven’t touched it yet

I had to fiddle with some settings last night on both the game and my tv. My normal was just too saturated. Now it’s just amazing. Experiment and see if you like it. Can always jump back to defaults.

Why does it matter if it wasn’t serious in the first place lol.

Am I? It's pretty evident and we even have people here trying to figure out why by reverting to pre-patch. Stating the game looks blurry except on the X is not a stretch by any means.

Because it would be more believable. GOW has a legitimate shot at game of the gen or game of the year. Spider-Man is hollow hype. Sorry, but my disappointment level after that lame boss fight with Rhino turned me off the game. Hopefully Insomniac can improve for the sequel. Suspect they were rushed.
