I wish I was 20 years old again. In reality I'll be soon "celebrating" my 32nd birthday. Still a video game loving, top kek apriciating brat inside, though.

Don't worry you can now identify as younger person. It's what I intend to do in a few years when I reach my mid-life crisis point.

Can I use that to pick up at the club?

“Ewww, leave me alone old man!”

“Nah, I identify as 21. Now, give me your number.”

Current Gaf is more open minded and believes in more freedom of speech. Era believes in curbing freedom of speech.

Swj nonsense is way too much on Era. Very little tolerance for anything.

On the moderation side things are MUCH better. People are actually allowed to have different opinions now and all of the bans I've seen have felt justified.

The gaming side is tad slow but still enjoyable. I do however think that a sub section of users have adopted this weird mentality where they complain about gaming media being too political and they say they wish gaming discussion focused more on the games themselves (gameplay, design, etc)... yet all they seem to want to talk about is the same 3-4 sites being political. If all of them actually made threads about the stuff they claim to care about instead of every other thing Jason Shreier tweets the gaming section would be much nicer.

Offtopic has become pretty enjoyable since it was split from politics.

My friend got banned from Era coz he sided with shikaro in RDR 2 video.

He just said killing NPCs is normal in open world games, why people getting worked up so much. Do they like create controversy on everything. For this he got a month ban.

I’ve been doing this for a while. Once I turned 30 I was 30 until I turned 40. I just turned 40 so I’ll be 40 until I’m 50, and so on and so on. Maybe at 50 I can try to get my DOB changed so I can be 30 for another decade.

Hell I was ID’d for liquor until I was 30 and the legal age here is 18.

As a fairly new member I'm pretty happy with things here, it's clearly well-run, I've had some fantastically educational chats with people on the other side of the political divide, learned a few things and been forced to think about my pre-conceptions and prejudices, which is a pretty fucking useful service to be handing out free. I don't agree with everything I see posted here, and that's a good thing.

i really like it here. it's definitely quieter and slower but i think that's for the best. i admit i did go to ResetEra but they are crazy over there. You aren't allowed to voice your opinion or speak what's on your mind. Unless you wan't banned then you need to play along with their bullshit. i find that a lot of the bans that they give out are because the user was "dismissive of X, Y, or Z" just because they voiced the "wrong" opinion or thought. the mods just make shit up to get rid of people. it's a really disgusting place over there.

neogaf is far much better because i feel like you are allowed to speak your mind without worrying about getting punished. there is of course a line that can't be crossed and i'm in no way supporting things like racism, sexism, or being "dismissive" of anything.

Sounds like the way old Gaf used to be.
If someone made a thread to complain or be outraged about something the only valid response was to share in the outrage and agree that the alluded company or person has to burn in hell. Any comment that disagreed, even if it was presented in a normal and respectful way, was met with a ban.

If someone said "this is racist/sexist/etc" and you disagreed it was an insta ban. Someone once called Black Ops 3 racist because you can't play as a black guy and I just pointed out that I disagreed because the game doesn't have a character creator but rather a predefined character you can just slightly alter (like Geralt in the Witcher) and the thread would imply every game with a pre defined character that isn't black is racist.....and that got me banned

I wouldn't be surprised if someone got banned on Era for using a "," instead of a ";". It's like a very quiet room where anybody can be executed for making the smallest of sounds.
Guide to survive in Era:
- Never express an opinion
- Never express an emotion
- Never agree or disagree with anyone because they are always wrong/right and you get banned for agreeing with the wrong side (there is no right choice over there)
- Never EVER discuss religion or politics
- STAY the hell away from the off-topic forum, its a guaranteed ban-trap!

New Gaf feels like its just been liberated from a Nazi concentration camp. It feels like you can actually have fun now and say stuff without fear of being banned for not following the agenda. Old Gaf really had no freedom of speach, you follow the road or you die.
The only thing i dont like about new Gaf is there is a bit too much console war shite for my liking, and certain posters seem to have free reign to do it. Old Gaf would get rid of them pretty quickly.
Apart from that though, New Gaf is a chilled and fun place to be for me.

This place can finally, genuinely be called NEO-gaf and be proud of it.

I don't even remember, I jumped at the site redesign in 2013 when GS killed like 80% of their active base, the site was broken, barely could load, people lost years worth of stuff, and etc.. Especially the legacy platforms board (which they kind of brought back 2 years later) which they just eradicated.

Excuse me but that looks like a Dot in a dress, and that's perfectly fine, why can't male dots wear dresses? We are supposed to be diverse!

You have been banned for sexual appropriation and a prior history of infractions, even though we might have made up those infractions. :)

Also yes sexual appropriation is a thing there. It's also very vague.

Sorry to break it to you but the etcetera is always hungry for more bans. If there's not enough ban for etcetera folks in their own section they will most likely move to the gaming section and eat someone alive there.

Yeah but if you're a new member at least you can post in the gaming section. You can have a neutral post in a raging off-topic thread and be banned just because. The first goal when you join era is to boost your post count as fast as possible without it being obvious and you need the gaming side to do that, and only for threads about specific systems and games all other thread on either side can doom you even if you don't realize it.

You can post a pic of your favorite female character from X fighting game and get banned overnight for sexual appropriation. Whatever that is.

I think people do/did that here as well though. Looking at people I would consider to be some of the trolls/alts/npcs/political operatives, I have noticed a lot of what appears to be innocuous Nintendo or other generic gaming "fanboy" posting, then a switch to hard line political trolling. That is the modus operandi right?

People did that here, but I wouldn't say they do that here now.

Issue is on era when you get the high post count you have, in some cases, the ability to voice an opinion. Which is a bit ridiculous, you should be able to do that at the start.

Did I say I like this place yet? I do.

The level of activity is fine for me and more would be cool.

It'd be nice if there was a bit more variety in the gaming section. So those people that say they're into niche stuff, please do start some threads and I'll try to contribute if I can, but I do also just like reading about different interests.

Things like Daniel Pacheco Daniel Pacheco 's Steam This Week thread are great too. Curators are the best.

If I visit that site (not a member) the pages freeze every time. You can barely scroll down.

No other site does that.

Sometimes they have some interesting threads though.

Quite often I see like 250+ logged in, the place is picking up steam. Slowly but steady. To be honest I love being and posting on GAF as it feels like a safe haven in the ultra liberal/leftist online gaming world. People are great, discussions without meaningless repeating of one post in houndred ways, all around experience is grate. I know I'm a dick sometimes and my humor can be rough, but try my best not to shitpost everywhere ;)

I think that's what I miss most. I like rough humor. I like Bill Burr level posts without having to feel like "oh shit here we go again with PC police"

I was going to say the same, ad blocker will sort it out. Might also want to look at noscript on Firefox as that will stop any nastiness from running.

But have you been able to express any opinion of your own about any subject there?Like exercising your free speech? Or you just became so good to survive a dictatorship model from that forum? IMO no matter how much neutral you want to stay people will always force you to pick one of the only two sides they believe any subject might have and they want to see if you chose the right one or you just became their enemy so they can curse you at will.

I've expressed my genuine opinions on Era and haven't been banned for it.

I think people are over exaggerating the bans on Era, it's not really relevant to complain about another site when it doesn't affect Gaf anyway.

There is no exaggeration with that, mate.

Given Snoopy's post history - it is clear that he pushes the vast majority of the same inane concepts that are taken as gospel over there. That would explain why he has yet to be banned. Either that or he is friend's with one of the mods and is therefore a protected member.

I haven't posted here in a long time. Currently a member of ResetEra, but it's starting to turn into a place that made me hate NeoGaf more and more before the "event". I never entered political discussions on Neogaf back in the day, and i sure as shit won't enter any on Era either. Just out of curiosity....how IS this place now? Will i be banned for simply having conservative views?

From what I've experienced, you're welcome to post your views as long as you (a) back up your assertions if challenged and (b) don't insult other users or people-groups (i.e. attack the argument not the user).

You can actually see bans yourself at neogaf.com/bans/. It is pretty transparent here now.

Having conservative views in the gaming side won't get you banned. Liking things that aren't politically correct won't get your banned either.

Feel free to be yourself and doubtfully you'll get banned.

I'm sorry, there is a website to track the bans? That seems really... petty. Why would people care so much? Again, it really doesn't affect gaf.

I don't disagree, but that was created by folks over on Kiwifarms. However, I won't turn down easily accessed data located in a convenient location to prove a point.

Are you referring to NeoGaf or ResetEra?

NeoGaf. ResetEra you will be targeted, harassed, and demeaned if not outright banned.

Given when they launched they made a big deal about "transparency", why wouldn't they have an aggregator for who got banned and for what?

That NeoGAF has added a bans page for exactly that reason is a good thing. No more "Wait, wtf? Why has that poster I recognise in this old topic that got bumped been banned?"

You would agree that what happened on GAF last year was an undesirable event, yeah? How do you prevent undesirable events from happening again in future? The answer is you need to understand why it happened, and tracking stats on ban rates and types is part of that.

When they first started it was a new dawn and they promised people would be free to post their opinions. Then came the first wave of 24 hour bans and suddenly people were less free to post their opinions. Then came the week long bans and suddenly even more restrictions were placed on people's freedom to post their opinions. Then month long bans became the norm for differing opinions. Then permanent bans became their go to cure all to keep the people in line.

I have never posted there because it was clear to me I would not be welcome. They would not tolerate my wee Alex Jones rants or Foghorn Leghorn impressions, especially if I used those to highlight the absurdity of topics like the BBC being a right wing mouthpiece or the evil white man stealing our dance moves

At best I expect I'd get away with a couple of one liners before the goon squad turned up. At worst I suspect they'd want me to play the race card and join them.

It's great. I'm more of an IGN guy (can get away with a lot in the comments), but I like talking about games without the constant fanboys sometimes. I applied to resetera and then got banned for disagreeing with the popular opinion. I said I don't like mixing politics with gaming (Witcher tweet fiasco) and got banned for being homophobic after trying to explain my reasonings. You're not allowed to have your own opinion over there. Oh and I'm permanently banned there.

I was banned at Ree for being a misogynist.

As an interesting observation, 23 of the 35 posts in this thread are from accounts created prior to October 2017, with many accounts from the 00s. Which gives validity to the views on the long term evolution of GAF being positive.

Nice. 23/35= 66%.

Thanks for counting. I'm from 2010 myself.
