Sony announces Playstation Classic Console

I pre-ordered this for $99 from Walmart. They are selling it now for $59.99. I started a live chat with them this morning about the price roll back and they issued a $40 refund. Just a heads up for those in similar circumstances.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Even at $60, knowing that it's hackable to load any PS1 game, I'm still having a hard time pulling the trigger on this.

So glad Sony is getting absolutely fucked over this stupid thing.

Playstation has been my primary platform for 4 console generations now. PS5 most likely will be as well.

But they put out a shit product, so they get a shit result.

I would be a little more forgiving if they put the same amount of PS1 love into PS4.

But they don't. No support for PS1 discs. Barely any PS1 games on PS4. I look at what MS is doing with BC, and they are really trying. They aren't looking for MAXIMUM PROFITS, but trying to honor their legacy. But Jimbo Ryan is like "Herp a derp, who wantZZZ TO PALY old GAEMS!!11"

I mean, you could AT LEAST put your first party PS1 games on PS4. You could do atleast THAT much.

But no.

Suck a fat one Sony.

Glad this failed.

Fashionable to hate on Sony again, I see. I got a Snes classic for my son, he loves it. I'll get a Nes mini soon, it's 60 here, so thats good.

It needs confirmation you can use Dualshocks and an easier way to load everything.

Launching it with no analogues is the deal breaker for me. The thing was selling for 60 bucks and I still held off.

So you got a ps1 classic or not... Lol. You just mentioned you got a Snes classic and that's it.

You put out a poor product, you get hate.
For me personally...

1. No dualshocks
2. 50hz games
3. Poor emulation in some games
4. No extra features at all.
5. Front end looks like shit. I get what they were going for, but it looks like a Chinese knockoff.

Went to Walmart Christmas Eve and saw a pile of these Sony classics collecting dust. It could of been something great, but instead Sony got lazy. I wonder if there will be landfills filled with Sony classics? Just like ET on Atari!

Hilarious it keeps dropping. Please get down to $20. I will buy two. One for use and one to keep sealed.

There is an upcoming way to play with your wireless Dualshock (PS3/PS4) and other controllers. It's from 8bitdo and it costs $19.99: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07L334WXC/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Thats cool but then the value proposition kinda goes away. Now I gotta spend an extra 20 bucks, meh. I would like to hack the thing and load it up with N64 and PS1 games, but without the Dual Shock its not worth it.

Would be a no brainer if it came with the Dual Shock, but without it I end up seeing myself not really playing it much.

All though I read retroarch is coming and it will support DS4. So I wonder if you will ever be able to plug in your DS4 directly into the system. I have a PS4 so if I could use my controller I would be all over it.

Sony was just cheap by realeasing it with the original controller. I mean I get the nostalgia, but the DualShock is PLAYSTATION. That controller is so iconic. Just brain dead, but looking at the whole product not a surprise.

I know. It would have been nice if they had actually released it with the original Dualshock's. Just a comical amount of errors on Sony's part regarding nearly everything about this thing. I don't know how you could have so many screw ups on one product. At least the price is tanking at an alarming rate.

DUALSHOCK problem seems to be addressed by 8bitdo.
All games can be changed to ncts 60fps in the menu , using a keyboard.
Agree with your other points, a leaderboard and trophies etc would have been nice.

I didn't get the PS1 mini cause of all the bad reviews ... that's why I went for snes.

I think having 2 Dualshock's in this thing would have made it a much more expensive endeavor. Especially when very, very few games that gen or included in the package utilized it.

Plan was probably then Dualshocks with PS2 Mini, but I don't know if we ever get there.

Whole product felt like one of those AT games thingy's.

The DS thing is a problem being fixed by another company for money. That shouldn't be a solution. At the VERY LEAST, let me use my PS4 controller.
Secondly, 60fps should be the default. Why do I have to find a very specific keyboard to be able to change options? Why isn't that in the options menu from the get go? Why is it hidden?

And right, you went with the SNES classic because of the bad reviews for the PS1. No one is making up bad reviews. It is genuinely a bad product. And Sony absolutely does deserve poor reviews for it. I don't think its cool to hate on Sony. Sony made a shit product and Nintendo made 2 awesome products.

Honestly, remove the 2 crap controllers, and make 1 good one with sticks. That would have been a better use of budget.

Or let people use their own PS controllers or 3rd paty ones.

I mean, for God's sake, its USB.

Does the PS3 controller switch over to "wired" when plugged in via USB (could have sworn it did for PC use), and if so, did anyone try it?

I saw a Youtube video where a guy tried various wired controllers with the Classic. The PS3 controller connected via USB worked once he powered the unit off then on again, and it successfully went into "wired" mode and correctly showed it was "Controller 1" from the lights. The analog sticks worked, but none of the buttons did (no X, O, triangle, square, etc).

So yeah, they really fucked up on this.

It’s always good to see justice served as consumers finally recognize an overpriced and inexplicably lazy piece of shit. It subsequently fails to sell and prices plummet just to get the product out of the store.

Hopefully this is the first and last time that Sony tries to sell a Classic unit. Don’t bother with a Dual Shock Classic or PS2 Classic. Please. Retail purchasers are hoping the same thing.

I would assume that with usb connectivity, someone will figure out how to get usb controllers with analogue sticks working. Just give it time.

If the thing runs Valkyrie Profile well when it's hacked, I'm down for when it gets a bit cheaper. I wouldn't have to pull out my PS1 discs out when I want to play it again, lol.

I hope that Sega are paying attention. Mini consoles aren't just easy money-printing machines, they actually need to be done well in order to be successful.

I don’t think Sega cares.

Well, they pretty much "fired" the company which made the last console (AtGames) and now seem to be developing it in house. They also announced a year delay (it was meant to come out this year - the 30th anniversary of the Megadrive). Although that's no guarantee of quality, it does indicate that they are taking this quite seriously. Hopefully the failure of the PS Classic will serve as a warning.

That said, I already have the Megadrive collection on steam, so am not personally too excited for it anyway.

You can’t just change a PAL game to NTSC and suddenly have this perfect 60fps game... it doesn’t work like that.

The only way you’re going to get the correct 60hrz games is to stick the NTSC iso on there lol.

Let’s face facts here, this thing is an utter shambles, a mess, it had everything going for it to totally smoke the Nintendo classic consoles, but instead I’ve actually spoken to people in my family who don’t even know what platform Mario is on who have told me they heard this thing is to be avoided.

I’ll say that again...

IVE SPOKEN TO PARENTS WHO HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT GAMING WHO KNOW THIS IS A MESS.

This thing can still be salvaged, we just need to wait for a decent front end (with more optimisations, filters and actual options) proper usb controller support on the emulator itself (like maybe a Bluetooth dongle that works with PS4/Xbox one pads), and the ability to easily load games from a usb.

It’s just a bit odd that it’s worse arnplaying PSOne games than my SNES mini... I didn’t see that coming, lol

Oh well hey. Maybe the PS2 Classic will be good.

#SonyToo
got this for xmas and tried it yesterday, cannot believe how bad it runs. like seriously bad, some of the txt on RR4 is nearly unreadable, stuttering in Destruction Derby which isn't there on the actual PS1, this thing is a joke. am hoping hackers actually fix the emulator on this because the state Sony released this in is laughable

I’m surprised Sony finally gets called out for doing shit.

This product has just been released, and it’s already 50% off in GameStop in Denmark. 50 percent off!!!

I’ve seen this exact claim many times, it was especially prevalent when the Playstation Classic was announced (heh) and yet I am yet to see a single reason as to why this would be so.

NES and SNES nostalgia is and has always been off the charts. PSX, not so much. How many gaming forums have thread after thread discussing PSX games? So why would it “totally smoke” the Nintendo classics?

If/when a PS2 Classic is announced, we can revisit this discussion (even then I have my doubts), but really, I feel this claim has very little basis.

No kidding. Even on this board I saw a prediction where someone claimed that PS Mini would outsell both NES and SNES Mini combined, so roughly 10 million units. That was completely outrageous prediction, but even I wouldn't have guessed ho half-assed this was from Sony. Hell, if the hypothetical N64 Mini actually existed, I think even that would outsell PS Mini as it's now.

Reason is simple, in this day and age, Sony can do no wrong and is the lord and saviour. Even when they screw up, it’s not their fault. Having taught many kids over the years, j can’t tell you how many times I’ve had kids (and adults lol) use those same silly excuses. When Nintendo announced the NES mini it was because they had no games today. When Sony did, it was because they were genius.

It’s a god damn PlayStation in a tiny cute form at Christmas. It should have sold eleventy billion units. It flopped. It’s... surprising, if you don’t know WHY it flopped.

I love my SNES mini, utterly adore it. But I seriously thought this thing would sell gangbusters. Instead, it’s almost like they draw on two white boards “what to do” and “what not to do”, and sent the intern the wrong damn one... Crazy...

As much as modern day gamer would like it to be different (and I generally buy everything eventually, so, no fanboy), Nintendo nostalgia will always trump any other gaming nostalgia in terms of numbers. Just look at emulation. Nintendo consoles are always the most actively supported in that field.

Of course, this may change one day. But, it is what it is.

Nintendo cop a lot of shit nowadays, but that thirst is real.

The Switch is amazing though, and Nintendo have done such a good job with it. It’s just their menu and online that’s let it down, almost like it was made by the playstation classic team lol. What makes me scratch my head about Nintendo is they have the most amazing legacy of games, and finally a way to play them good, but... they have messed up the virtual console. Is it SO HARD to give me access to the games I’ve already bought three times, while giving me an online that I can message with? It’s crazy, it’s basic... but that’s Nintendo. They make amazing products that let you down in the most strange ways. They will never change.

The PS classic though... Christ... just who knows... Sony make huge mistakes often as well, and get less flack for it because they have more fans. But when I have die hard fanboys who are 8, and people who haven’t even held a controller before, both talk to me about how this thing is awful, you know you done goofed. (Seriously one girl I know in the family bought it for her husband, then took it back. Didn’t tell him. She knew he loved PlayStation, but had no end of bad press about it).

I mean... this things a mess... but it could still be great, just no thanks to Sony. Talking to my friend he seems to think the best little emulation device at the moment outside of a raspberry pi, is the 4k firestick. So next time one of those goes of offer I’ll buy one. Already own a few of the normal ones, but I’m willing to test this one for a laugh :)

Yeah... no

It's easy to claim that, but whenever Sony has tried to follow Nintendo's steps and outwit them, it has failed miserably. Their best attemp was the PSP, and that was smoked by the DS.

This had the potential to work reasonabily good, but nowhere near of smoking Nintendo's classic consoles.

Had they included everything that made PSX a classic....it's reasonable to say it would have given the Nintendo options a run for their money.
