Combat in Devil May Cry 5 feels very outdated

I tried out the demo today on PS4 and it bored the hell out of me.
Not only did the combat feel uneventful, the camera needs a lot of work.

Also, I'm somewhat disappointed that PC didn't get a demo as well.

Outdated compared to what? I haven't played the demo, so I have no opinion, but "outdated" is about the emptiest complaint someone can level against a game, right up there with "uninspired" and "problematic".

outdated for 2019.
the camera angles and the combos etc feel like something that we experienced 2 gaming gens ago with near no meaningful combat innovation.

then the constant confinement to hallways or square rooms not to mention the overuse of "kill enemies, run to next area, watch cutscene of monsters appearing, kill them, rinse and repeat".
Its one of the biggest issues I had to Ryse as well. Very outdated.

LOL, man.

Just like I said on the Xbox Demo thread: a demo for DMCV is a bad idea. People really don't get that DMC games are like fighting games: you need to spend some real time with them - enough to be at least competent - before the games really "click". Outside the graphics, DMC games do not serve instant gratification seekers (outside 2, of course) and a demo is going to hurt the game's interests.

I doubt you played through the demo more than once, and even if you did; I doubt it was enough times to come to any solid conclusions about the gameplay based on this demo alone.

*edit*

If your problem is entirely with the structure of the presentation: DMC isn't for you. That aspect of the game might be reasonably called "outdated' but I think that's a super-shallow reason to dismiss the game entirely based on everything else presented. The experience at large couldn't possibly be further from something like Ryse.

It hasn't evolved in any meaningful way to continue to hold my interest in 2019.
feels like an old game with a fresh coat of paint on it and though some may love that formula, God of War has shown that taking chances and evolving your series can be extremely rewarding.

Have you ever played a DMC game before?

See this kind of statement right here is how you know someone is bad at DMC.

To be honest, I'm not fantastic at the game, but Dante does feel more...weighty and his attack feel slower. I don't know if that just intended for the beginning of the game or not but his combos are slower than what I remember from DMC4 and DMC the reboot.

What does that mean exactly? has there been hack & slash in 2019 that give us “standard” how hack & slash should be?

We've had more interesting combat from games like Bloodborne and I'm near 100% certain that Sekiro would be miles better in terms of gameplay.
But DMC5 feels very outdated to me.

So you want more souls like combat in DMC? I feel like this less about combat being “dated” and more about you just don’t like combat in DMC series.

I don't want to play a PS2/PS3 version of Devil May Cry with a fresh coat of paint.
I have a gaming PC and can already replay those games any time I want to.

Also, if you think me mentioning games that have evolved their gameplay means I want DMC5 to play like them is probably a sign that I'm having a discussion that will go nowhere.

I dont want DMC to innovate, i just want a good crazy hack & slash, and i havent got one ever since bayonetta 2 on the wii u, and before that it was the first and DMC4. The combat is good how it is, you unlock more moves and you advance, you have 3 playable characters. God of war had to change because it was always very shallow compared to DMC/ninja gaiden/bayonetta

Both DMC3 and 4 still has best combat in hack & slash to this day. You bet your ass most fans want DMCV ‘s combat have same elements as those two games.

Its like hearing an artist you've listed to in the 90s come out with something in 2019, trying to be current, but cannot help but sound exactly the same as decades ago.
You know those artists. Their music eventually becomes niche.

This genre was always niche anyways, and like someone else said before, DMC3/4 still have the deepest combat system of the genre. No reason to change what isn't broken, even more when we barely have games of the same type.

Yup, you're spot on. Most artists embarrass themselves because they can't stand the idea of not being relevant in changing climates instead of settling on the idea that they can update themselves to a degree that won't compromise their brand, alienate their older fanbase, salvage their dignity, and still make a living.

If you're not willing to allow an artist to be true to its strengths and present an older message that many still consider relevant today - your best bet is to tune out and ignore it. DMCV is not for you.

No, some artist can truly evolve and make relevant contributions to their craft.
Look at God of War 2018.

Many musical artist can evolve and be relevant for their time.

But when you become stuck in the same ole same ole, then the only fans you're going to have are niche ones.

Yeah. The game isn't pick up and be great. It's a game you have to work at to master. Playing the game just to finish it and doing the basic combos isn't what's good about dmc.

You ever hear the phrase “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”?

You asked the same question twice. Guy already explained why so idk.

I agree. Just wait for Bayo 3.

VERY few can. An insignificant amount.

Most can't.

GoW was a very unique circumstance. It was a series that many, including its creators, thought was becoming severely long in the tooth. Not only that, but it was criticized as a shallower rip of - you guessed it! DEVIL MAY CRY! Even the original creator admits this.

GoW 2018 was an attempt to not only revitalize what most considered a stagnant series - but to craft its own long awaited identity out of the effort.

This is not analogous to the DMC series at all. A series that has been dormant for 11 years now, was always considered not only the progenitor, but the standard for the genre even until this day, and people were honestly starting to think we would never get another game in the series again.

This is definitely not a situation that warrants "revitalization" in the same sense.

I agree. Just wait for Bayo 3.

I asked him the second time because he ignored me the first time, and he still hasn’t actually answered.

And I know that second part isn’t in response to me, but Bayonetta 3’s gameplay isn’t gonna be drastically different and “innovative” compared to 2. Just like 2’s wasn’t drastically different from 1’s.

Again, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Bayonetta 3 won't feel like an outdated Bayonetta 1.

Is your stance really “games should never have gameplay like their predecessors”? Really?

Bayonetta 3 is gonna have the same core as the other two, and you’re gonna have to cope with that.

Next episode on NeoGAF, user talk how lame is Sonic to use just one button. "Felt too much in the early 90's, and even then we have more than one button to use". Stay tunned.

Yeah, I'm sure that's the narrative you'll repeat to yourself while you smile through your teeth trying to convince yourself and others that you enjoy the game because it's so substantially different from its predecessors in relation to DMCV.

@OP

You're playing only 1 of the 3 main characters, and you only have access to a very, very limited selection of his moves and combos at that. The demo is also clearly on some kind of easy punching bag mode where nothing really fights back, it's against the most generic of enemies that die instantly, and we only have a few barebones city street hallways to run down.

Even the most seasoned of DMC vets that do crazy ass combo videos of the previous games on YouTube don't know how the game's combat system actually feels right now, because we simply don't have access to the vast majority of it.

Give it some time for the full game to be explored.

Besides missing a better dodge mechanic I liked it and it didn't feel dated to me. It might not deviate a lot from the older games but it's still better than the less responsive "light RPG mechanics and fighting bullet sponges" combat systems that have become popular in the modern action genre.

And as others have pointed out. The moveset in the demo is limited compared to the whole game and the demo seems to be using a very low difficulty setting with enemies that basically just stand there

Those are completely different games with different aims and gameplay - outside of Bayonetta 2 which is arguably the closest to DMC - but it still has its own quirks that help vastly differentiate itself from its older brother.

Honestly, your complaints read more as "I do not understand the intricacies of the game and therefore it feels bad." This is a valid opinion to have, but one that is in no way "outdated". That is an issue with you and not the game.
