Anthem reviews are starting to drop [literally]

I know a lot of people are tired of AngryJoe but I think his review is pretty spot on. He gave it a 4, i would give it a 6.5 or 7, but his gripes are pretty aligned with mine.

They need to adjust the economy and reward/cost ratios

Also need to make loot more exciting, in general

Just watched Joe's review, and it was really on point from my perspective. The lack of variety in weapons, missions, cosmetics, environments, etc., the annoying fan-fic, Whedon'esque dialogue, the boring antagonist, the loading screens, the bad/confusing UI, janky animations, terrible enemy AI...ugh. I was huuuugely disappointed in Andromeda, but this is somehow even worse.

I'm enjoying what I've played so far (A few hours in), taking it slow and trying to pay attention to the story being told through characters and cortexs.

Honestly for me this as is is a 7/10 game for me.

Are load times annoying? Of course, but many games have loading. Maybe it just doesn't bother me cause I've worked very hard this year to not get so worked up over video games and just get back to playing and enjoying them for what they are.

My issue isn’t the load time itself, like I’ve never sat on a loading screen longer than 30 seconds so far, but there’s just so many. Having to load in and out of the forge everytime I want to make a change is kind of lame

The thing is, this isn't some indie f2p work in progress deal. It's a major release from a well respected developer, and at full price. I think there is a slight bit of score dumping and piling on going on, but it's just not a very polished release.

I actually like the gameplay and Bastion as a playground, but between the damned near game breaking bugs, general performance issues and lack of good structure and content, I think it sits right where it should in terms of score. I think this may end up being an almost great game, if EA allows Bioware to keep working on it. But right now it just isn't a finished product.

That said, any serious critic who gives it 5 or below really is taking the piss.

There's an amazing game in there somewhere, no doubt about it. Visually it's amazing and the fights are great.

Its just so bare bones right now it's borderline criminal.

The short 20 yard leashing in missions starts to wear thin. There are several small changes they should make this week that would pull it toward the place a game like this should live.

Saw Joes review, but he hated Alita so the guy has zero cred to me lol. Not saying he’s wrong. Sounds like a very detailed and well thought out assessment. Just wondering if his thoughts are a little hyperbolic. On a side, my brother in law absolutely loves the game. That tells me the game might just be very polarizing.

How about we gather all this bad feedback and submit it to them so they KNOW exactly how to fix this game.

I am loving the game but confused beyond belief with where to go and this small ass town to walk thru for lore. Me and my friends all play together and yet the same mission doesn’t register as completed for all of us when we all had that very same mission to do!

I’m lost on the stronghold, I did it like 4 times and it’s still showing up as if I never completed it. Hard difficulty is nuts and without a good squad and mics it’s almost pointless at times.

You can’t really search for extras when you try and solo as the match making pairs you up with speed runners that don’t bother looking for side stuff and making the wuest worth it time wise.

But I will say the length of stronghold missions should be reflect in the campaigns missions as those are done and over way too quickly.

Delusional with what? lol

Destiny at launch was a way better game Han Anthem... it is not even comparable.

What you see is all the big companies trying to create it own “Destiny” without touch a finger of what Bungie did.

Bungie failed Destiny 20 times to get it right once.

It was an incredibly bad launch, what're you on about? I'd rather play Anthem than Destiny.

I haven't seen that movie but are you saying it's not a complete dud? I thought it was another ghost in the shell so I haven't been looking into it

I agree with everything Joe said. And I'm still playing Anthem. And having fun when the game works.

I personally think it's the best Anime adaptation ever. Battle Angel is near and dear to me so it says a lot. I would highly recommend it.

That's good to know, so his gripes are justified it seems but a little overly dramatic. He's bothered by them but others may find it completely tolerable. Again, he was pretty much the same with his review of Alita and I get what he's saying but those things that bothered him did not bother me at all. I might pick up anthem depending on it's longevity. It doesn't look good though because the Division 2 is right on it's heals :(

Well now people can appreciate a bit how good Bungie did with Destiny :D

They are still the only successful case of this type o game... and they did that in 2014.

Started with Destiny 1 shortly after launch, and continued playing this series with almost no rest ( delaying Black Armory buy was one of the few) for more than 5 years straight, every game session is Fun like the first, if not more, definitely Among my top 5 series ever
Anthem since the beginning smelled like a bad clone DESTINed ( pun intended ) to fail, and...here's your winner

Sorry Bioware, you deserved better, maybe via dlc

I feel bad for folks that spent $60 on this, it barely has enough content to justify the $15 origin pass.

Yeah, again, Joe’s gripes are very valid and fair, he just slammed the score too low IMO

No way it’s a 4

I could see 6

Seems like most GAFers enjoy it

Destiny at least functioned well and had fantastic gun play.. But your point of comparison between Anthen and Destiny is a moot point as we have Destiny 2 now and the support and development with that has been amazing. The game is light years ahead of where Anthem is. It has hundreds of hours of content, interesting loot, seamless connectivity, fantastic gameplay and a devoted community.

Time will tell whether Anthem gets the support it needs content wise but with EAs track record it’s not looking good.

Joe's review is brutal, but fair. Anthem would be a 6 or a 7 if it didn't have a massive budget, a ton of talent and a 6 goddamn years of development behind it.

This is why i dont follow gaming website anymore

Angry Joe is spot on with the score

A dud? Are you out of your mind? The movie is phenomenal. One of the best movies I saw in years.

*shrug* I thought it was fun. Has some anime-ish logic issues and tonal swings (for obvious reasons), but even as a complete non-fan going in, it was a solid flick.

ACG being absolutely savage on Bioware. All their bullshit of it being an open seamless world, sitting on panels stating how good they are at writing etc.

Edit: Also whoever the retard at Bioware decided to tether people to random players should never be let close to designing a game again . Who thinks that its fine that players can lose loot in a looter shooter because some rando in you squad decides to fly away and pull everyone else into loading screens?!?

Nah, that's what you get for pre ordering games. Specially when it's from big publishers.
They could have waited until launch, seen the reviews and guessed that it's probably going to be selling for like $30 in 3 weeks.

Definitely. I have zero sympathy for those who preordered.

2 time “Worst Company in America” champions EA have a long history of buying great developers and running them into the ground. And of releasing games in an incomplete/buggy state and loaded with microtransactions. And they already ruined BioWare’s most popular series.

I don’t how many more red flags you need. Preordering is stupid anyway, but in this case it was just begging to be let down.

Frostbite is a great engine for screenshots and a bad engine for gameplay. It doesn't help that EA forces their developers to show a ridiculous level of detail during E3 that has to be scaled back significantly for release.

All I've read about this game has sparked my interest in Destiny 2 instead. I hope we will still get Dragon Age and this isn't the beginning of goodbyes. We got these here:

Looks like a hard to use engine. DICE nails it, yet other developers can't handle it. Battlefield V looks awesome and runs @60 fps on consoles. Anthem looks great, yet can't handle even 30 fps.

I don't know if DICE nails it because every game this gen from DICE is full of bugs.

There is critical bugs on Battlefield 4 not fixed even today.

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
I have only played 3 or so hours, and I haven’t seen much, but I am enjoying the flying and the feeling of power of the hulky armor I chose. Even with the terrible performance at times, the special effects and amount of enemies on screen at a time make up for fun fights so far. Obviously, these are super early impressions.

My point still stands though, scores dont mean a thing. Its the community that matters. Youtubers make only a small portion of the community.

I'll wait for a month or two before I pass judgement on Anthem. Personally I feel its alright now, an average looter shooter, but I would like to see how this game evolves with time. I feel it has potential.

This is objectively false. Scores aren't the only thing that matters, but they are a "thing". You can just toss out a 60 Metacritic fart and expect it to be as good as Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

WHOA!!WHOA!! WHOA!! WHOA!! I was going to skip this movie. But if it's this good........should I see it on a huge XD or IMAX screen?

Yeah, scores matter without question. Maybe not to everyone of course, but the scores for this one have kept me from jumping in at least. Mass Effect 1-3 (yes, including 3) were my favorite games of last gen. Was looking forward to this a bit. But I am PS4 only and missed the free trial weekend, so scores were only hope for me to jump in at full retail price. These scores don't cut it. It's possible I grab it someday on sale if I see good word of mouth by then, but for now its a pass.

It's only my opinion, and it's not going to win any acting awards but yeah. The critiques are wrong about this one. See this in the biggest format you can. The some of the scenes are jaw dropping.

It doesn't and it's super annoying. I mean, you can see each individual items stats, but it does not anywhere show you in one place what all of your stats are.

Well, I'm enjoying it... But that's cause of Origin Premier. I really like the environments and the combos/powers/customisation. The Shooting isn't exactly terrible, but I find myself comboing off powers more than shooting for sure.

I only have 8 hours however, but I had a really fun 8 hours and hope I get quite a few more. For the £15 I spent on premier, I feel like I'm getting my moneys worth.

Okay fuck this game. The 5 freeplay tomb things which are just 25 or so challenges to have a loading screen into the tomb to PICK SOMETHING UP is disrespectful to players. That's my £15 done.

It's GaaS so I have come to expect limited content with more to follow. That's fine.

Destiny was like this until Taken King and I hear SoT is much better these days, and that had zero content at launch!

The loading screens are horrible. It's a valid criticism imo.

My big worry is EA. Will they continue to give it the support it needs over 3-5 years if it hasn't sold well?

Did you played Destiny at launch? And Anthem? Destiny was never like that.

Content is probably the minor issue of Anthem.

Comparisons between Anthem & Destiny should probably end at "game as a service in a science-fiction setting". Destiny was a first person shooter with arguably the best shootbang mechanisms on console at the time of its release. It also had player versus player. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see "how" that would be popular, even with a lack of content & repetitive mission structure (+ the unintentionally hilarious story with Dinklebot & wizards from the moon etc.). Anthem is different.

Even in a best case scenario (i.e. if Anthem was a great game) it just wouldn't attract the same sort of skill-based fps fanatics who latched onto Destiny at launch. The cult of the fps genre among a very large percentage of console & pc owners is real.
