The simple answer probably lies somewhere between 22 years ago and technical limitations.
Yeah. Wrong, of course. Here, I'll cross out a few answers out for you: it's not for tactical depth, because FFVII didn't have any of that, as has been pointed out repeatedly over the years.
It's not technical limitations, either. Turn-based combat survived the generational leap even within the series, and besides that there are plenty of action-RPG success stories from that era.
It's not design inertia; SquareSoft redesigned their battle system for every entry in the series going back to the 8-bit entries. Turn-based combat was practically the only thing they kept from one game to the next.
It certainly isn't speed, because I can fight three battles in FFVII before you can finish one in FFXV. Even with all the streamlining and thinning mechanics over the years, the tendency of FF battles has been to get
slower, not faster.
I'll even throw in a bonus hint: what's the one thing you
cannot do in a real-time game?
You can discuss whatever you want, whenever you want.
Doesn't mean there won't be people telling you to get over it.
Oh, but... you weren't telling me to get over it, remember? You were ready to have the argument, until you switched gears and decided you had some other kind of point to make. Can you kindly not pull this shit in a thread that's like 5 pages long? I remember the post, and the one you quoted.
Eight sentences to tell me to get over it? Very suspicious. One could even get the impression that maybe you
had to re-arrange the terms a little bit, because otherwise it kind of looks like
you were the one bitching idly without any real point to make.
