I don't dislike the dynamax gimmick. It's okay. I'm not thrilled about it either, honestly I would prefer more mega-evolutions but I guess they can't not bring something new each generation.
The battle UI is going for a flat style, not too awful I suppose. The Rotomdex can go fuck itself.
The region looks awesome and the mix of larger areas and roaming Pokémon is a step in the right direction. I'd like to see more of the cities though!
The Legendaries are really cool. Not as much as Solgaleo/Lunala but still. Shield wolf is amazing, I love how the shield can protect its sides and form a giant front wall when needed. Sword wolf is badass too though the design is a little all over the place. It must be tiring to hold that sword all the time during combat. I wonder if it levitates around him when he doesn't fight. I also wonder about the types, Steel seems pretty obvious for both of them but what other types can they have? I hope it's not Fighting.
Black steel raven is clearly the best Pokémon of the batch, a flawless design really. The others aren't bad, can't wait to see the evolutions of the sheep and Dreadnaw (great name).
On the human side, it's cool to have a new female professor and Sonia is truly beautiful. New champion is ok but ffs why does he have to have a Charizard. There's so many starters to pick from. I hope the rival is actually a real rival and that he gets some characterization.
Milo's anatonmy is inhuman. Seriously. what the fuck. Feet too small, legs too short. I know they're going for a buff look but he looks so wrong.

With Shield Face if he/she has the move Skull Bash...would it not be Shield Bash instead? DEF is going to be high from the front at the very least.
Any surprise attack from behind such as Astonish should make them faint instantly.

We don't know who designed the legendaries, it could be new guys. In any case, it's not like a new guy would necessarily come up with good designs. Fans underestimate how challenging it can be to come up with new designs, especially since that so many Pokémon already exist.
And whoever is responsible for the designs of the mascots, Game Freak made it very clear that they have no problem going with busy designs since at least Dialga and Palkia. It's been more than ten years so you'd think fans would have accepted that legendaries could be more or less reminiscent of Digimon. But no the dead horse still needs some beating.

Pokemon fanbase are in the same level as Sonic fanbase. They're not very picky and are easily pleased.
You see, some designs are good no doub, others mix bad and others terrible or repetitive. I actually quite like those wolf legendary design, but lets be honest... a sheep pkmn again? a tortoise pkmn? a dandelion pkmn? Only repetitive design. You can even search for fake pkmns artist on twitter/google with create even better design than those.
The truth is they do not need much effort to sell.

I mean...Megas are a concept first created by Digimon. Also, Digimon is the one with the idea of a temporary evolution(digivolution), not to mention the digivices which are kinda like what triggers the Mega stones.

To me it looks more like fans are always displeased, every time a new game is made you're going to hear "omg so ugly".
I agree that the Pokémon games can sell very well despite designs not pushing the limits of creativity. The Dandelion is the least creative of the bunch and definitely feels very repetitive in regards to Flabébé, Jumpluff, etc.
However I think that there can be great designs with animals we've seen before. The Greninja line comes to mind. The raven is also a clear example of that, he looks nothing like Honchkrow and is apparently well received. I'm willing to give the sheep a pass because there aren't many sheep Pokémon but yeah, there isn't much though in its look (then again, the same can be said of some old Pokémon). For the tortoise, I'm waiting to see the evolution but I'm not a huge fan of it for now. Overall the designs can be hit or miss.
It looks like the designers are playing it safe for the most part, I'd love to see them try Pokémon based on a capybara, a dolphin, a wombat, etc. But to be fair they always include some mons based on new animals in each gen. Guess we'll have to wait for the full Dex!

Gen I of Pokemon had only 3 designers on it.
Not sure how many Gen VII had but I know it may be at least 8 or more. The design process of Pokemon has to go through an approval first before they can be added.

Great video for an explanation on why the Pokémon designs are so different from previous gens. One thing I will say that’s in the video that I agree with 100%. The newer gen Pokémon are designed like products on a shelf and not animals anymore. Such a shame. That gen 1 and 2 art is absolutely amazing.

Vastly disagree. Plenty are designed like animals, just like in Gen 1 and 2 there were plenty that looked nothing like animals. Geodude is a fuckin' rock with arms ffs.

Drednaw has elements from a tortoise, but his head is more reminiscent of a prehistoric armored fish like Dunkleosteus. Gen 1 might be my favorite gen, but this is plenty more creative than something like Horsea, Seel or Voltorb.

I second this. You could even play Black 2/White 2 afterwards, it feels like a different adventure if you abstain from visiting the post-league content in BW1. Plus the difference in regional Dexes means you can build a totally different team and fight vastly different teams from BW1.

I would argue having the same origin animals is okay due to it's ecosystem and new region features. I mean if you really count 'repetitive design' we already had tons of it, but at least not on the same entry.
As for fake pokemon artist, please it's not that simple kind of situation. It's even the same thing with official ones, out of millions of garbage fake pokemon designs, only handful of them are truly great and acceptable on mainstream. Even then some of them are too complicated and tone-deaf. It's truly a subjective topic.
Also, I would believe the official artist are truly working hard on creating their designs, their effort is not to be dismissed that easily.

I probably should’ve phrased my post a little differently but god damn those designs are simple, great and get the point across. I kinda feel their elements are perfect whereas the newer ones have too much going on in terms of design where they come off more like a toy instead of a creature you might find in the wild in the Pokémon universe. I truly don’t think it’s a nostalgia thing with liking the gen 1-3 designs over the newer stuff. The art (especially in gen 1) is absolutely breath taking and you can see the passion put into it and see it clearly meant something to that artist. I do like a bunch of the newer mons but imo nothing beats the older gens. Nidoking being my favoriteWe'd like a word
