The gears part where run for the shotgun was great. Cool to hear about his thoughts on streaming and PSO. Phil does have more knowledge than most and you can tell he likes gaming. Thanks for sharing OP.
Your so wrong.>umm yeah im a gamer
>we are trying to do good with xbox
>i talked to sega about pso
basically nothing happened.
No at all brother. No homo, but I'm a pretty sweet guy.Why so bitter?
Phil Spencer's image has been quickly manufactured by very smart PR people ever since 2013 in order to save the xbox division.I think they overdone it though and he's hardly convincing anymore for people other than MS fanboys who keep hyping up every fart he makes.

Aye, ok.Every company is about making money, and it’s not about likeable OR people at all, it’s their company philosophy.
MS was about pushing whatever they wanted down people’s throats. That has changed since Ballmer’s been kicked out. Now it’s about asking what the consumer wants and giving him what he wants, and if you do That they will come to you. It’s a different strategy and it’s working very well for them, just look at their profits and trillion dollar market cap. By asking and giving, consumers are coming back en masse to MS and they are reaping the profits company wide right now.
People want to use office everywhere, MS delivers. People want SQL on Linux, MS delivers. People want Xbox games on PC, MS gives it to them. They don’t want to use the windows store, they put those games on steam. People have been asking for crossplay forever, they deliver yet again! They dropped windows phone as people didn’t want it and put all of their services where people wanted to be, on iOS and Android. BC is another one that’s a huge plus for consumers, and Scarlet having 4 gens worth. is a statement to that.
Ask Sony or Nintendo to release their games on PC where lots of people would like to play them and see what do. You could argue MS owns Windows 10, however having Sony games on Steam doesn’t give a 30% share to MS, so it doesn’t really matter much. MS could have tried to keep their games to Xbox but they decided to do what gamers were asking and let them choose.
If Sony and Nintendo were more for the consumer they’d give them choice. As it is, they’re forcing you to spend extra money on locked hardware ecosystems when they shouldn’t have to.
So while it is PR, they are still humble in the sense that their design philosophy is a company wide thing being pushed by the CEO down to all MS divisions and they all abide by it and push that vision, and that is what you are hearing in those interviews. It’s transparent and you can’t say they are lying, you are seeing it in all things MS right now so they do apply what they say.
This is exactly what it is.....Prior to XBOX-ONE, Mattrick was the best thing to happen to XBOX by MS fans...….The 2013 DRM fiasco was just too glaring, MS got roasted and toasted......In that case, it was too big of a sin, someone had to take a fall...And so, why not the captain of the XBOX ship? Good ol Don Mattrick.....Hell, he may not even be the one who had the idea for the 2013 DRM, it could very well be the guy under him, who convinced him 'Hey, I've done my research, this is how we take over the living room Don"....Huh! I don't know Phil, you're sure about that approach? I'm a games games man myself.....Hey! Don't worry Don, I got this, we lock the ecosystem, you must be online to play, pray, share...…..We locked them up pretty tight with LIVE last gen, and those coons still swore on LIVE......Hell, that momentum we had with 360....pffft!..... we will take it to the next level man...…..Sony has no chance with their shitty PSN, and come on Don, we are also NOT going to concede 40% power to these guys on hardware specs........So cool your hats, It's a lock baybeh! I got this ok......Hmmpphh! OK Phil do your thing......You sound passionate about it, let's see where it goes......Phil Spencer's image has been quickly manufactured by very smart PR people ever since 2013 in order to save the xbox division.I think they overdone it though and he's hardly convincing anymore for people other than MS fanboys who keep hyping up every fart he makes.
Yep, usually when someone makes a bunch of promises that don’t come true I think of them more as a liar than a savior, but it’s been a hard half a decade on Xbox fans. Was this thread about Phil or about sucking off Microsoft while disparaging the competitors in the same breath?
Goodness, I don't mind people expressing love for their brand, but the obsession with Savior Phil is unhealthy.
Usually you cheer for a hero after they've saved the day, not after they've spent all generation talking about saving the day.
Surely you're joking, anyone could see from a mile away that Mattrick didn't give two fucks about gaming. I have been on gaf since 2005 and I don't EVER recall any significant push for Mattrick being anything but bad for gaming.Mattrick was the best thing to happen to XBOX by MS fans...

The rest is history,,,,,,
I would take Donny over Uncle Satya, who is really running the show and has been really for about decade behind the scenes. Little Phil is just happy sitting at the adult table, but you can see it in his eyes how he thinks this will turn out...I actually thought it was a good interview.Surely you're joking, anyone could see from a mile away that Mattrick didn't give two fucks about gaming. I have been on gaf since 2005 and I don't EVER recall any significant push for Mattrick being anything but bad for gaming.
That's probably why you're not the ceo of a companyI would take Donny over Uncle Satya,
Oh you got that right, literally these subscriptions are the devil. Businesses are rapidly figuring it out.... it's not cheaper, it's a horrible road to go down as a customer, generally speaking. That's probably why you're not the ceo of a company
Thats your job as a consumer to decide if you want to support subs. Clearly all of the software (not just game companies) are pursuing SaaS so you'll be bucking the trend.subscriptions are the devil.

Personally I think game pass is the best way to segue to the cloud platform. I get all the benefits of running the software locally with no latency or significant download costs while getting access to a significant library.
Publishers get a steady source of income on software that previously was VERY frontloaded
I imagine it’s going to be very similar to the last gen transition where if you bought the previous gen game you get the next gen one for free (COD ghosts) or you pay a small amount to upgrade if they do a next gen version and you own it digitally (Minecraft).Just watched the interview and his answer to the last question worries me. I dont want to have to rebuy some games to get scarlet enhancments.
Will have to hold out on third party releases until more info is released

It was clear that after Balmer helped Peter Moore out the door that the Xbox division stagnated. There are endless quotes from mattrick that suggest the didn't give one fuck about gaming beyond the bottom line. Did we ever even see him give an interesting off-the-cuff interview like this giantbomb one with Spencer? You're right about that. I don't ever remember anyone ever saying anything good about Mattrick aka "the father of Kinect" even when the Xbox platform was doing well.

Even comparing mattrick and Spencer in the same sentence is simply idiocy
Developers developers developersBallmer is gross, and you need to change your avatar.
Fascinating.Developers developers developers
Nah, Balmer is a reminder what happens when you have a shithead who doesn't know squat about development try and run a software company. It's what I'm suffering thru right now IRL
People like Phil Spencer,Larry Hryb,Jack Tretton,Shawn Layden,Yoshida, and previously Reggie from Nintendo America (and many more from big 3rd party publishers) they all remind me of your typical American salesmen from the 1960's
[..]
Considering how many games Spencer plays I would think he has more credit than your typical gaming suit. Comparing Spencer to someone like FilsAme is laughable to me.Very few executives seem genuine to me
Phil once said to me:
"It's not who you are underneath, but what you do that defines you".
Phil plays a lot? How do you know, is his gamertag public, does the intern at MS play games on his account?Considering how many games Spencer plays I would think he has more credit than your typical gaming suit. Comparing Spencer to someone like FilsAme is laughable to me.
He' s not good at it really, the only people I see convinced of Phil's authenticity are Xbox fans by and large......I just watched the interview, and I really cannot see what some of you guys are seeing. It seems to me that your biases cloud your judgement, which is very unfortunate. I do not see a man pretending...or a pretentious man. I do not see fake smiles. I do not see "a ton of PR speak". All I see is a simple man who's passionate about games and gaming and is unafraid to talk about his own and the company he works for shortcomings.
Some say Spencer is not a real gamer, and I'll ask them, how do you know? There was an interview many moons ago with all the past Xbox heads from each generation (excluding Don Mattrick) hosted by Ryan Mcaffrey from IGN. In that discussion Phil spoke about a few things in his personal life and one of those things was gaming - he mentions a distinct memory he has with his son (or daughter perhaps) that is burnt into his mind and is one of his fondest moments in gaming. He also spoke about the games he personally likes, and he tends to like the indie or small obscure games that generally don't tend to do very well or people rarely hear about - The man is a gamer. For those who haven't seen that interview, I highly recommend that you watch it; it really is insightful and details the history of Xbox really well, and all its blunders.
Getting back to this interview though, I'm sorry but I really don't see it. I understand that he has a job to do, and I understand that he has to earn profits for the company that employs him, but I don't see some cold, manipulative corporate guy who has to force a smile and pretend to be genuine... It's really not there. I'm generally a great judge of character, and Phil seems about as genuine as they come in this business.
And I'll say this; of all the higher-ups in this business, he's the most open and really seems to be the most honest and goes the most in-depth. But to play devil's advocate, let's just say it's all one big act and charade, then he's damn good at it!
And the only people denying his cred are people who are only in Xbox threads to stir up shit, usually those who don't even have xboxes... Not mentioning any names of courseHe' s not good at it really, the only people I see convinced of Phil's authenticity are Xbox fans by and large......

Tbh, that's not a criteria for me, if he plays games or not... It has more interest to me if he delivers great games to the platform ... At the end of the day, we are more familiar with Phil doing a job for Xbox than anything thing else...... I don't wish to know him personally or have him on my Xbox friends list or share a beer with him...... My only investment here would be the games....And the only people denying his cred are people who are only in Xbox threads to stir up shit, usually those who don't even have xboxes... If you actually had an Xbox that is.have him on my Xbox friends list
