The gears part where run for the shotgun was great. Cool to hear about his thoughts on streaming and PSO. Phil does have more knowledge than most and you can tell he likes gaming. Thanks for sharing OP.

>umm yeah im a gamer
>we are trying to do good with xbox
>i talked to sega about pso
basically nothing happened.
Your so wrong.

He talks about BC and what it takes to get new games and why some won’t come.
He talks about streaming and even mentions gamers making money by sharing their console while away even though he says he doesn’t think it will happen.
He talks about how Scarlet at e3 was basically the same that Sony has shown.
He talks about why he said the most powerful console MS has made vs the most powerful console.

I thought it was a good interview but with that said, its not really going to change anything - what they have been doing isn't working and hasn't worked for a very long time. I didn't see anything to change my opinion on where this is going i.e. subscriptions and subscriptions on top of the subscriptions.

I'm expecting easy under 6m units this year in Xbox as a Hardware sales, most probably under 5m units..... and I wouldn't be surprised by less then 4m units. They are telling consoles players to move to Win10 if they want to play games natively or they'll charge you more..... Game Pass is $4.99 a month on PC, and $9.99 a month for Xbox as a Hardware with the extra special gift of Xbox Live Gold charges as well.

I give them very little chance of success in what they are doing, but we'll see. To me they have very little chance other than to go back to being a traditional publisher like they were in the 90s.

Phil Spencer's image has been quickly manufactured by very smart PR people ever since 2013 in order to save the xbox division.I think they overdone it though and he's hardly convincing anymore for people other than MS fanboys who keep hyping up every fart he makes.

While the console warriors were sleeping (once Uncle Satya took over), Microsoft proceeded to dismantle many of there traditional products/services. With Xbox, it was pretty simple, get rid of it as a stand alone hardware product. First, Uncle Satya cut many of non-performing gaming developers/projects, then he basically dismantled what we refer to as the Xbox division (which actually had other products/services as welll), and then he basically put a freeze on development costs. In essence, Uncle Satya was killing off gaming as we know it - very similar to Windows Phone. Then Uncle Satya said, you need to get rid of that Xbox Store as there really isn't any difference between a game and a phone app. So, little Phil helped with eliminating the Xbox Store and moving all the Xbox games over to the Microsoft Store.

Uncle Satya spoke with Little Phil and said, "do you want a job?". Little Phil is like,"absolutely, beats flipping burgers". Uncle Satya says, "good, one word - SERVICES". Little Phil asks, "On what devices?" Uncle Satya says, "Everywhere". Little Phil looks confused as he likes to game himself and asks, "How do I do that with gaming?" Uncle Satya says, "You're the one that wanted the fucking job, you tell me?"

Little Phil has a tough job, the problem is to me its not a very realistic approach and in most cases its going to make their existing customers their enemy, this also ignores that they are pretty much incompetent as it pertains to digital distribution on PC - the Microsoft Store/UWP are/will continue to be a train wreck on a huge scale that dwarfs the issues they have in gaming, this is going to end much worse than Games for Windows Live.

None of this is secret, this is what Microsoft has been doing on the business/enterprise side of the house for 5-10 years, its just the average consumer is unaware i.e. Xbox as a Hardware user. I really think Phil realizes all this, but he wants a job - you can see it in his eyes that its over.

As far as Games as a Pass (GaaP), I don't see any harm in someone subscribing as its just a rental service and it probably beats buying games/apps in Microsoft's ecosystem at this point.

It certainly felt like hollow speak for a few years there, like 14-17 where MS was just mining E3 hype.

MCC was broken shit for like 4 years. Scalebound was hyped then canceled. The Phantom Dust E3 reveal was an outright lie. Crackdown 3 was featured year after year and delayed for it to be mediocre anyways. Sea of Thieves was forgotten by everyone like a week later.

He's likeable though and stuff like Game Pass sounds popular. MS finally building up their first party gives hope for next gen.

I kind of see MS as the underdogs. Not once have they won a console generation. I think Phil had a bad start with Xbox one. Who wouldn't want him to do great things with the Xbox brand? I'm not saying he could pull it off, but there is no harm in trying, and everybody wins if Phil can turn things around.

Its astonishing to see how many of you cant put your biases aside to just admit Phil has your best interest in mind. If we swap out cerny or layden with Phil for this interview and the words remained the same, ask yourself would you be saying the same thing?

Be honest with yourselves for a change guys. It's really getting pathetic

MrJared on Oct 24, 2014:

you understand it's all an act.. yes?
I mean, everything dude said was meant to make him seem like he's for the gamers!
the part about what he would do if he were in charge was pretty obvious... the guy was there, in a high level position that could have influenced shit, but instead, he decided went right along with it.
anyway, this whole attitude is an act to make it seem as if he is really a fresh start... when it isn't.
but hey it worked on you, and a vast majority of people who were dying for someone to have hope in with the xbone.... so MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

Every company is about making money, and it’s not about likeable OR people at all, it’s their company philosophy.

MS was about pushing whatever they wanted down people’s throats. That has changed since Ballmer’s been kicked out. Now it’s about asking what the consumer wants and giving him what he wants, and if you do That they will come to you. It’s a different strategy and it’s working very well for them, just look at their profits and trillion dollar market cap. By asking and giving, consumers are coming back en masse to MS and they are reaping the profits company wide right now.

People want to use office everywhere, MS delivers. People want SQL on Linux, MS delivers. People want Xbox games on PC, MS gives it to them. They don’t want to use the windows store, they put those games on steam. People have been asking for crossplay forever, they deliver yet again! They dropped windows phone as people didn’t want it and put all of their services where people wanted to be, on iOS and Android. BC is another one that’s a huge plus for consumers, and Scarlet having 4 gens worth. is a statement to that.

Ask Sony or Nintendo to release their games on PC where lots of people would like to play them and see what do. You could argue MS owns Windows 10, however having Sony games on Steam doesn’t give a 30% share to MS, so it doesn’t really matter much. MS could have tried to keep their games to Xbox but they decided to do what gamers were asking and let them choose.

If Sony and Nintendo were more for the consumer they’d give them choice. As it is, they’re forcing you to spend extra money on locked hardware ecosystems when they shouldn’t have to.

So while it is PR, they are still humble in the sense that their design philosophy is a company wide thing being pushed by the CEO down to all MS divisions and they all abide by it and push that vision, and that is what you are hearing in those interviews. It’s transparent and you can’t say they are lying, you are seeing it in all things MS right now so they do apply what they say.
Aye, ok.

This is exactly what it is.....Prior to XBOX-ONE, Mattrick was the best thing to happen to XBOX by MS fans...….The 2013 DRM fiasco was just too glaring, MS got roasted and toasted......In that case, it was too big of a sin, someone had to take a fall...And so, why not the captain of the XBOX ship? Good ol Don Mattrick.....Hell, he may not even be the one who had the idea for the 2013 DRM, it could very well be the guy under him, who convinced him 'Hey, I've done my research, this is how we take over the living room Don"....Huh! I don't know Phil, you're sure about that approach? I'm a games games man myself.....Hey! Don't worry Don, I got this, we lock the ecosystem, you must be online to play, pray, share...…..We locked them up pretty tight with LIVE last gen, and those coons still swore on LIVE......Hell, that momentum we had with 360....pffft!..... we will take it to the next level man...…..Sony has no chance with their shitty PSN, and come on Don, we are also NOT going to concede 40% power to these guys on hardware specs........So cool your hats, It's a lock baybeh! I got this ok......Hmmpphh! OK Phil do your thing......You sound passionate about it, let's see where it goes......

The rest is history,,,,,,

Was this thread about Phil or about sucking off Microsoft while disparaging the competitors in the same breath?

Goodness, I don't mind people expressing love for their brand, but the obsession with Savior Phil is unhealthy.

Usually you cheer for a hero after they've saved the day, not after they've spent all generation talking about saving the day.
Yep, usually when someone makes a bunch of promises that don’t come true I think of them more as a liar than a savior, but it’s been a hard half a decade on Xbox fans.

Surely you're joking, anyone could see from a mile away that Mattrick didn't give two fucks about gaming. I have been on gaf since 2005 and I don't EVER recall any significant push for Mattrick being anything but bad for gaming.
I would take Donny over Uncle Satya, who is really running the show and has been really for about decade behind the scenes. Little Phil is just happy sitting at the adult table, but you can see it in his eyes how he thinks this will turn out...I actually thought it was a good interview.

Welcome to Services i.e. Platform as a Service, Games as a Promise, Infrastructure as a Service, Desktop as a Service, etc. meaning subscriptions on top of subscriptions, than subscriptions to manage the subscriptions....than when Uncle Satya gets real nice he'll package your Xbox Ultimate Subscription with a xCloud subscription, then a Virtual Windows Desktop subscription....then when he gets really nice.... he'll package in Office 365....the Super Ultimate Microsoft subscription.

That's probably why you're not the ceo of a company
Oh you got that right, literally these subscriptions are the devil. Businesses are rapidly figuring it out.... it's not cheaper, it's a horrible road to go down as a customer, generally speaking.

Donny didn't come up with this shit....Uncle Satya did, in part, and Microsoft isn't the only one.

Phil is just an errand boy.

Thats your job as a consumer to decide if you want to support subs. Clearly all of the software (not just game companies) are pursuing SaaS so you'll be bucking the trend.
Personally I think game pass is the best way to segue to the cloud platform. I get all the benefits of running the software locally with no latency or significant download costs while getting access to a significant library.
Publishers get a steady source of income on software that previously was VERY frontloaded

They're slowly figuring it out in the business world that's its far more expense, it's going to be interesting when the consumer side starts seeing where this going.

Just watched the interview and his answer to the last question worries me. I dont want to have to rebuy some games to get scarlet enhancments.

Will have to hold out on third party releases until more info is released

I imagine it’s going to be very similar to the last gen transition where if you bought the previous gen game you get the next gen one for free (COD ghosts) or you pay a small amount to upgrade if they do a next gen version and you own it digitally (Minecraft).

Those decisions will be up to the publishers not MS/Sony.

You're right about that. I don't ever remember anyone ever saying anything good about Mattrick aka "the father of Kinect" even when the Xbox platform was doing well.

It was clear that after Balmer helped Peter Moore out the door that the Xbox division stagnated. There are endless quotes from mattrick that suggest the didn't give one fuck about gaming beyond the bottom line. Did we ever even see him give an interesting off-the-cuff interview like this giantbomb one with Spencer?
Even comparing mattrick and Spencer in the same sentence is simply idiocy

Nah, Balmer is a reminder what happens when you have a shithead who doesn't know squat about development try and run a software company. It's what I'm suffering thru right now IRL:messenger_winking_tongue:
Fascinating.

People like Phil Spencer,Larry Hryb,Jack Tretton,Shawn Layden,Yoshida, and previously Reggie from Nintendo America (and many more from big 3rd party publishers) they all remind me of your typical American salesmen from the 1960's,the kind of people who put a friendly face, a "me too" attitude (hey guys look we wear gamer T-shirts so we're gamers too"),in order to deceive with half truths/half lies your average household keeper into buying their products. They would try to sell you anything for the right price and always with a "trusty" smile on their face.

Very few executives seem genuine to me (in the way that they keep a proper "distance" and don't pretend to be our friends while still being likeable) .From recent memory Andrew House and Satoru Iwata really had this quality.

Good interview, and I really appreciated the time they spent talking about how PSO was a defining game for online gaming and RPGs on console, and why it is an important franchise.

Yeah - I'm ok with that. I really don't like the "hello fellow kids" some other publishers use (ie Ubisoft) - for me them using youtube personalities and twitch streamers to underpin their presentations jars with me because deep down I think those people are pond life.

Pond life, but in a suit, is ok.

I just watched the interview, and I really cannot see what some of you guys are seeing. It seems to me that your biases cloud your judgement, which is very unfortunate. I do not see a man pretending...or a pretentious man. I do not see fake smiles. I do not see "a ton of PR speak". All I see is a simple man who's passionate about games and gaming and is unafraid to talk about his own and the company he works for shortcomings.

Some say Spencer is not a real gamer, and I'll ask them, how do you know? There was an interview many moons ago with all the past Xbox heads from each generation (excluding Don Mattrick) hosted by Ryan Mcaffrey from IGN. In that discussion Phil spoke about a few things in his personal life and one of those things was gaming - he mentions a distinct memory he has with his son (or daughter perhaps) that is burnt into his mind and is one of his fondest moments in gaming. He also spoke about the games he personally likes, and he tends to like the indie or small obscure games that generally don't tend to do very well or people rarely hear about - The man is a gamer. For those who haven't seen that interview, I highly recommend that you watch it; it really is insightful and details the history of Xbox really well, and all its blunders.

Getting back to this interview though, I'm sorry but I really don't see it. I understand that he has a job to do, and I understand that he has to earn profits for the company that employs him, but I don't see some cold, manipulative corporate guy who has to force a smile and pretend to be genuine... It's really not there. I'm generally a great judge of character, and Phil seems about as genuine as they come in this business.

And I'll say this; of all the higher-ups in this business, he's the most open and really seems to be the most honest and goes the most in-depth. But to play devil's advocate, let's just say it's all one big act and charade, then he's damn good at it!

Considering how many games Spencer plays I would think he has more credit than your typical gaming suit. Comparing Spencer to someone like FilsAme is laughable to me.
Phil plays a lot? How do you know, is his gamertag public, does the intern at MS play games on his account?

Well, as far as what I've seen... She Yoshida plays games, he even has a Switch..... I've caught some of Yoshida's gaming streams too.... So there's that..... I feel, you shouldn't keep reminding folk you are a gamer, they should just see it and relate based on your knowledge and some odd details you would drop every now and then.....

He' s not good at it really, the only people I see convinced of Phil's authenticity are Xbox fans by and large......

Just give me five minutes with Phil in an interview and I'll ask him the hard questions...... I'll show you who he really is.....

Yea, they molded him out of pure clay and injected him with MS' latest Artificial Intelligence, the male version of Cortana, some pretty advanced stuff. Only the "Woke" people notice and won't be fooled!

Tbh, that's not a criteria for me, if he plays games or not... It has more interest to me if he delivers great games to the platform ... At the end of the day, we are more familiar with Phil doing a job for Xbox than anything thing else...... I don't wish to know him personally or have him on my Xbox friends list or share a beer with him...... My only investment here would be the games....

He is a corporate player portraying himself as a gamer to the great unwashed.

No one with an ounce of gaming credibility would have settled for the quality of the Crackdown 2 and 3 dumpster fires.
