But Karen Gillan

Yeah, oh well.

She is hot fucking fire!

And she is pretty damned good at gaming from the Jack Black YouTube channel.

I wonder if perpetually offended will say any white girls cosplaying Ariel after the release of this movie will be called out for "cultural appropriation".

In my personal opinion, if you, as an adult person really care that a MERMAID in a Disney film, something that doesn't exist is being played by a black actress, you might carry more prejudice that you actually think you do. Racism isn't an on and off switch. It's a scale. Be careful to not fall on it.

I want you to tell me how the following images make you feel.

Funny how Disney had qualms in casting a very fair-skinned chinese actress to play Mulan. She's way lighter than the average chinese person.

Disney are culturally retarded (when it comes to IdPol). Let's be honest here. And I say this as a passholder.

Does she bleach her skin? I know a lot of Chinese on the mainland bleach their skin to get "fairer" skin tones. When their natural brown/tanned skin is fine as is. Michelle Yeoh is still breathtaking!

Probably.

Imagine this going mainstream, Disney wouldn't look good :goog_unsure:

Ok, last time on this.

You are being pedantic about "realism" in biopics. Of course they can't get everything 100% accurately... It would be a snorefest! They inject some fiction to make the movie (and the historical figures lives) more exciting or more dramatic. They were people who lived human lives.

That doesn't change the fact that the majority of what is in the biopic (like Schindler's List or The Tuskegee Airmen) is largely truthful.

So your assertion that because the biopic isn't 100% accurate, that that means they can have a white Dr. King or Tupac is monumentally illogical and Intellectually dishonest!

"They got this and that wrong in this biopic, therefore it's all fake and we should have a European Jesus, black Hitler and Korean Dr. King!"

Please!
This essay boils down to the same "accuracy matters but accuracy doesn't matter" defense you've been relying on.

Oh, except for calling me a pedant simply because I can spot hypocrisy when I see it.

Also I thought you were done with this conversation (when you said how it was won/lost). Yet here you are leaping in again when you think you've got some masterful 'gotcha'.

Do you have any logical consistency at all?

It's really good artwork. Love all the detail work, I could never do that. Plus that new Gym Leader from Sword/Shield is a cutie!
She's like 12. Reported!

Bad fan art that doesn't follow proportions. Sexualizing PKMN girls is wrong.
The dude is just as bad. I mean LOOK at his haircut. I bet he is a dick.

This. People who are actually getting upset by this need to get a grip.

4 minutes later...

Oh wow. So we are just throwing around the N-word on Gaf now? That's where we are at?

Hahahahaha.

Honestly was pretty happy to see this casting choice because I knew it would provide some light Internet Entertainment as I laugh at the various bad takes. :)

As usual, you are the one who provides.

Here you are with your big balls swinging "people who are actually upset about this need to get a grip".
Yeah man, those damn "snowflakes" who get upset over a dumb kids movie right? People need to just learn to shrug things off and get on with their lives right?
It's kind of pathetic to throw a public hissy fit over something so mundane and meaningless right?

*Someone makes a joke*

OMG THIS IS AGAINST THE RULES! MODS! MODS! He said the naughty word!
Well, he didn't ACTUALLY say the naughty word and it WAS a joke but MODS PLEASE RESPOND!
The naughty word was hinted at in a joke! I'm melting! I'm melting! MOOOOOOOOODS!

Dude, you had a brilliant opportunity to dunk on people here because who really gives a damn about the race of an actor in a movie.
You could have made the point that a, say, Japanese version of The Little Mermaid would probably cast a Japanese Ariel so it actually does make sense that an American version would not necessarily need to cast a white person in the role.
This was an easy open goal for you to get one over on folks you obviously despise but instead you fell flat on your fucking face again.

Jesus, it was a fucking joke. Get a grip.

Virtue signallers. Outrage peddlers. It's all projection. They are always what they accuse everyone else of being.

You've provided one clear example, but this thread is full of them. Including Disney themselves.

TBH I didn't find McGinger's obvious reference to the N-word funny either. It didn't add much to the conversation to be frank. @Nobody_Important is 100% right in this case.

Like there's fun and jokes and all that, but that word just isn't something to joke about IMO. Not when a disgusting word like that, still has such power behind it.

Mulan is set in China and is Chinese, a fiction based on a real place and people.
Belle is French and the setting is France, a real people and a real place.
Jasmine is Arab, and the people of Alladin are based on real people.
Cinderella is European and the story is based in Europe.
Mowgli is Indian, a fictional character based on a real group of people and country.

Ariel is a mermaid. A completely fictional race of humanoid not based on any real humans. If anything, they're based off of stories from horny sailors thinking seaweed covered manatees are hot chicks. If any movie can take liberties of deviation from the original animation, this is the one.
Wait a minute mate! Are we forgetting that the Little Mermaid was created by a Danish author and the character is a big Danish icon? LM is just as much Danish as Belle is French.

No, but I am understanding that being "Danish" is a categorization of human, not a humanoid sea creature.
Why you so hung up on the "humanoid sea creature" I mean you know the tale, she grows legs, and walks on land etc. she becomes "cultured" so to speak, she becomes just like one of the humans.. It's not like she's a Terminator, designed by Skynet.. thus she can take any shape or form.... She has some cultural ties to the native country of the fairy tale's author. C'mon mang!

Everything can be something to joke about. And that word only has the power that you give it.

My family and I call each other the N word every day, the entire black community uses it to refer to each other and other races in a derogatory fashion, there's whole tv shows where the N word gets used all the time. Hell I have to catch myself on this board sometimes to keep from letting it slip. That's how integrated it has been in the black community, even though it's a pretty ugly word.

There's no need to be so fragile about this on behalf of black people. We joke about it all the fucking time, McCheese didn't say the word, and it was a pretty clever joke. From what I understand, McCheese is black. I don't get the outrage. The word has no more power than what you give it.

I disagree. Humor, with limits, is not humor. If you draw the line with something like this you have to draw the line with several other things. Like what happened with Isaac Hayes in South Park. And the joke was funny as hell.
