I think Death Stranding is going to flop and I'm scared

The gameplay so far has been bad, like really really bad. The mele combat looks like total crap, the weapons look boring and stupid (the bola gun holding BTs it's such a big turn off, takes away their otherwordly menacing figure), the mini boss battle was insipid, the physics are not that good neither and all the supposedly revolutionary connecting part of the game with the likes and people assisting you looks totally boring and irrelevant. The amazing and mysterious aura the game had, has been evaporated the more has been revealed of the game. It has lost it's own momentum.

I'm really really pessimistic about the game right now.

Actually I think it's pretty boring for what's been shown and not a thing I'd ever buy, but: A. It's Kojima, B. Media will push it hard, C. It's using real actors as marketing key point.

I don't see it flopping, but maybe it will just sell less than we expected before last footages.

Nah it won't be a commercial flop. It's going to be similar to Day's gone I think. Average reviews (maybe around 70 metacritic score) while selling a decent amount thanks to Kojima's name, current hype and Sony marketing.

I am more interested about what will happen for his next game.

I kinda want it to fail, because I'm sick and tired of people praising Kojima as if he's some kind of messiah of gaming.

I also don't appreciate the setting of this game. It gives me the impression it's trying to be weird for the sake of being weird.

It's Kojima's pretentious bullshit up to eleven, and I really want it to bite him in the ass.

Well, if it does not work out for Death Stranding, Kojima Production will move forward and do something a bit more grounded. In my opinion, we had too much teasing far too early. They might have then panicked and decided to drown people in explanations, seeing how people were puzzled about the game. I guess we're in for a hit or miss.

The game is not going to have universal taste and thus it won't appeal to everyone, bit will it flop? I don't think so. The game is to well publicised for it to fail and most of the gaming community are behind Kojima. My advice to anyone interested is to not dive in both feet first, you'll have to know if this game is right for you before you buy it. When it comes out, it's going to divide opinion, of that I'm sure, so people need to understand what they're getting into with this game.

I actually think the opposite, I think it will succeed.

The last gameplay footage looked like it was a continuation of the open world gameplay from MGSV: The Phantom Pain but with a bigger emphasis on story and I'm ok with that.

And how do you justify those buying it that you know will hate it? How do you get them to come back for the next game?

If someone buys it knowing they will hate it then that's on them. It's hardly Kojima's fault nor mine if they do something that stupid. It's not up to me to decide wether someone is sure that they will like Death Stranding or not. Hell, I'm not sure if I will like Death Stranding or not. If people are let down by the by the game, they lost out and will likely not buy the sequil. That happened to me with Destiny. It's shit, but it's a lesson learnt. The difference here is that Kojima (as far as I can tell) is being fairly honest with what the game is. Cryptic, but honest. So you can't say people are being lured in by false advertising here.

I have this exact thought for TLOU2 and Naughty Dog but I don't want it to fail ;)

I'm really really pessimistic about the game right now.

There is nothing to worry about his "future".

Because Sony has already done, and still is, making sure that this project does not fail.
Moreover, this videogame society suffering from votes has already decided the average of the votes to be given to the game (more than 90 of Metacritic given as a present, only to Kojima).

Therefore, from the point of view of "success", it can aspire to a success similar to Kojima's standards.
Because the society has already decided regardless of whether its project will be infallible.

The truth is that Death Stranding is not a game for everyone.
It is not a strictly stealth game, and it is by no means a MGS (as many believe).
Death Stranding it isn't a "spiritual successor" of MGS, because it will be profoundly different game, especially in terms of gameplay and story.

So, journalists have already been widely paid in advance by Sony and, moreover, they are ready to promote anything of Kojima to date.
(even if it was a point and click game)

The truth is that, more or less, the same situation of RDR2 will be created.
Game hailed by the world, considered a must play.
The truth is that it will be a game only for those who like to travel, see boundless landscapes, long and / or interesting dialogues, and strange and unusual things.
And, therefore, not really for everyone.
(and absolutely different from his previous videludic productions)

The money, the game, will eventually make them for sure, after all the money spent by Sony.
We need to see if they are deserved, on the whole of the players (and I'm not talking about votes)[and absolutely not the opinion of Kojima fans], or not.

I honestly don’t know how I feel about this game. I was a huge MGS fan, and was into it all the way until Phantom Pain came out. I’m hoping Phantom Pain turned out terrible because Kojima was in a real bad spot with Konami, and that the game turned out the way it did because he couldn’t finish it. Maybe this game he was able to actually finish.

my worry is that so much of Death Stranding that has been shown so far reminds me of Phantom Pain so much. From the way characters move, and the interface. Not to mention Kojima obsessively wanted to work with Hollywood celebrities, which only makes his time with the actors so much more limited. Keifer Sutherlands silences through so much of Phantom Pain is part of what made the story parts of that game so bad, because Snake had usually been a bit of a chatterbox in prior games. I think Mads is a good actor, but I’ve seen almost nothing with Norman Reedus, and nothing I’ve seen of him has made me much of a fan of his, but his deliver in Death Stranding so far looks exactly like I’ve been expecting: flat as hell.

I would love to be surprised, cuz like I said, I was a huge MGS fan, but nothing about this game since it’s announcement has made me hyped. I’ll play it, but I too am worried it’s gonna suck.

Exactly and i'm sure investors who know a thing or 2 about marketing aren't exactly thrilled about vague and pretentious this game is appears in marketing. At the end of the day, they want to make as much money as possible and want as wide an audience as possible. The lowest common denominator is going to look at this and say "Fuck this, I'm buying COD & more Fortnight VC."

I've enjoyed the balance of enthusiastic realistic detail, Wackiness & pleasure in Kojima's other games but after MGS V and how fatiguing the barren open world, Mission sorties and obnoxious "TV show opening credits" every hour - I'm not sure i'm as excited for this as i was when this was first announced or as i would be if i was younger with more free time.

As i'm older i feel i have more patience for art and understand concepts a lot better but i have less patience for massive open worlds with little to no purpose and have a lot less free time in general. I would play MGS V for a bout an hour at a time and sometimes i'd barely complete 1 mission and wasn't even rewarded with a god damn cutscene or story progression - I felt cheated out of my time!

I probably won't pick this up on launch but when i do, I'm playing it on Very Easy and i'm thankful they've included it.

OP, don't be. Kojima is NOT some second coming..not by a mile. There's much better stuff dropping this year and especially next with CyberPunk in Apr. and best of all, next gen holiday line up 👊.

i hope it does. can't stand that Kojima character.

even if it does turn out to be a total disaster of a game you'll still get his rabid fans praising it as some kind of masterpiece and we'll be told that most people just won't be able to comprehend the greatness of his mind. he is just a poor misunderstood person.

It will get 9s and 10s before anybody even loads the game, just because of the name.

I myself am on the fence. The game itself looks terrible, but is beautiful. It looks boring as hell, but at the same time interesting.

I’m just not sure... MGSV for me personally was utterly dreadful, and I would much rather be sat here talking about Silent Hills. But here we are...

It will sell millions regardless, again, just because of the name.

I reckon a 92 from critics and an 85 from users. Maybe a bit lower from users depending on how the extremity votes go.

Not really a fear of poor sells because kojima+sony esclusives it's enough for at least 4-5 mil copies.

But yeah the combat\action gameplay looks a little turdy.

But tbh the only kojima games with good combat are the zoe games, mgs never had decent combat, not even mgs5 (greath stealth, mediocre shooting) so it's a little ingenuos expecting something mindblowing in the combat departement from kojima, same with animation.

Also kojima said many times that combat is the last resource in this game, you probably are gonna use non-lethal weapon for most of the time or directly avoiding combat.

I just hope that stealth, exploration, story, pg etc. Are top tier.

He earned by himself the right of being praised that much, like it or not.

I think the game will succeed, I dont have too much hype for it but I'm pretty sure the game is one of those still unknown things that catches you off-guard and surprises you in a very good way.
At the end of the day, it's a product of one persons ambitions and ideas instead of a company looking for easy money.

It'll still sell over 2 million even it gets average reviews. It's the first kojima game since he packed he's cardboard boxes and left Konami so all the kojima fans will eat it up. It being a playstation exclusive will help to, now if it was an xbox exclusive...

But it's a Hideo Kojima game - by Hideo Kojima! There is no way it can score less than 169% on Metacritic!

He's doing something interesting and different, the only fear regarding it failing for me is the fear that people will retreat back to safe stuff.
The stuff that’s different sounds the most interesting to me, but there’s also a lot of systems that Kojima thinks is new that have been done in games for a long time now. When the internet was younger, some of these stranding ideas sound crazy and cool, but after so long of having shit connected in other games and social media, I kinda don’t want it in games anymore. I play games to escape that bull shit now.

Phantom Pain also didn’t give me much hope that Kojima knows how to make an interesting open world. He seems to think pretty scenery is enough, but PP had so much god damn nothing in between areas that it was boring. Breath of the wild was that kind of open world done right where every part of the world felt unique and fleshed out. The footage Kojima showed of Death Stranding were giving me PP flashbacks though.
