So, in the end, what is the GAF verdict on Death Stranding?

If you're on the fence about this, please do yourself a favor and at least Redbox it. I can understand not wanting to risk dropping $60 on a title you're worried you may not enjoy.

But do yourself a favor and don't approach it with bias of any form. Just go in. If it's for you, awesome, enjoy the ride. If it's not, well, then no big deal, invest your time into another title you'll appreciate. But I will honestly say that I wish it was up your alley.

All I can say is that I dropped money on the collector's as soon as it was announced, and I legit feel like it was money well spent. Ten fold. I swear to god at this point I'm 11-13 hours in and in Episode 3, and not slowing down at all. I'm deep in the long haul, and I can't wait to finish it.

I saw it was mentioned earlier as well, but I wanted to add that I would most certainly be interested in this game if Kojima's name wasn't on it. That being said, of course I was intrigued to see how Kojima's first game at his new/own company would pan out. But if you could give me the EXACT same game, but remove Kojima's name from all of it, I would've definitely still be all in.

That being said, knowing Kojima's name is on it is pretty cool considering all the times his previous titles woo'd or wow'd me. The MGS series, even when not perfect, contained a ton of memorable experiences that I will never forget. Death Stranding also contains such memorable experiences, believe me.

To people who cant decide if this is for them i advise to go and watch Too old to die young the whole season.
If you can sit through that and enjoy it you will enjoy this too.

For now is the opposite of what i was thinking before the purchase, great and addictive gameplay loop but boring characters and acceptable story.
But i'm only 15 hours in so i can completely change my mind.

What I said in the OT.

You know this game is fire, when you're a grown ass adult, doing your business thing at work... and still thinking about what course you're going to take when you get home to play. Also, every FedEX and UPS dude now is Sam to me. They look just as ragged, even first thing in the morning, lol.

And I am still super early in the game, which gets even better and better as you progress.

This is why Sony doesn't have a refund policy or a Game Pass. Hype it up, and hoover as much $60/unit sales as fast as possible.

Over the past 3 years there has been a lot of hype generated with trailers, but more recently with the gameplay showings KJP has been EXTREMELY open about how it plays and the delivery man aspect.

DS is not a perfect game. If I were to change things it would be the delivery locations are fairly mundane. When you arrive at them they look just like the last. If we ever get a sequel then I hope they get more fleshed out - just more interesting places to drop off I suppose. I'm also not a huge fan of the bike. It feels a little one dimensional and doesn't control or feel attached to the world as well as it could be. Maybe some more physics need to be applied to the game world.

Minus those points above though and I'm easily giving this my GOTY. Building within your own game world and for it to be shared in an others game....you feel obliged to create time savers for other players....that is a step above anything that has gone before and it's completely seamless. A real milestone I think. The delivery aspect is hugely rewarding in that your have successfully planned, fabricated equipment, navigated and overcome obstacles while admiring the world and the music.

I think it's astonishingly fresh, inventive and fun.

Big games are why you don't review a game 2 weeks into its life, at least give it a year.

Refreshing game that can really get its hooks into the type of person who likes simulation games. If one's not scared to sink some time into a game and work through its complexities it becomes apparent that it has super solid core design that is rewarding to play around with. I would liken the appeal of its core gameplay to space simulators, oddly enough, where it's about ressource gathering and trading (in this case, delivering) to build up your own means to gather and trade more efficiently. Given that it also successfully makes traversal way more interesting and rewarding to conquer than any of those kinda games is a huge bonus in terms of engagement. On top of that it has a weird and compelling world, excellent production value and a story that works in tandem with all of its elements. I think it's pretty much a triumph if one looks at it from the viewpoint of bringing a more niche gaming experience to the forefront. Looking at it from the viewpoint of Sony's usual exclusives I can understand that a certain type of person wishing for a new Metal Gear Solid or Last of Us could be disappointed, but that's not really fair. Except for a few shortcomings (combat is merely fine, buildings repeat often) that are completely normal for a new IP with so many new elements to get right, it nails what it wanted to be.

Got my hands in the game and damn this game is the best game I have played all year, BT encounters are so tense. I am liking the lengthy cutscenes as well. Can't wait to see how this game comes together at the end.

It's awesome. I'm 40 hours in and I'm still on chapter 5. You'll know you're sharing a world with me if you see zip lines all over the damned map.

After player for like 7 hours straight I got to say for my initial impressions this game is a 9/10 so far. I like this kind of games and the freedom it offers. I am now rather undicieded on the BT's cause they are awsome and anoying at the same time, i'll give it a bit on that front. Also I thought people said this game had a slow start? Maybe its me and I am moving at a break neck speed cause I am already completing chapter 2 and thats with side deliveries and
restoring the bike which is pretty awsome

In episode 9 now and it is my game of the year for sure. Most likely my favorite PS4 game together with The Last Guardian and Yakuza 0.

Game is really really good. I cant understand the 4/10 reviews. If your a gamer who is bored of all the samey AAA games then give this game a shot.

Story is crazy. Definetly not the best but very enjoyable with all the weird caracters and bizarre plots.

Kojima is a master in its craft.

9.5/10 for me so far

Man, the last time a game felt so perfect for me, was MGS 3 Snake Eater on PS2. I think you either love DS or not.

10/10 for me. Love the trekking, mountaineering and planning of deliveries. Typical crazy Kojima story and cast on top. Some great action where you can chose the amount of your involvement. MGS style tech, weapons and vehicles to play around with. A very long game, if you want to see and do everything.

But nobody should feel forced to get this game. It is great, but definetly not for everyone and then you better rent it or wait for discounts.

Is this the first game you can farm likes in?

i get it for social media and friend groups (even if I dislike it 😜) but it shouldn’t be a thing in gaming.

I cant put the game down!!! Its all I think about. Its the first game I really dont care when I have to walk to the same place twice. For example in chapter 3 I have to get to a mountain. First time its a big puzzle how to get up, but I place a ladder here, ladder there, and then when I'm on top, use the rope system to get down and lay a rope down. So the next time I have to get there I know it wil be easy walk. And when you have the exo skeleton you can run pretty fast. or spend some time building out the road and take a bike halfway there

GOTY for me. And the way this game works with episodes is done so well just like red dead, new area every time, new character introductions constantly. the pacing is also very good!

And the characters are really great. The only other games that had this for me were the witcher 3 and red dead. I just get sad when I see the reviews :( And I cant help but think they played a different game lol and its not just 1 its alot of them. Even the reviews who gave it a 9, if u read it u dont think they actually had fun but dam this game has so much deep gameplay!

And fuck that boa gun is fucking fun

Theres an idea behind it and Kojima explained it very well. He wants people to connect and motivate each other, he wants the lonely people to feel that there’s people out there for them

If it’s like everything else in life, the things that deserve the likes get overlooked, while they rush for their fav creator, or the best troll or whatever.

Its not something that should be in games, because it always rushes for the lowest common denominator.
IMO

It’s a game. You something build by other players that helped you? You like. It’s not necessary

Really enjoying it! So original and refreshing to see something so unique.

I guess its only weak point for me is how cut scene heavy it is. I prefer storytelling during gameplay. But at least all the cut scenes do look great.

8.5/10 for me so far! Its not for everyone, but would strongly recommend to any gamer with sophisticated tastes just for its pure originality and creativity.

Reading the comments it is pretty much where I thought it will be.

Very very positive.

Like reviewed there is nothing divisive except a few low scores.

I completly disagree. Until release, even most journalist still had no clue exactly what DS was.

Lets be honest,if Kojima came out and said what DS really is" walking simulator filled with a bland world,tedious/repetitive fetch quest(chores),extreme micro manageing systems, and lack of combat"...it would be a hard sell".

what? this doesn't make any sense. it's not like i am running past a Timefall Shelter in order to give likes to a no peeing sign. the shit you really need and use and which makes your life better, you are going to take a minute to stand there and spam likes. a lot of things that are useful, like bridges, you gives auto likes as you use them.

honestly no idea how you even "troll" in this game. it's not like Dark Souls where you could put a "jump here" sign down on a cliff that goes nowhere. or you could put up a bridge that isn't really there and people fall on the ground. you are kind of limited to posting helpful things.

fav creator? best troll? again i have no idea what you are talking about LOL seems like a lot of unnecessary paranoia for a really nice and helpful mechanic. yes there are Likes but that does not make it Just Like Everything Else On the Internet.

i mean he would also be lying in that case so he wouldn't be being honest.

you mentioned no combat, you haven't actually played this game have you? just posting endless gripes in DS threads from the sidelines? must suck. why not play a game u like?

This is a very pro Sony community though.

No,genius. It has combat, but its not main focus with laughably easy, repetitive enemy encounters. Mules usually go down in the same fashion.BTs simply require a quick one hit blood grenade. It in no way represents the dark, terrifying trailers. Its called being subjective.

For me, it is a 10/10 for various reasons that I can write some paragraphs about how I feel when playing it. It can become my GOTG replacing Destiny 1 and 2 (because of obvious reasons about Bungie's questionable design philosophy and management).

I will put these two reviews from small YouTube channels that resonated with me the most about the game:

Darkstationcom's Review
