Gamescon is also open to the public and has been for years; E3 only opened to the public last year.

Also this alone isn't a good reason for them to skip E3; it's still a cornerstone of the industry. Treating this shit like a high school popularity schoolbook is pretty shallow and not only that, E3 also benefits the retail chains and smaller developers with networking. Just gonna kick 'em to the curb too?

Why would any real Sony fan even want Sony to show up at LESS events is completely beyond me.

Believe me, not ALL Sony fans are cool with this. But there are some who like to push this notion of Sony being flawless in all their decision making. Almost as if they are incapable of making mistakes.

THIS would be a mistake.

Well, according to Sony E3 isn't worth it anymore due to not lining up with corporate vision, yet somehow there's room and money for "hundreds of more events".

I thought there were roughly 10 big game shows per year sprinkled throughout the year.

I never knew there were 200 more shows around the world worth promoting at. You never know. Sony might put up a PS5 kiosk beside the hotdog guy at the nearby Canadian Tire.

Think they went back to one team for Uncharted 4, which is why they've gone so long between titles

I thought that too but they did have some miracle turnaround on the DLC so perhaps team two was working on that at the same time given it was quite a long game.

I think we are going to get a steady stream of news from Sony all year, apart from PS meeting we won’t have to wait for big events.

Foolish decision to skip E3, and makes you really wonder what's happening at Sony, but moving on. On to the official reveal.

It amazes me how many want to act like we are still in the 90s when it comes to E3, but also push GamePass/xCloud as having a bright future. We live in the internet age. It doesn't matter where or when Sony drops PS5 info, it will spread through the internet like wildfire. Just look at how quickly the Wired article spread and how prevelant the conversation about its contents were. Or how in just two days just a PS5 logo got 5.2M likes on Instagram, by far the most popular gaming post. People are ready for the PS5. No E3 showing be damned.

I think Sony is smart to do this. Even the PS5 logo reveal got a lot of attention, it was memed all over the internet.

This isn't even really unprecedented. Look at Rockstar, they don't bother with E3 reveals. They just needed to drop a GTA V trailer and it goes viral.

I think Sony can do more with less, they have gained a lot of momentum from PS4 and PS4Pro. Has Microsoft gained any momentum with Xbone X and Xbone from 2019 since most eyes were on them? I cant tell. They also did the Xfridge console reveal, is that helping them? I cant tell.

Exactly, Rockstar is the most successful developer out there and they've been doing their own thing for a long time, but some really ignorant people think Sony is losing out on something, lol. In the age of social media and live streaming it makes more sense to do your own thing and save tons of money. Let's be real though, the only ones crying about this are pro Microsoft sheeplets.

If they play it smart and have their own focused events then yes, they can do great with it. They needs to communicate a bit more and really wow 🤩 people, even Apple is a bit less tight lipped sometimes :p.

E3 2019 was truly dull, if Sony skips E3 this year too, it might kill E3.
Been enjoying E3s in combination with lurking gaf for a really long time.

Not gonna follow E3 anymore if it's only Ubidance and Msft exaggerated cheers...

Phil: one more year... monsters for brkfst
Audience: Wooohoo! Oh Aaaargh Yeah!!!!!!

Okay so they will have a presence at the hundreds of other gaming events besides E3, but the majority of those other events take place outside of the States.

Has Sony perhaps written off or lower prioritized the U.S. gaming market?

No E3=no GAF gifs/hype threads. But all the newly registered kids can't remember.

Sony skipping E3, or any other conventions, means they can drive the narrative to their liking, because releasing YT trailers or press notes means there will be no journalists running around, making interviews, asking all sort of questions, especially the inconveniente ones, like "where are all the games you promised all the years ago?".

I feel like the backslash they got from the few past years made them rethink their strategy, they even openly admitted they've learnt their mistakes and don't want to announce things when they are not ready, and when they are it doesn't necessarily mean the timing is on par with some gaming convention. So releasing info on the web or their own events gives them the ability to present stuff when they are ready to do so.

I think it will work out well for Sony. If there was a big enough value to be at E3 they would be there. :)
Lets enjoy the awesome ride in February
