I was thinking yesterday why the "insiders" have different TFs for either Xbox One Series X and PS5.
And I reached the follow guess....
MS and Sony probably shipped devkits with different clocks to developers, so it is totally possible one developer having the Xbox stronger than PS5 and another having PS5 stronger than Xbox... the same can say about the same power or close enough to say the same.
Why that? I can think in a lot of reasons:
- To track leaks... that way MS and Sony knows from which developer machine the info come.
- To try to despite the power of the console to the competition... so Sony and MS knows +- what their competition machine will be but not the final clock / power.
What do you guys thinks?
So here's what I think:
1) Devs are briefed on target specs when they get devkits or maybe even a bit before so that they can start working on games
2) Target specs might not have specific values, instead they might have ranges. Ex: CPU clocked from 3.2 to 3.6 GHz or 16 to 24 GB GDDR6. There was a guy on era that shared a Xbox 360 target spec and it looked like a mess with all sort of ranges on CPU, GPU, Memory, HDD size and speed, etc. On that target spec some stuff was confirmed/decided, other stuff was still TBD
3) Devkits are updated over time until all dev teams get the final update with final specs, which usually happens like a few months before launch (I'd say something like August or September at most)
4) The SoC for both consoles is ready by now, they're just toying with clocks and stuff like RAM amount until they meet their deadline for production to start
5) Not all developers have the same devkits (first party are always the first to get the most updated stuff)
Matt on era said that at this point devs have a pretty good idea of where things are going to fall.
What I'm thinking is that some devs have more recent info and others have older info, that's why you hear some say 12 TF while others say something different.
We've been hearing PS5 > XSX from multiple people, some with connections to playstation, some without.
We've also been hearing XSX > PS5 from guys that are Xbox "insiders" or journalists.
Personally I'm thinking the XSX might have a better GPU and CPU while PS5 will have a better SSD and memory but, the difference that some people are wishing for (9 TF vs 12 or 13 TF) is not happening.
I'm going to make a prediction on GPU performance and say that the PS5 is going to be around 11.x TF while the XSX is at 12.1 TF.
