Did Xbox suddenly realize that PlayStation has a beast of a console with a very similar Teraflops benchmark? Is this the reason why they wanted to get ahead of the game so quickly and nonchalantly to the point that I had to find out this news on GAF and not on the Big Stage of E3?

Perhaps MS has had this planned well in advance. Sony is awfully quiet on anything next gen so they must be hard at work as well trying to release any info at the right time. Too me it looks like MS is clearing the air now and paving a way for the games ONLY at E3. Sony has yet to reveal specs or their console so they may be holding out until E3.

weren't the consoles already revealed at this time in 2013?
but the thing is, either way the leaks were crazy last gen, we knew everything about the new systems ahead of reveal, even stuff that was eventually dropped. like Sony's used games lock that they dropped after Microsoft had a shitstorm coming for them after revealing their plans.

so even with NDAs there would have been leaks within days, because that is a pretty save thing to leak as there are dozens of people in the same room listening to the same stuff. it is impossible to narrow down a leaker when the leaked info was shown to a conference room full of people.

I admit: Microsoft officially raised the bar very high for Sony to match their 12TF, an achievement even I can't deny on a traditional gaming console.

yeah we had the patents and everything. and insiders that also leaked pretty good specifics about the hardware said they are actually implementing these locks. and that was really close to the final reveal... and after the reveal Sony higher ups dodged questions about these patents when asked if used games would work on PS4, they were not able to just say yes they danced around it giving vague answers.

basically the system would lock the serial code that was unique to each disc (stored in the inner most lane on the disc) and that disc would then be only playable on the PS5 you installed it on first.

I guess my concern is why did they release it in such an anticlimactic way through an article? I know Mark Cerny did the same thing, but Xbox reveals these kind of things in a rather monumental way alà The Game Awards 2020.
