Xbox Series X Can Resume Games After Reboot.

IbizaPocholo

NeoGAFs Kent Brockman

In a recent podcast, Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb, Microsoft’s director of programming on Xbox Live, talked about the feature. “I had to reboot because I had a system update, and then I went back to the game and went right back to it. So it survives a reboot.”

The feature will work even if you’re resuming the console from standby. It’s unlikely to have much impact on always-online titles since they require a constant server connection and will often quit if that’s severed. But the convenience of just pausing and switching off the console rather than worrying about save points is nice.

Mehhhh.

Its doesnt bother me reboot a game.

We need a real option to buy the console like play all of xbox games or better exclusives.

Or at least put my library games that i got of 360 and play in the NEW console. Not like PS store that is different plataform.

To be honest this things dont make me buy a console honestly.

This kind of thing is going to be amazing next-gen. Being able to do it with multiple games as well.

Goodbye pointless, annoying logos and start-up sequences. You can just pick up your Cyberpunk (or whatever we’ll be playing) adventure exactly where you left off, whenever you feel like it, no strings attached.

Which gives me more incentive to game, frankly.

It already resumes after you turn it off if you use fast start (don't really turn the console all the way off), but resuming from a full shut or reboot? That's cool if true.

How does that work? If ya reboot, da ram gets flushed? AKA data gone ... ?

Like a hibernation on your PC, but thanks to games being in VM, it's way easier. It's like a pausing VMware image and restarting your main computer. It just dumps the part of RAM into HDD (sorry SSD in this case, because I understand how important is the marketing talk). Nothing about "super fast SSD"...

Google translate from Dutch (I'm too lazy to do it myself):
In the Scarlett video they mentioned using the SSD's as virtual memory so that might be it as there shouldn't be a loss of data.
Larry Hryb, director of programming at Xbox Live, also took part in the podcast episode and spoke about the Quick Resume function of the console, among other things. This gives gamers the option to end a game session at any location and to continue at a later time at that point, without there being loading screens or waiting times.

According to Hryb, this function is thanks to the custom built-ssd in the XBox Series X available for different games. Players can therefore quickly switch between the sessions of those games. Hryb explains that the option to continue quickly at a point in a game is also possible after a reboot of the console. This means that a system update does not interrupt progress in a game session and that players can simply turn off their console to continue where they left off at a later time.

If you can resume after reboot, it implies something to the effect of save-states.

In which case....

Console save-states finally? Goodness yes.

Then why not stop talking about not buying it, and just not buy it. Agreed?

Actually im pc gaming too.

I have never had favoritism on consoles or in a company, I try in all areas

I know, but what is needed is to respect the purchases we made in past generations as in Steam

Then why not stop talking about not buying it, and just not buy it. Agreed?

It is a forum, everyone can comment, it is in each of us whether we take the opinion into account or not

Ive seen paper, tflops, streaming, services, etc and nothing about games. As it is said, and so it is actually written(for a decade ), MS could fold up their tents tomorrow and zero.zero of actual players would care.

Says the youngins who never been in a near monopoly market. If you don't think Sony won't fuck customers over the second MS left and are the only game in town I have a bridge to sell you. It was not cool when Nintendo ruled with an iron fist and sure as shit would not be if Sony does. They will bully publishers, developers and screw over customers who are forced to into their eco system. When the PS5 turns out to be a beast thank MS.

This will be much faster going forward though, using SSD it will be much faster to install games.

Last time I checked SSD didn’t improve download speed 🤣

As somebody that hd to update his pc install of modern warfare recently, trust me... patch installs are a TWAT. Something like 60 odd gb and 50 odd gb patches in the space of a week or so...

*shoot me*

So like on Switch?

Switch doesn’t do a hard boot when you “turn it off”, it doesn’t flush the memory the same way a cold boot does. It essentially does the exact same thing your phone does, you can turn it off (sleep) or turn it OFF (and reboot). (But yes of course you can do a full reboot of the switch, but this will flush the memory and stop the resume).

This Xbox news essentially means you can reboot the console and turn it off fully, and your state is saved.

Pretty nice to be fair, and if the consoles have an ultra fast boot from cold, then you won’t even need to use sleep mode.

It’s worth noting that the PS5 will do the same btw.

Yay!

Will they let us have more than one save state per game though .. - it's a console - you know the answer already..
