Digital Foundry - Dualsense vs DS4 - What have we really learned?

Do find his speculation at the end of the video interesting.

Basically, he talks about Sony investing their budget in more unique features, versus a more powerful box, in regards to the controller which is both doing more and likely costing more than the Xbox Series X’s.

I wonder if this will be the case all around. Looking at the highly unique nature of the SSD (a real possibility of no loading ever), the controller... I see it.

If Sony delivers really unique hardware, in an almost Nintendo-esque, but less extreme way, I can see a very fun generation with a real difference between the consoles.

Ok what the fuck was this video for ?
To talk a bit more about xbox?
I guess.
He keeps repeating to go and read the wire article and that there is nothing new to talk about here other then the design.
Oh and he cant believe the large amount of people reacting to the controller.

Hey digital foundry. Just admit already that you are paid by microsoft.
This is just too obvious and its pathetic.

Anyone here wants to start a console vs tech channel? You got my sub on day one.

Faster charging, more durable than micro-USB, just a better plug altogether

is it just the cables i use or do they fall out more often. I've got this problem on both my phone on my switch. I bought the cables of amazon for length, but every time i go back to my switch after putting down its slightly moved so its not charged.

I'll simply say that so far, it feels like the vast majority of Sony's budget went into actually engineering their product whereas MS put all their money behind slick marketing. Two very different strategies.

There is something up with the touchpad. Wonder if there is a screen under it or if its removable based on a Sony patent.

Disagree. Both consoles seem to have had a ton of custom work and love poured into them, from both a hardware and software perspective.

I would argue that what we’re seeing from Sony might go a bit further. They’ve broached some fascinating territory in how they’ve engineered their storage solution, and even stepped away from the existing paradigm for GPU/CPU usage and cooling. Of course, the controller as well.

As a fan of the... this is going to make me sound like a geeky Chad Warden, ‘PS Trilogy’, and all the crazy stuff those three consoles did, I’m kind of happy to see this Sony back. PS4, while a great piece of hardware, was very straight-laced, and not as fun in this aspect.

I would think we would know if he had back buttons/paddles, wouldn't we? Or would they save that for another surprise drop?

Hard to say really. They made it clear in the PS Blog article that this info drop relates to them sending these controllers to developers. We got this heads up because Sony didn't want devs to leak the info first.

With that... I think it's up in the air if you want to be cynical. Sony doesn't necessarily need devs to know about back buttons if the purpose is to just let users re-map face buttons. They would absolutely need to let devs know if they could be used as extra inputs.

My take is that back buttons will continue to be a "premium" feature tied to accessories or "Pro" model controllers. The average user isn't likely to care about re-mapping buttons. Those that do would gladly pay extra for it.

Well he makes a good point. I too am baffled at the response. The biggest difference in the PS5 controller vs the PS4 controller is aesthetics. Most of the button layout is exactly the same.

Pointing out the obvious that MS put more resources into raw power vs Sony is evident. Simply by considering that the XSX has the better GPU,CPU, bandwidth. It even has a tower like design to reach 12tf " sustained performance". Where as Sony went with a variable clock that can peak at 10.2tf.

If their USB-C port is anything like the quality of their phones it's a terrible addition.

I've had two Sony Xperia phones now and both type C ports eventually won't hold leads in very well and just fall out very easily.

ok, fair enough... we can agree to disagree. I think of XSX is a direct continuation of their work with X1X and their design philosophy established there. They may have poured love into then, but this next console and really boring and bland to me and doesn't push the envelope in anything but GPU performance. Anyway, glad you like both though. :)

Either you're incredibly ignorant and haven't done your research or you're being willfully ignorant with fanboy goggles.
Please do some reseach on the XSX. Its highly customized on several fronts and especially where it counts most in terms of power (gpu). To make such a foolish statement like this shows how low of an IQ you have. The people MS have designing the XSX from a hardware/software perspective are some of the brightest people in the industry.

The only way you can come up with such a moronic opinion is if you completely ignored all the tech videos/articles on the XSX.

what about directstorage, direct ml, velocity architecture, sfs, dli, project acoustic or parallel cooling?

I've got problem on my switch and Sony phone so I think this could be USB c problem.

I think it's great they're expanding their DX12U API for cross-platform compatibility, and their work on the XSX cooling is... cool, but I personally don't feel Xbox speaks to me whatsoever as a console gamer *shrug*.

I actually believe Xbox success in the console space endangers console gaming. I'm glad they're there to offer some competition regardless though.

I do not think it is a proper assessment to say that put all their money behind slick marketing (despite choosing areas to invest in that are ALSO easier to build PR around it... the Xbox brand is built around Gavin the performance crown, it would have been a bit of a disaster if they had the weaker console again), but personal insults and a laundry list of PR terms seems the wrong way to go about it IMHO.

I had the same problem with my Xperia, and myself also thought the port is crap. But once when I picked up the phone from the charging dock, I noticed that a bit of dust clog fell out. I checked the port more carefully and I saw that at the bottom dust has built up and because of it the plug wouldn't go in all the way. Obviously I cleaned it and now works like new.

Some people have said the dualsense will features varying levels of resistance. The 2nd wired article even said that you feel different levels of resistance when firing a bow.

Im curious if this is true and how it will work. The Daulsenses "adaptive triggers" use voice-coil actuators which if you google that you will see they are still a type of electrical motor, so its not that different to electric motors used in current gen controllers.

Also how would resistance not be able to be damaged? If a normal ds4 trigger has about 100g resistance if the ds raises resistance to 500g, what if the gamer puts 2000g of force on the trigger?

When I listened to that part I couldn’t help but wonder how easily it would be to damage that kind of component

Slick marketing?
I disagree. I think MS knows they have the more powerful console and are very confident about it. I argue you're confusing "slick marketing" with confidence and being direct. XSX is the more powerful console. PR terms? Such as? Because Sony got plenty buzzwords :)

I've said this in another thread were people talked about the advantages of PS5 which devs weren't allowed to talk about (yet) but my guess is that devs were talking about the gamepad there. It could elevate the experience in ways that is impossible for other systems, but I also believe that gimmicky gamepads have never really fared well in the past, especially when it comes to 3rd party support.

It's going to be interesting to see what this gamepad (especially the triggers which sound like force feedback triggers) can do.

That is not the 3.5 hole, that is the mic opening. It probably won't light up.

You can see its like one's on cellphones and not a round 3.5mm hole.

Click on the high res pics and zoom all the way in.

What are the benefits to lighting up all the buttongs etc other than for aesthetic reasons? I find that to be distracting actually. One light is enough

Maybe it's a little unfair of me to say they stuck most of their budget into marketing... but it should be remembered that "Xbox" started out as being a "DirectX-Box" and it was a way for them to push their PC-based graphics technologies into the console space. I don't even like DX, I mostly avoid Windows, so it really makes no sense for me to feel warmly about what they're doing on Xbox.

All the things mentioned by pasterpl pasterpl I feel are easy for MS, they're a $1trillion behemoth of a company. They have enough money that they can even go as far as to pay an army of actual human beings to write good things about them on forums...

When your platform is a 12tf console that have a better gpu, cpu, and more bandwidth, then it's safe to say MS put more of their budget into raw power specs vs, say controller features, or audio,etc...

WTF - You prefer PS5 hey that's great, but you're going off the deep end now with some of your wild console warring takes. Calm down, they're just plastic toys not nuclear warheads.

I still watching the video, Rich used a bad game example for the feedback on triggers: Crysis 3. IMO one of the best example for the feedback trigger is the first Fable because the main char hand rumble with your joystick and you need to invest skill points for make better accuracy/less rumble.

Crysis 3 on the other hand, he just use a bow with none into precision of an actually bow using. Just push and the arrow go.
this doesn't sound annoying at all...
there is a certain balance to maintain between nice feature and annoying novelty...

So, uh, anyone else worried about the privacy issues of it having a built in Mic that recent history tells us will be impossible to really turn off to guard our privacy while we occupy our free time to our favorite hobby?
Edit:
So it's always listening. Hope that the mic can be completely disabled. Otherwise, it's a nice controller. Hope devs use those haptics.
At least we ain't alone!
