Sometimes this game is really cool and other times it's fucking annoying as shit. It's so inconsistent. There are so many poor design choices thrown in with the good ones. Every time I play, I either leave wanting more or leaving wanting to uninstall.

Man, I honestly don't see how you can be a fan of the original and like what this game is. It flushes all of the characters and themes right down the toilet to be some kind of goofy mess of a thing. How SE could screw up such a "simple" task is beyond me. I should have known it would go in this direction when the first encounter with Aerith, which in the original game is a simple and innocent moment, got turned up to 11 with silly new elements. It's really true, you can never go home again ...

I decided to youtube the ending to see how ridiculous it was.
I expected Advent Children levels which i'm not a fan of in it's own right, but Jesus fucking Christ this ending.

These two images alone conveyed more of an emotion reaction towards how sinister and powerful Sephiroth was than that entire ending.

Where is the subtlety or charm gone.

I'm kinda interested to know if people who never played OG FF7 understand whats going on in the story after all that?
Also are elements like Jenova going to be of any interest to new players after seeing that giant thing. The ending looked like it just spunked all its load into peoples faces. What else have you got to "wow" people with your fight porn?
The very last fight on Disc 3 had an oh fuck yes moment to it and it was fully earned.
This was just kingdom harts crap.

I can't say anything about the actual game itself as I don't own it. The demo seemed quite good but i'm not exactly hopeful towards the story.

Finished the game at 41 hours. Really enjoyed the experience, though the ending is mediocre at best, and I don't get their rationale for changing so much. The storyline is what makes the original still special to this day. It only makes sense to change this if you are certain you can improve or at least meet the same quality (which is unlikely, as FF7's storyline is known to be unique). Imagine the time and effort they wasted on these changes only to result in something worse. If they just stuck to the original storyline, they could've spend those recources on perfecting other bits of the game, it could've been perfect. Now you're left with a story that:

- For players of the OG, the story will always be compared and the conclusion it's way less powerful
- For new players that did not play the OG (and probably never will), they do not get to experience the powerful story of the original, which is a shame, I was hoping everybody could experience that

Also
the ending is quite confusing. You have this arbiter of faith, with very little backstory, what does he do, and why is he so easily beaten? Surely there's no enemy more powerful than this. What happens after that is not really clear to me, the whole scene with Zack is confusion, and not in a good mysterieus way

Quick protip against that weird enemy with super high defense and takes forever to kill: spam out Tifa's chi strike to stunlock it.

Oh man that's a tough one to boil down for each, but the cool things I like are the character designs, the materia system, and some aspects of the battle system. The most annoying is basically all the padded sections they added in between the original story segments that I've seen so far.

The horrible stories for the side quests and the completely wonky difficulty spikes where it's all trial-and-error frustrates me a lot. You end up having to go into a fight, use assess, find out that you're completely set up wrong, back out, re-outfit the characters, go back into the fight, and then when it's done try to remember how you had everyone outfitted before you had to shake it up for the one annoying fight.

I really like the game...but this combat.

Anyone else feel like they are just kiting mobs around until the ABT bar fills up and i can heal or use an item.

Am i missing something?

Combat seems very underwhelming, (really like the rest however)

finally made it to Wall Market and the Don Corneo stuff. really loving this! the Market is every bit as intricate and magical it should be. the Corneo stuff w the trio and the lady and all these other characters are really cool. the Coliseum stuff rules. all of it is great.

a lot of times something will happen and i will have a hard time remembering if it was in the original game. a lot of new additions to the story feel very in the spirit of the old games. it's very much like the old games in so many ways, but with a very cool new cinematic presentation. the story segments benefit greatly from this, the standard NPC fetch-quest stuff, less so.

at the same time there are some technical shortcomings. the texture work is quite disappointing at times. but that is something they can patch in later. time will only make this game better as they add things. we will probably have 60fps w 4k textures on PS5 through a BC update. this is a very solid game and they could easily do DLC or whatever for it in the interim before Part II.

I guess you could play it that way, or just switch characters more often? You get the kiting effect but it won’t be as boring.

I’m not that far in but only thing that bothered me was the weird auto targeting choosing to shoot at an enemy off screen instead of the one in front of me. I guess I need to use lock on more.

You're taking too much damage while trying to gain ATB then. This game actually gives you alot of room to customize your strategies in gameplay.

Prioritize weapons/armor that give defense and health. Once you get Magnify materia, you can designate one person as a healer and use them to build ATB/heal when necessary, and let the others dish out damage.

For alot of the game, Cloud was my all-rounder + stagger builder (punisher mode is great and Focused Thrust is my favorite stagger ability), Tifa was my big damage dumper (having Rise and Fall up + 2 ATB charges means you're gonna kill pretty much anything that staggers with Tifa. But even Omnistrike itself is extremely powerful), and Barret/Aerith was my ATB builder/healer. They also can dish out some pretty good damage too.

In Hard Mode, i've switched up a bit. I noticed that Barrett also makes a pretty good tank too and his melee weapons do INSANE fucking damage, so i'll switch it up a bit. Also, i was sleeping on Aerith's elemental empowered basic attacks -- they can do an absurd amount of damage if you're using gear that focuses on magic damage.

You probably just need to check out your gear/stats and try face tanking a bit less. You're always gonna take damage, but you shouldn't be wasting all your ATB on it unless the fight is particularly hard.

Nope. This is one of the better combat systems I've played in a long time, in my opinion. It makes you think long and hard about your gear loadout as well as forces you to make lots of meaningful decisions. Deep system with lots of variety.

Don't kite the mobs. Hit them with your sword. Block, parry, nuke.

Apparently i noobed it up and did not notice you had to move into a new menu to use higher Spell levels.
the higher cure makes a huge difference.

How's your parry/counter game?

If an enemy hits you while you''re transitioning into or out of punisher mode you do a counter attack, or if you block while in punisher mode you do a counter attack.

Doing much better after a gear refresh and a new sword and more parry. The non upgraded material was the biggest issue.
Underground coliseum was very smooth

I don't get this kiting stuff, im basically switching between the 3 characters constantly and using atb as soon as it's available. The combat is so involving that way, I'm having a blast.

I'm 20 hours in at the start of chapter 11 now, Im taking this as slowly as possible.

I never get tired of looking up at the section plates and the central pillar of Midgar in the distance, it just looks unreal, day or night. I never even thought about that visual aspect while considering what this game would be like, but it's such a strong visual and really evokes memories of the original game even when the immediate environment doesn't necessarily, if that makes any sense lol.

I got to Hell House on hard and it's really easy when prepared.

The gimmick would be a good one in a game where you just learn magic and have it all the time, but not in one where you have to equip magic, and certainly not at a point in the game where you don't even have a complete party to spread that magic out on.

i dont know what stuff they can add in midgar as dlc and where they going to insert that..each chapter already connected properly..i doubt they would put stuff outside midgar instead
Things I'd actually want:

-Additional simulator stuff that lets you refight bosses with whatever characters you want and as many (or few) characters as you want

-Dancing minigame for all the songs on the jukebox with other characters playable

Sephiroth and Cloud dancing to the terrible hip-hop Chocobo song? Why not?

The more I play this game, the less I like it.

I totally understand WHY 17 is there, because of Aerith and Red XIII and how it's your only chance to get the whole party doing something together, but it's just way too long and so badly timed given how it's a huge filler dungeon dumped right in the middle of what's supposed to be the big climax.

Sometimes casting a magic attack spell does nothing which is kinda bullshit. Just did the Shiva VR mission and there were a bunch of times where she’s seemingly doing nothing but the spell gets nullified. I understand not to cast when they’re going to attack but it’s just not that clear sometimes.

Haven't had this problem and would need video of it happening to believe it.
My assumption is you miss the character getting interrupted or the attack missing, if it really is a glitch then it seems like a rare one.

But still, a video would clear this up.

I do not get your sentiment. Maybe you need to be more precise. I am a huge fan of the original and think they completely nailed the characters.
I played the OG Midgar section right after finishing the remake and you can clearly see that they build upon the foundation that was being build there. Barrets ethos, camaraderie and anger, clouds attitude and change when meeting Tifa and Aerith, Jessies sorrows about all the casualties being her fault. and so on. They even add a bit of good character background like Aeriths abandonment issues (her father, mother and childhood friends). Tifa might have the biggest change of them all with her being to completely on board with the bombing stuff, but they needed that to contrast Barrets much more eloquent and convincing style. In the original he always says he is a leader, in the remake he clearly is a leader. which makes sense, because in the original you were wondering why people put up with his attitude (that he still has when he is angry, but they also show why people are following him).

I would be interested in more concrete examples from your side, since I have both the remake and the original in good memory. Maybe you just have a different interpretation of the original. Which is fine with a 23 year old game I guess, it leaves a lot of room, while the remake had to make things much more obvious and nuanced.

Personally I think the characters and environments are some of the best things in the game (and the combat), which is why I dont care about any story changes that might come. Just give me these lovely characters and put them in an interesting situation within the world of FF7 and I am happy.
Its not like the original was famous for its plot (alien comes to earth, tries to kill everyone, get killed instead with big sacrifice, alien cells are being implanted into a fetus and said fetus grows up to become angry man child who wants to kill everyone). The reason people love the game is the worlds and the characters that inhabit it. Imho they nailed these aspects which is why I am looking forward to more of it. But you know, its just a personal opinion :)

Just beat the game. A little disappointed because I expected the ending to be really controversial and crazy based off people's spoiler-free reactions. I was looking forward to a twist or something at the end, but there wasn't one. I'm not really sure what OG FF7 fans are upset about to be honest, if it's just the ending they hate. The game heavily implies the direction it's heading the entire time and it plays out accordingly. If you enjoyed the entire game until the ending, I'm convinced you didn't pay any attention to this game's storyline and were simply replaying the old game in your head. However, if you weren't down with the game after Cloud meets Aerith for the first time, I can understand that opinion.

I played the original when I was 10 years old and it blew my mind, I never expected the Remake to do the same but it was pretty good and I'm in for Part 2.

I found a strategy that works pretty well on

Bahamut

Party:

Tifa: Mythril claws, max out materia slots, MP, magic, and lowered attack spell cost.

Barret: Big Bertha, max out materia slots, HP, MP recovery, attack, HP recovery when low

Aerith: Silver Staff, max out materia slots, MP, magic, MP reduction, MP recovery

Use materia to boost everyone's MP as much as possible, also boost magic as much as possible, especially Aerith's.

ATB Assist on Tifa, Chakra on Barret and the rest of the materia can be whatever you want. I also used time + magnify on Barret.

Strategy:

Kite Bahamut between Aerith and Barret.

When the battle begins, start shooting with either Barret or Aerith. When you have Bahamut's attention, switch to the other character and start attacking to build ATB. Keep doing this until you can activate Barret's Lifesaver, and Aerith's familiar. Also cast magnify haste on everyone when you can too.

Whenever Barret has 2 bars and you don't have anything better to do, use Maximum Fury.

Once Aerith has another bar, put down Arcane Ward, then build up to max ATB again. Remember to keep switching back and forth to Barret so that one can shoot while the other has Bahamut's attention.

Once Aerith has 2 bars of ATB, stand in the arcane ward and input 2 firagas. This will make her do 4 in a row. During this time, use Tifa to go in an build ATB. The firagas will interrupt Bahamut so that you can pummel away with Tifa with impunity. This will probably do enough DPS to put Bahamut into pressure state.

If it doesn't pressure Bahamut, wait until he counts down to do that. He seems to be able to be pressured more easily during that time.

Try to synchronize Barret's ATB gain so that when you put bahamut into pressure, you can fire off a focus shot, then overcharge, then 1 bar focus shot. Do as many focus strikes as you can with Tifa.

Now just repeat that pattern using either Aerith or Tifa to fire off 4 firagas in a row within the Arcane Ward while you DPS with the others. Use Barret too if necessary to nuke.

When Bahamut is almost staggered, make sure to build up everyone's ATB to 2 bars., and make sure Tifa is at chi level 3.

Stagger Bahamut, go in with Tifa first and do this combo: True Strike > True Strike > Soul Drain > Soul Drain > Maximum Fury > Rise and Fall > Omnistrike > True Strike > True Strike (You may or may not have generated enough ATB to do those last two True Strikes). This should get the stagger damage multiplier to the high 200s.

If that didn't kill him, repeat the process again.

Nope, the game literally does not tell you what the hell is going on with the time ghosts and people seeing the fucking future until the end, and even then it still doesn't make any sense.

If you enjoyed the entire game until the ending, I'm convinced you didn't pay any attention to this game's storyline and were simply replaying the old game in your head.

Extra bullshit. "If you didn't feel the same way I did about this thing then clearly you didn't pay attention and were only in your own little world, and only how I felt is valid". That is a pile of self-absorbed, arrogant tripe man.

I have yet to deride anyone for enjoying this ending but somehow people who did enjoy it continue to say shit like this about the people who didn't. There is PLENTY to enjoy outside of this ridiculous(imo) subplot that doesn't even matter until the end of the game.

It's okay to not like them, but saying that they are not making any sense is just plain wrong.
There is a segment with Max Dood and the Easy Allies guys where he goes into Detail about the Ghosts. It's absolutely crazy how much detail they've put into that.

If you know that and you go back and play the game again you'll see all this hints they drop throughout the game.

Even with an SSD the loading times suck ass (and yes, this is partially due to the bus available for storage on PS4, Pro or not)

I am playing this on a launch PS4 with no upgrades, and I find the loading times completely fine, I barely even notice them. I think playing SFV so much has conditioned me to expect insanely long load times.

But still, a video would clear this up.

One time she’s moving backwards with 2 ice balls surrounding her and another was after she just finished doing her close range AoE ice bomb. Maybe the ice balls a shield or something, I dunno. My character was never getting hit in those instances. The combat looks very pretty but it certainly has jank moments.

Kalm, Chocobo Farm, and Nibelheim would make sense as DLC. The flashback is an easy interlude between games and Nibelheim is already partially built and will almost certainly be re-used anyway. Chocobo Farm is great platform for all kinds of non-story DLC like racing and mini-games. I could see any one or all of those added as post-game chapters, considering how well the game has done so far.

Kalm also has the traveler from the original so if they intend to do the super bosses again it could make a good hub for a whole slew of "Hunt" type missions a la FFXV.

I never said I enjoyed the ending....I basically said it was predictable because they telegraphed it less than 2 hours in and kept running with it. If you weren't catching the heavy handed clues thrown at you almost every time Aerith and Sephiroth spoke, in conjunction with what the Whispers were doing the entire game......and all the flashbacks/flashforwards to really hammer it home......I don't know what else to say.

I said I was disappointed because I was hoping it didn't play out that way and there would be a twist (there are so many other movies and games that use the same trope FF7R did). If you don't believe me, someone else mentioned the Easy Allies Spoiler podcast where they deep-dive into how blatantly obvious the direction was from the beginning, and how in no way is it a subplot....it is literally the plot the entire time.
