The Last of Us 2 file size confirms it'll be the largest PS4 exclusive yet

The Last of Us 2 will take up at least 100GB on your PS4, as its return to the PSN Storereconfirms the approximate file size for Naughty Dog's sequel, which will also launch on two discs for owners of the game's physical edition
A listing for the game on the PlayStation website, discovered by Push Square, states that players will need "100 GB minimum" free space on their PS4 to install The Last of Us 2 onto the system.

For comparison, the recently released Final Fantasy 7 Remake came in at just over 90GB, as did Red Dead Redemption 2 when it launched back in 2018.

Two discs... remember? Is there any other game with more than two discs on PS4?

Damn, that 825 ssd on the Ps5 (which I assume is the total storage and not how much will actually be available) is going to be full with like 3 or 4 games.

That's at least 10GB of pure wokeness.
50% of the size is just all of the voice acting in multiple languages recorded 5 or so times each.
One using "he/she" one only using "he/him" one only using "she/her" one with "them/their" and one with "xe/xim(?)"

Games should stop growing in size or even become smaller next gen, the excuse this gen it's that there is a lot of repeated data being rewrote just to be closer to other data that needs to be streamed at the same moment.

You've got to store all those feminine muscles somewhere!

Seriously though, I like this 2-disc approach a lot. FF7 Remake does it as well. There's a data disc and a play disc, so it's not one of those situations where 50GB gets installed and you're stuck with 50+GB to download. It means you actually own the game and don't have to rely on the servers still providing you with that download many years from now.

In ffvii I wonder what was installed on the hdd and what is being streamed from the disc. CGIs?
Since Naughty dog does not do cgi as they used to do. I guess it is all textures and dialogue, ost and sound effects, etc.
it would be great if they include behind the scenes content as they used to in uncharted games uc2 particularly i enjoyed all that extra stuff.

The 1TB in the XSX also not 1TB equal storage for the consumer, so the difference won't be munch in the end. You could maybe store 1 big game extra on XSX internal SSD.

WOW.....

I could be wrong, but I don't think anything is ever streamed off the disc? I think the "play disc" is just the disc that has to be in the system in order for the game to pass the security check, like any single disc game would on PS4.

Looking forward to storing the Last of us 2 seven times on the PS5! 😂

I don’t know how much extra space next-gen visuals will consume, but we will get an utterly massive reduction in redundant data thanks to the SSD base design and speed of both systems.

Essentially, some things are duplicated hundreds of times in storage space for quick access with today’s slower hard drives, and with that no longer necessary, a gigantic data savings should be expected.

Well. Depending on the offset from the aforementioned next-gen visuals. That remains to be seen.

Well, MS reserves a "100GB" partition for swapping, as far as I know the PS5 doesn't do this.
Why did I read this as, "Miss has 3 dicks in this game? :|"
As the spiritual successor of Freud I would say that maybe you just figured something about yourself. :messenger_dizzy:.
Probably filled with lot of FMV files instead of realtime cutscenes, same thing they did on PS3. Maybe even in 4K, waste of space.
Who knows.

The PS4 copies all the content to the HDD when you "install", the physical disc is only used as a key for DRM (like your account ID is used as a key for downloaded games).

If that were the case it would not make sense to have a 2nd disc, the data disc would suffice, I believe the gameplay part is loaded to ram from HDD, while the CGIs are played from the Disc. Whichever be the case, the game is really good.

ND stopped using CGIs in PS4, TLOU remastered transitioned from CGIs to Real Time cut scenes. That was the first thing i noticed when playing the remaster.

The discs they are using only hold 50GB, so anything over that goes onto a 2nd data disc, if I'm correct.

I do not remember installing play disc, i installed data disc, and then just inserted the play disc and started playing, you could be right, I did not check if play disc was being installed in the background.

Doubt it. Since UC4, all of their cutscenes are real-time now. Only 1 or 2 cutscenes were pre-rendered.

TLOU:R cutscenes were indeed pre-rendered CG on PS4 just like it was on PS3.

Possibly, I actually never played a multi-disc game on the PS4, all I recall is that it was mentioned that the game package was copied from the blue-ray disc to the HDD before you were able to play.

You are right. They re rendered on a higher resolution.

Gonna be nuts. Definitely over 20 hours for show. Have a feeling a lot of this storage is assets and animations though

Honestly, after us beating it and no MP planned for the time being, I don't see this game having the longevity of the 1st game. It will be a one and done type of game. MP is an important component that has to be included day 1 so that people can smoothly transit from SP to MP. This is 2020.

The 1st game stayed relevant because of how great the SP was

Some people played the MP and enjoyed it but the campaign is mainly what made TLOU special

I swear I heard it said that with SSD's in next gen consoles that file sizes like this should actually go down.
