"Black characters on an animated show should be played by black actors" Jenny Slate exits Big Mouth in latest virtue signaling effort

Never heard of this show but saw this was picking up traction on Twitter. Yes, I know I should stop browsing Twitter, but I can't resist looking at trainwrecks.

Nick Kroll apologizes for his white privilege in hiring a non-black actor for the role:

I suppose we need to cancel Shenmue then... Ryo Hazuki was voiced by a white guy. That fucking piece of racist scum /s
Or what about the entire cast of the (English) Pokemon cast not including any Asian people? I guess they're all racist too.

I get that there's racism out there, but trying to find and label things as such that are not racist just detracts from actual cases of racism.

Or how about Kratos. Sure he's not really any skin colour, but if you had to pick one it'd be closest to white.. but he's voiced by a black guy.

Nobody has any problem with any of these. Why make a fuss now?

So is Phil Lamar cancelled? He's played everything from Jimmy in Pulp Fiction to voicing a time traveling Japanese man in Samurai Jack and an undead magical Romanian Vampire in Metal Gear Solid

Whites in the white lane, blacks in the black lane. Whats old is new again.

I would argue the races are already seperated along along racial lines in the area of neighborhoods and schools.

In diverse states like California, high performing schools in the suburbs are majority White while low performing schools in the innercities are majority black and brown. Needless to say, majority black and brown schools are glorified babysitting institutions, producing barely math and english literate high school graduates.

Home buyers are increasingly choosing neighborhoods based on the surrounding schools, and Whites are choosing to go to White neighborhoods for a better education for the children.

Happens all over the world, even in single race societies. Wealth, poverty, class.

Black people have been historically disadvantaged, no doubt. There comes a time where responsibility needs to be taken to get ahead - however there are forces at play actively preventing this. This is a matter of ideology, not race.

I've included an ad for Jnco jeans. For those too young to remember, these were huge in the mid to late 90's. Observe:

As you can distiinguish, all metrics of aesthetics and utility rate these pants as solidly retarded. People bought them anyway, because stupid people more popular than they were bought them. They lied to each other and said they looked good. Nobody that wore them ever looked good, but they couldn't be convinced otherwise. It's only now, when looking at their old photos, that those people realize just how stupid they were.

I'm looking forward to 2030. We'll hold virtue signalling in the same regard as these pants.

Has someone made a compelling argument for why it's necessary for an animated character's skin color has to match their voice actor? Are these people implying that your skin color impacts the way you speak? Isn't that racist?

I always felt Big Mouth did a good job of touching on woke subjects while maintaining a politically incorrect edge that made it funny and relevant. They done fucked up now

And the thing is, with this BLM thing happening, it will only be getting worse in that regard.

I can't create the wording for them, but you already know what the argument will be. It'll be something about white people being the privileged majority who doesn't need a break in the voice acting industry, so a black person voicing a white character isn't a problem the way that a white person voicing a black character is.

Which voice actor do we hire to do god? Or any spiritual creature for that matter?

Edit: Also, the Simpsons are yellow. Where do we find yellow people to voice them?

I was banned one time on reeee because i said that black people dub white characters too like earl jones voicing darth vader.

This shit is absolutely nuts.

Big Mouth was EXCELLENT for the first two seasons, then it took a heavy nose dive in s3, I couldn't even bring myself to finish it. Really disappointing not sure what happened but it went from rib tickling to a not even being able to elicit a smirk grindfest.

But this is pathetic. Missy has a very distinctive voice and is quite a prominent character and the replacement will be jarring. What is the actual thinking about this? A black person would do a better job? They are taking jobs away from black people? I don't understand, isn't this supposed to be acting? I suppose some will say this is a digital version of blackface.

"We took our privilege for grant". Oh dear. I wish them nothing but failure after that :messenger_tears_of_joy: (now that the show sucks, of course)

We ain't outta here in ten minutes, we won't need no rocket to fly through space
So weird how she only seems to suddenly give a shit about this during the mass cancellation of TV shows.

Didn't care when you got 3 seasons worth of paychecks, though. Wonder if she'll donate those.

My first and only ban I remember from GAF was over this. Voice acting is about voice. Anyone can portray anything, that's the point. And also didn't race not suppose to matter?

Imagine if all of the amazing jobs actors like Laura Bailey did went to some lesser actress because they were, whatever color, or skin tone, or whatever. Same goes for Troy Baker, or Terrence Carson. All of whom voice acted numerous races.

So fucking stupid.

Did no one ask her why or did they just drop to their knees?

Also the line about the mom being Jewish AND white is interesting.

Shouldn't voice acting have less to do with your skin color and more with, you know... the voice? Like, if I were to cast a TV show and I hear a voice that fits perfectly for a character, execs could deny me the right to cast that person because they have the wrong skin color? That seems... very, very stupid imo. Also, Steve Buscemi for Darth Vader's voice in the future, because reasons.

It's interesting to live in a world where supposedly a woman can have the reproductive organs of a man, but a black character cannot have the voice of a white person.

Compelling argument? No, not really. I mean occasionally you'll get a distinctly black voice coming out of a non-black character like Serena Williams on Avatar and some of Lamar's work but 99% of the time it really doesnt matter.
