MS officially discontinues Xbox One X and XB1 all digital

The most confusing aspect is One X was a 4K console. If Lockhart is replacing it, why have people been arguing Lockhart is a 1080p console? People who would have bought a One X for their 4K TV are not going to pay the same for a 1080p machine. This doesn't make sense.

It's not confusing. The Series X replaces the One X. The Series S/Lockhart replaces the One S.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
EVEN WIIU AND PSVITA HAD A GREATER LIFESPAN....
The difference being that the WiiU and PSVita had no true successors. The Switch couldn't play WiiU games, and the Vita was replaced with nothing.

This is more like Microsoft discontinuing the Surface 3 before the Surface 4 hits shelves. Or Apple discontinuing the iPhone 6 before they made the iPhone 7.

Honestly that is fucked up....

A company as wealthy as MS can't show the same support that companies INFINATELY LESS RESOURCEFULL LIKE SONY AND NINTENDO show for their consoles (even the less successful ones)?????????????????????

The growing BC Xbox 360 library was halted back in 2019...and the One X is discontinued at least 3 or 4 months before XSEX's launch?????

EVEN WIIU AND PSVITA HAD A GREATER LIFESPAN....

Why don't you go back and read the other 3 pages of thread. Many people have addressed why this isn't true. If the Xbox S didn't exist and the new consoles didn't put a heavy emphasis on backward compatibility, then maybe you'd have a case. What exactly are customers losing with the cancellation of the X?

Microsoft made it clear early on that they were done with console generations. They can only do that by creating new consoles that support old games and by ensuring that their new games can be played on older consoles for the first couple years.

1. Xbox One S will continue to be manufactored

Correct.

2.MS is still going to support cross gen and have gotten a lot of flack over it.

Yes, and that's fine. As I said in this post yesterday, that's actually "normal" for almost every major video game console in history where a successor system is announced.

The complaints were not about their intent to support the old system, but rather the lack of exclusive "next-generation" games to fully take advantage of the new system's capabilities.

3.Sony is not going to support cross gen. Any future Sony exclusives here forward will not be compatable with PS4.

How do you know? Historically speaking:

  • Sony continued to support PS1 after PS2 was released.
  • Sony continued to support PS2 after PS3 was released.
  • Sony continued to support PSP after PS Vita was released.
  • Sony continued to support PS3 after PS4 was released.

The only major Sony system that Sony unceremoniously phased out was PS Vita, since they decided to exit the portable video game sector without a successor system.

I expect (again, based on historical context) that after PS5 is released, Sony will still release some games for PS4. These will be mostly budget or downloadable games, children's games, or annual sports updates such as MLB The Show. Their big-budget AAA blockbusters are currently go to PS5, because it's "all hands on deck" for next-generation software when launching a new system (as it should be).

4. Sony will probably be discontinueing one of the PS4 skus because sony doesn't want several skus flooding the market.

I agree. Much like Microsoft's current announced strategy, Sony will almost certainly phase out PS4 Pro, and keep the base PS4 on the market as the go-to system for casual and budget-minded gamers.

My point was that there was too much band confusion, especially with their naming conventions. So discontinuing more is a smart move.
Yes, you are right. In particular, I do not think the Xbox One X serves any purpose anymore with Xbox Series X, if everything runs at least as well on XSX as it did on XOX. A specifically high end console for Xbox One games that needs to cost almost as much as the next gen console that can serve this purpose all well, too, is a system without a target demographic.

#SonyToo
This is kind of strange. Maybe they didn’t want too many SKU’s on the market I’m guessing, but why get rid of the nicest, most powerful Xbox? Maybe they didn’t want people getting confused with the new Series S and the XBox One X graphics or something?
Or it could be they produced enough stock to get by and the series s will come in that cheap that the X wouldn’t be appealing to customers anymore

I can't believe that people have turned this into an issue. There's zero point in selling X1X and X1S after both XSX ans XSS launch this year. Lockhart seems to be designed in such a cost effective way that it can directly replace the X1S. So why buy a X1S when you can buy a lockhart? And given that they've stated that most games will be cross-gen for the next several years, existing X1 owners have nothing to worry about with software support.

I expect Sony to sell the PS4 for a while longer, however, it wouldn't surprise me if the they dropped the Pro model next year.

This makes sense, for the long term.

For the short term (and this depends on how they position Lockhart with pricing and capabilities), I can envision at least a temporary three-tier situation:

  • The base Xbox One S serves the low end of the market.
  • The Xbox Series X serves the high end of the market.
  • Lockhart occupies a middle tier, replacing (for now) the Xbox One X.

As time progresses, and the Xbox One S is phased out, Lockhart moves down into its place as the entry-level system.

I think the crown goes to the PS3 60GB version.

🤡
Did that need software written specifically for it? That would also be wrong if you're talking about something being changed in an SKU.

Who is going to bother with Xbox One X enhanced games now when they weren't even bothering before it was discontinued?

With BC and Game Pass eventually offering next gen only games, selling the consoles that will not run those games in two years when there will be a sku that does at the same price would be anti-consumer. This is needed. This isn't a PS2 situation.

This is like PS3 about to come out for the same price with full PS2 backwards compatibility. Does it make sense now?

Who is their right mind would have bought a Xbox one x anyway in these last year? An allmost two year game drought plus series x around the corner made this thing a though sell. Plus, it isn't a ps4

Well, considering that MS said their 1st party titles will be available on current gen hardware 1-2 years after SERIES X launch, I'd say it's an even bleaker outlook for PS4.

But the PS4 can have its viking funeral having had it's fair share of great exclusives, the One X never really lived upto its original promise, I can only really think of Forza and Gears that had substantial One X work put in, and now they've discontinued the system before Halo even released, which is the game they demoed when first announcing it. just seems short sighted.

Sure they had the most powerful console!!! for a short while, but didn't really do anything meaningful with it and now third party support will start drying up, and it's no longer going to be the best console for first party.

It wasn't a cheap console either so feel bad for folks who picked it up for the long haul

WTF. Was going to pick one up before Series X launches.

Oh well, onto Lockhart then.

I don't see Sony dropping the Pro model. I actually see them dropping base PS4 and Pro becoming the new base model (with a drop in price of course).

Huge mistake. Can't have a family of consoles when you're killing off the elderly. PS2 sold 150 million, but it was also manufactured for 13 years.

But the ecosystem essentially died with the console, as back compat for ps2 was dead in a couple of years anyway. And there was no back compat at all for Sony this time around. It looks like MS is continuing to try and move forward to a phone model here, I love my XboneX but likely they won't be able to cut the costs on it enough to make it viable in the market against the vastly more powerful Series X, and since the SeX will play all the last gen games, but better it's easier to push people towards next gen while not making it seem like a forced update. Course it could blow up in their face, I just hope it doesn't as there isn't a company I love more than Sony when it has to put up an honest fight, and no company I hate more than Sony when they run shit unopposed.

I got 2 of them and they're hands down the best consoles ever made. One is the recently released CP2077 edition a thing of beauty wich sold 45K in a day because it was sold out everywhere the day after. Just look at that controller.

Lockhart is rumored to be a 1080p-1440p console RDNA 2 GPU-significantly more capable than GCN GPU,and capable of ray tracing-hardware ray tracing,60 fps-Zen 2 CPU,faster loading-SSD

Lockhart should easily run those same XB1X games at 4k. Its next gen games that Lockhart will run games at 1080p-1440p as next gen games are significantly more demanding in all aspects.

XB1X will not even be capable of running next gen only games. So that 4k tv won't see any new next gen gaming action via XB1X anyhow. Anybody who owns a XB1X won't be able to play next gen only games at all.

So it's a moot point.

What? MS is planning to support Xbox One with next gen exclusives for 2 years so of course the Xbox One X can run those games. From the rumours, Series S is 4TF, which iirc is about 6TF GCN, so the same theoretical computational power as the discontinued One X but with faster CPU and RAM (and SSD). So you are wrong about it's GPU being 'significantly' more capable going off the rumours.

We don't believe you should have to upgrade to a new console to play the latest games......

Opps, we're sold out of all the old consoles....you can still buy the new console to play the latest games

QyJT6qt.png
discontinuing the two least selling Models isn’t the same as forcing you to upgrade to the next system. The xbox one s still exists and is still being supported.

They need to make more Xsexs, would be counterproducrive to be assembling all the versions.
Besides, new xonsole will be compatible with all the games so I don't see why this would ever be a problem

Just the all digital? Makes me laugh, they shouldn't even exist to begin with. Disc drive consoles allow both options so why play into any chance of an all digital future by flooding the market in return?

RIP to the only true next gen console that was smart enough to include a 4k drive.
But needed to be done. We don’t need 12 skus
What good does a 4k Blu Ray drive do? It's a video game console.

Where was that thread with the bet that guy did where he said there was no Lockhart? Has he been shamed yet ?

Excuse my quick and dirty photoshop
Just occurred to me this is a pretty smart move to remove the one x from stores when the series x launches.

you can’t be confused what’s different between the one x and series x when the one x isn’t even available.

Ha, this is pretty transparent. All this cross gen BS is because they are afraid of losing their gamepass userbase. Hence no next gen games for the next 2 years, really insane move but with their relatively low installed base, I don't blame them, they have to keep their only win.

Wow, XBONEX launched in November 2017, that was almost 2018. XBOX SAD released in May of 2019. There was so much hype generated by MS and it's fans for both consoles and they are done so early?.......Well tbf, OG XBOX folded after 4 years, 360 tapered out around 2009 when they were mostly shooting Kinect releases and now the two most recent XBONE systems are biting the dust. If this is one thing history tells us about MS is that their hardware platforms don't have the longevity other consoles do, support for their consoles comes way too soon and end quite abrubtly....

Its an entertainment device, it was billed as that for awhile. People still like to buy discs, i bet you were excited when the ps3 had blu ray

it would make no sense to sell both Lockhart and One X side by side. so this was a long time coming.

so they basically place the One S as the super low cost entry system, the Lockhart as the "next gen" entry system and the Series X as the enthusiast Next gen system

Seems that support will continue until the end of 2022. Support for PS4 ends this Holiday with gamers unable to play the Spiderman DLC unless they buy a $500 upgrade.

Well, remember if the parents screw up not getting their kid an Xbox One Series X and instead an Xbox One S they would still be able to play the games, remember none of the games would be exclusive for the console for 1-2 years was it.
And any kid asking for the latest console gift from their mom won't notice and care for the graphics anyways.

How does discontinuing the One X achieve that when the vast majority of those people will already have an Xbox One X anyway?

What they are doing vs what they are saying regarding this are two entirely different things. If they were really concerned about people having the most options possible then they wouldn't discontinue this console a little over 2 years after releasing it.

Because it will only get costlier for MS to continue manufacturing technologies on those older processes. Why? Firstly because AMD are no longer on 28nm processes that the XBO family APUs are manufactured on. Also, costs for GDDR5 memory increase since it's being phased out.

Yes MS could migrate that functionality to newer processes and re-engineer the systems to consolidate the tech into a smaller form factor that's also more price-efficient to manufacture...but they're already kind of doing that with the Series S. Did you forget it's backwards-compatible with Xbox One titles?

So really it's concern over nothing; anyone who wanted an XBO or even an X by now, would have purchased them. If they still want one console manufacturers tend to produce enough units ahead of time to put out in the supply chain up to a point, MS aren't idiots so I'd suspect they've done this as well.

What I find also interesting here is that all of the factors of costs consolidation affect Sony and PS4 as well; the fact they've just come out and said PS5 production numbers are increasing to 10 million, probably might signal they're scaling down PS4 production as well, or even cutting that down altogether. After all they're the ones who have been more adamant on transitioning people quickly between generations.

Yet where is the same concern there? Why is it scaling down production of the older systems seen only as bad when Microsoft does it, when the latest news in PS5 production increases (plus knowing that system will also be backwards-compatible with at least a big chunk of PS4 games) would indicate to most people they are probably also scaling down or ending production of their current-gen system too?

And especially knowing MS is positioning Series S as the XBO/One X replacement and, again, it's backwards-compatible with all XBO games, and all of the concern (or in some cases, "concern") is honestly worth absolutely nothing.

Shortest lived console in recent memories haha

THIS is why i am done with xbox.

There is just no guarantee that microsoft supports their product long therm.

Look at sony and ps4. Since release its still going strong and receives plenty of first party support.

Look at xbox one with kinect. Gone
Look at xbox 1s . Gone
Look at xboxsad . Gone
Look at xbox one x. Gone

The 360 was going strong even a year after the xboxone came out.

I can only hope microsoft for once will stick to their console and support it for many years.

But yeah this is not something i want to invest in anymore

Let's be honest here; you were just fishing for an excuse and came across one. Because this is a pretty ridiculous reason to drop out of an ecosystem.

NOBODY honestly cared about Kinect and MS forcing it with XBO was not only one of the reasons that system had an image problem early on, but also contributed to its lower-than-expected specs in certain areas since Kinect ate up a good deal of the BOM (not to mention focus away from core gaming). When they removed Kinect from XBO, nearly everyone celebrated.

You're acting like One S, One SAD and One X are being removed and not only is there no replacement (there is: Series S), but they're not supporting them with 1st-party content either (they are; they literally just said that today were you asleep or something?).

So not a single one of your "concerns" are valid. It's like I said earlier this reads like you were fishing for an excuse to leave and strung together a flimsy reason to do so. I'm almost shocked at the ignorance here. It's worst with the bad faith folks who would've tried finding a way to say MS were doing bad if they out of nowhere announced they were doing no cross-gen support for XBO. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

The funniest part is that you're probably considering hopping over to Sony, yet they have literally stated they are done with 1st party support on PS4 after this year. Ghosts of Tsushima is their final massive PS4 1st party game, anything else after this will be small stuff. So they're the ones hopping off current-gen extremely early, yet somehow MS has messed up ending manufacture of One S and One X even though they have Series S to replace them and it'll be backwards-compatible with XBO titles, and they're still supporting XBO with cross-gen games for a decent bit unlike Sony with PS4.

Yeah...you people are basically drinking dumborade and functioning in autopilot mode. A sad day for the forum.
