Time for Sony to bring back a first party shooter.

Too much competition, we are actually full of shooters already.
As much as I would like Socom it would compete with CSGO and Valorant.

They didn't even bother with a Killzone Collection or Resistance Collection for the PS4 to get some new fans into these series.

If they are going to make another SOCOM it should be first person, unless they come up with a solution for TPP corner peaking, where only what you character can see gets rendered.

Sony is playing it very safe these days (like almost all major publishers), I would expect them to invest into another third person cinematic action adventure before a shooter. Sony has found their golden goose and it seems like they don't wanna let go of it.

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Reasonable revival and it’s great seeing believers in exclusive SONY shooters but they’ll go their own route, those games are fake compared to Halo’s success bro

If this was 3-4 years ago, MAG would have been perfect. But Call of Duty now has that locked up with BR mode. I know that's not the same as MAG with respawns, but if Sony was going to make a shooter that would have been perfect timing.

MAG was something else, in a good way, but just before it's time.

I agree that Sony needs something fresh in their line up from an FPS viewpoint. Resistance would be my pick.

As long as it's not from Guerilla Games or Insomniac. They're both making much better games now than the FPS games they made.

As Bryank said, sci-fi games don't really resonate with gamers anymore.

Shooter fans seem to skew to modern military (Call of Duty/BF) or crazy Fortnite/Hero based shooter.

That middle ground of a bit of both is a tough sell.

If Sony made a new MAG with lots of objective modes that fit 64 or 128 person giant maps it could work. It would be like BF but on steroids. And then add some BR modes and you got a total package game.

I don't think MAG was ahead of it's time, I actually think it was behind the times.

256 players in one match (admittedly cool), but the player only interacted in 10 v 10 type scenarios. The game was so afraid of boring the player that it constantly threw enemies in your face. It essentially played like an inferior COD, which had superior graphics and controls. The high player count was a relative waste.

In a way, it was the anti Battle Royale. A genre that doesn't care if you see an enemy for 5-10 minutes, because it gives the player meaningful context for each engagement. MAG never really did that.

With everything going free to play and Sony needing reasons to make people pay for Plus I could see them investing in a new IP. I’d almost argue they need a new and exclusive FPS for PS5.

I wouldn’t count on Halo being amazing at launch, but I’m sure it will eventually be a good game and Sony doesn’t have anything FPS wise this holiday, outside of the usual suspects you can play anywhere, to give people a reason over Xbox. Here in the U.S. people do still love the shooters.

no, because sony already tried, you cant compete with call of duty nor battlefield

- Socom
-syphon filter

2 sleepers that can easily change MP for sony if done right, with fps your only trying to compete or copy n paste whats already done.

Socom has the best potential for breaking new ground, I think they need to do away with 3PS though... I think guerilla have moved on from the Killzone franchise, they said something alluding to that in a Horizon Zero Dawn docu i watched, or something

Isn't Guerilla's 2nd team working on a multiplayer shooter? The dude from Rainbow 6 Siege is heading the project.

It needs to be a new IP. Killzone is dead in the water

What time is it?
I was going to poo poo this idea as Resistance was never good and Killzone only has one good entry, but I wouldn't mind a SOCOM or Warhawk remake.

Just as long as it doesn’t have stylish cartoon graphics or a post apocalyptic type setting then I’m down.

I think Sony Is best at avoiding the genres everyone else is doing and probably will do better than them.

Most publishers won't touch a single player focused game without microtransactions and that's what Sony is the best at.

I think it's just a theory at this point. Could be a 2nd project or it could be Forbidden Wests multiplayer mode.

A more narrative based FPS would suit Sony. An in house equivalent to Bioshock.
This is a great take! I personally would love to see an adaptation of a modern conflict account like House to House, Black Hawk Down, Lone Survivor, 13 Hours, Lions of Kandahar, etc. Something that really grounds the player and the experience in the suffering endured by all sides in the conflict. COD/BF make war seem like an action movie, this would be a pallet cleanser.

I loved Resistance (it's what ultimately got me into first person games - I would avoid them without question before). Anyway, I didn't like the changes they made to the second one (made it more like COD) but they fixed that with the third. Bring Resistance back!!

MAGs problem was launching too early. I liked it but it really needed to be a PC game if it launched the year it did.

Sony seems to be more interested in 3rd person action RPGs, and it seems to be working so I doubt they change

Would I like to see one? Sure, if it comes from the right studio and given enough time in the cooker. Is it necessary? No. Is it happening? More than likely not....

Playstation has plenty of third-person shooters however. Good ones at that. Returnal being another coming in hot. When you have games like Halo barely making a blip in the radar, and not a positive blip at that you know how saturated the market really is.
