Ok...

Had an interesting conversation with a pal of mine yesterday. He's a Jehovah's Witness, so our friendship can only be so close. But, we talk for a few hours each week, usually about our families, games, movies, music. He's the only guy I have a personal relationship with at work.

I bring up he's a JW because he rarely gets political. He doesn't vote or follow much about the "world". Yesterday he brought up "Black Lives Matter" and it naturally, I feel, came around to George Floyd. He had very strong positive feelings about the movement. He believes Floyd was murdered and the riots are white people messing with the movement. He told me he didn't watch the video of Floyd's arrest and it wouldn't change his mind if he had. It was very eye opening to me. It was also a bit unnerving. We talked a bit about inequality and how black people are at a disadvantage when it comes to success.

One example was whether Jimi Hendrix had to work harder to be successful than someone born into wealth who's parent's could afford the best teachers and mentors. I argued that because of Hendrix's natural in-born ability, he would find it easier than someone who was less talented but had to train harder. Reflecting on it, I see where I may have been wrong. In my mind, someone talented and driven is sure to find success, skin color doesn't matter.

It did matter. Hendrix found discrimination and prejudice in his homeland. He did most of his recording overseas.

I can think we as a society have progressed and nobody has to deal with that kind of stuff, then I see the word "troon" on this message board. Maybe we still have further to go.

Hendrix ironically had almost exclusively white fans; black people didn't start coming around to him in numbers until the last decade or so. He also stood out a lot more because of his race. There have been many extremely talented guitarists who haven't achieved the level of fame that Hendrix has had. Burning out and dying young also raised his fame, as well.

What's a troon? Is it the same as saying tranny, or does it have some other deeper insult? I thought it was used to call someone ugly.

Jimi Hendrix was just an example. And it was more about how hard he had to work than his level of fame. I think I may have been a little to naive in my thinking.

I grew up thinking and hearing the word “troon” used to describe someone of mixed race. In the context of how it was written, I assumed that was how it was meant. Words change over time, so it may mean something I don’t know.

Troon is a derogatory word for trans used on the internet.

he doesn't vote or follow much about the world but brings up blm with positive feelings and echoes how white people are messing w / the movement ...

talks about inequality (inequity) but black people are inherently disadvantaged to success ...

dude sounds off his rocker, hendrix rose to the top through sheer fucking will w / his own community against him in many cases

greatest rock guitarist of all time tho, i would say

Would you believe that there are retro collectors still warring over Genesis vs. SNES?

It was an unexpected surprise talking such things with him. I told him as we were leaving that it was a good thing he wasn’t political because he was a huge lefty.
As far as his religion is concerned, we maneuver around the subject now as we know we disagree on a fundamental level.

His religion is incompatible with BLM.

nothing wrong with that to the point where it becomes deceptive

rather people be up front and honest about what they believe than veil everything in shadows

maneuvering around the subject is tricky, i run into that wall with plenty of folk when discussing things like free will and usually let up the gas before someone gets their spirit wrecked

for up to the point where a true crystal ball is created with high levels of precision and accuracy via quantum supremacy pathways

we'll never be god and uncertainty will always remain (meaning choice)

Let's get meta...

Color is not a quality of an object. Color is a perception. Much the same as time and gravity....

Choice and "free will" are also perceptions.

Why is it in the book of "Genesis" in the Bible the creation of man story is told twice?

i think it's there to best describe initial conditions by the creator

def agree it's landlocked to perception and illusion since objects are forbidden to have relative velocities greater than the light speed

Halo on Legendary is still the sublime experience I remember it to be. Halo 2, though... wtf why is Legendary nearly impossible on this game? How much does co-op help? Like, it feels like I never know my shield has been taken down so deaths always seem to come out of nowhere, you definitely die in less shots than in Halo 1, there's like no denying it. Halo 1 wasn't some slouch for difficulty, those elites were grenade dodging assholes, I still recall how weird it was to me to play a game with a dedicated grenade button and how quickly I realized the importance of grenades to the combat experience. I was so used to grenades being like the 8 key on a keyboard or some shit and that was to pull them out because they were treated like any other weapon, so I rarely used them. Halo was like "what if you could throw grenades at will and pretty much had to?" Which was really neat.

Here's me returning, I started recording at this staircase after death 3 remembering "ah yes... this staircase is where the men are separated from the boys on Legendary difficulty" and yes, I'm playing with the old graphics, I'm tempted to tell people it's a case of soul vs soulless when it comes to these new graphics but I GET IT if you don't have nostalgia...

Halo 2 just isn't designed as well. It's the only game I would never replay on legendary, because it just isn't fun like that. The one-hit snipers alone...

Lmao at the staircase, though. I was surprised a few months ago to find out that it was still a nightmare after 20 years. I don't think it's even possible to get through it without some amount of cheese.

I also completely agree on the art style. I did the 343 version once, and I'll never go back again. It was okay, other than completely ruining the intro of the Flood, and it was cool to see it with (sort of modern) tech. It's just that Bungie's version is so much more artistically interesting, that it actually kind of affects enjoyment of the game itself. Things look so much more mysterious, ancient, cool, or better fit whatever tone the mission is going for.
