Xbox Series S - Revealed Trailer

I forget where it was said, but they did say an external HD can be used to play back compat games off of directly, or store Series X games in bulk storage.
correct, also this:
iu

20 CUs... if that's true then that's 55% ps5's CUs, for 50% the resolution target.
clockspeed and bandwidth are unknowns.

How would he even know that it cant lol, you guys severely overestimate most peoples technological knowledge

If he has a 4k tv it would still upscale, so he would never find out unless someone told him

This position would have a lot more validity if TVs hadn’t been sold on 4k & 8k for years.

512gb SSd, too small for digital only 😬

Suppose I can put games on the external card and just plug them in different systems.

im pretty sure that next gen consoles with disc drives need to install the game anyways.

Exactly. And even if you tell him he'll fight you all the way because it says "4K" on the box. Already happened this gen with X1X & PS4 Pro. People would rather believe the marketing than know the truth, and they'll rationalise it however best they can.

Yeah I just hope the interface is good, something better then digging into menus and manually transfer things. Something more surface level (ie like how u can trigger updates on PS4 games from the game icon).

Neat, I might get this to play OG xbox games.

DirectX Raytracing
VRS
VRR
512GB SSD (Meh)

The SSD size is very disappointing. But I hope games will become smaller next gen.
They are selling you a decent last gen console at 300 bucks. 512GB is fine.

discless? EH

This is a pretty wild value proposition for a next gen 1440p box. Hitting that pricepoint in a post-Covid (or still Covid, who knows?) market will be a tremendous advantage.

So, just to get it straight; what we have now is Series S is priced correctly at $299, but because of that it is MUCH weaker than what fans wish for.

So basically those "not going to hold back Series X" crowd have nothing left to deny. If anyone want to launch games on Series X they will also have to run it on a much weaker machine. Thus, everything we said about Series S came true.

Now we wait for PS5's price announcement, and we can finally be off to the races. I have a suspicion of what the outcome would be, but I think i said everything I needed to say, months ago. Back when Series S was originally leaked. I thought it was a stupid idea back then, and I still think it is a stupid idea now.

A reminder that only 2% of Steam gamers play in 4K.

This is going to butcher the Series X sales.

Sorry, but what is Microsoft thinking? This means that even next gen games must still run on series S and therefore Series X will be forever being held back and never reach it's full potential.
Games will run like the og xbox one did vs how they ran on the x. Seems acceptable.

digital only might kill the sales though.

Since I'm a multiplatform gamer with priorities of playing all multiplatform games on PC( including MS games)this console intrigues me for the odd B/C title from the XBox or 360 that can't be played anywhere else. If MS improves the experience of backwards compatibility, and gives us even more games from the XBox and 360 era then I'm sold on this.
Haven't they already said every game will be there from OG xbox and 360?

I know it wouldn't happen, but external optical drive accessory would make it a perfect candidate for me.

I want to see what next-gen games look like running on this thing. Cheap is fine, poor performance (relatively) is not.

Tflops wise, it should be able to handle 1080p (25% of the 4k pixels) better than bigger brother handles 4k, and handle 1440p (44% of the 4k pixels) quite acceptably.

PS5 + PC (GP) + Switch is the solution for next gen.
In that order
Obviously, but PC is not in this price range, PC which could run games as the console I mean. And as my browsing through the internet taught me, people are not really use to using PC. Here you start with PC....

I'm shocked by 1440p. When your TV upscale this it will look phenomenal. MS finally brings a common sense SKU scheme to the console space that targets the price-sensitive consumers. This puts in line with every other CE product on the planet. Anyone who is looking at a PS4 Pro or PS4 will get this instead.

This will sell gangbusters. And don't get me started on Xbox All Access.

At a much lower resolution. XSS will be 1080p-1440p (but probably 1080p most of the time), while XSX will be targeting 4k, or close to it.
XSS at 1080p is actually a slightly more capable machine than XSX at 4k.

I think that DF video on 4tflop machine shows that 1440p is going to be very viable for a few years at least, this is more powerful than Pro. Then 1080p when next gen games ramp up, if the scaling system is good then all the better.
By that point DirectML may make resolution a moot point.

Seems like a nice little gamepass machine. Looks ugly as sin though. What happened to the team that designed the Xbox 360?

Less than half a terabyte of storage in this day and age seems insane.

I also cannot imagine this thing won't either be unavailabley hobbling to next gen game development, or necessitate the creation of embarrassingly shoddy ports.

We'll have to wait and see obviously, but this just feels like a continuation of MS's behaviour this gen, of putting the goal of making money by any means possible over that of making good games.
I think a Surface Pro with a 128 GB HDD is insane, but they sell.

Its all about price to some people.

Who is this for? For someone who doesn't have the budget to purchase/build a gaming PC, someone who doesn't care much about graphics but still wants instant access to the latest games via streaming/digital within quality ecosystem/online multiplayer experience. It should have been $199 and SxS should have been $399. Regardless, I will most likely purchase 2 of these for my 2 nephews and force them to play with me the games i am good at and ruin their experiences, Roblox! /s

Every XBox One game will be B/C, plus every OG XBox and 360 game that's been released thus far will be available. Not every OG XBox or 360 game has been promised, because the team behind XBox B/C has to do extra work to ensure games from the OG XBox and 360 run without issue before releasing to the public.

As you can imagine though, that will take some time to go through different games and to do the work needed to make each game B/C. Not every game will make it due to either licensing issues, programming issues or time restraints. I am hopeful that some of the older Sega games from OG XBox make a return though as I want to see games like JSRF and Crazy Taxi 3 running on the series S and X.

So it's real.
Honestly can't believe that's how it looks. The black circle looks awful. Why not just make it all white to contrast the all black Series X?
That fan-made white Series S cube
render looks far superior.

I guess that some people will buy it but it's really a pointless device and bad deal.

It's not really next-gen, it's still 300$, it doesn't play any exclusive game that it's not playable on XB1 yet and it won't for MS knows how long.

Just wait and buy XSX in 1-2 years or save your money.

XSS at 1080p is actually a slightly more capable machine than XSX at 4k.

RT performance aside (tied to CU count and clockspeed and cannot guarantee to just scale down with screen resolution), less free RAM for games than XOX (10 GB minus OS reserves vs 12 GB minus OS reserves), lower amount of ROPS (this is possibly not going to have 4 shader arrays, 2 are more likely... so only 1 Shader Engine see diagram below... but I hope it has few DCU’s per Shader Array and this two full Shader Engines with two Shader Arrays each more similar to the diagram below), less Rasterizer units, less Primitive processing units, and possibly less ACE’s... all if you imagine only two shader arrays instead of four:

Thread is about XBOX though, if many of you haven't noticed...!
It is about Xbox. It's not about talking complete arse

As a side note, i've seen the Switch Pro on 4chan. It's $99 and comes with a 4k oled screen and runs at 9tf RDNA 3. Sweet eh?

On Topic:

What would happen is Sony dropped the price of the OG PS4 to $99 and the Pro to $149?

This is a stupid argument that has been debunked multiple times.
Not debunked at all, since Halo Infinite was clearly an Xbox One game and not "built from the ground up to take advantage of Serie X". And if Halo Infinite is being held back, then the same will happen to other titles.

I like the Series X and PS5 design but this S Design looks like shit.

The big black disk looks like a speaker, if it was white it would be much cleaner.

MS Killed it with the price though. Can see this being VERY popular over the holidays for households with kids.

  • 4TF RDNA 2 GPU
  • Same CPU as Xbox Series X
  • Nearly 60% smaller than Xbox Series X
  • Custom 512GB NVME SSD powered by Xbox Velocity Architecture (like the Series X)
  • 1440p at up to 120FPS
  • DirectX Raytracing
  • 4K upscaling and media playback
  • Variable rate shading
  • Variable refresh rate
  • Ultra-low latency

No one is saying XB1 wont hold back XSX. Plus we dont even know how Halo runs on the XB1, it could be 720p/30 for all we know.
