But to the point, I for one, am really happy we got to that point where some games can really look like Pixar CGI movies, and this happened not only in my lifetime but also when I'm young! I can not fathom what PS6 or PS7 can achieve.

I was a former full time 3D artist myself and worked on a few games (AA and low profile stuff). I have friends and colleagues in the industry, i have never met anybody working within the industry as delusional or fanatical as him (well maybe a very few QA people). Also at the same time I'm not going to ask myself to be vetted just for a fancy tag so i can stroke my ego online because i dont care. I've already had discussions with him regarding the 3D pipeline, well he never responded to certain stuff so i knew he was full of shit. Maybe he is who he is but i would sure hate to work with someone like that.:messenger_weary::messenger_ok:
The guy was just here to fulfill some sort of power fantasy where he could spout opinion as fact and not be questioned, wielding his vfx experience as "proof" that he couldn't possibly be biased. In truth he's been dragging around the worst one in professionals: blind spot bias

Playstation has lost many people on the marketing department and it shows. When your marketing strategy is "people will quickly forget how bad we did it to this point when we finally show something impressive" instead of creating a slow but steady build up that reaches its highest point just before for the launch of your product, you know you're failing.

And no, a slow but steady build up shouldn't include aknowledging the existence of your next gen console with a Wired article, waiting 5 months to dive into the specs with a GDC talk with fake audience on screen, then waiting 3 months to reveal the console form factor and some games and then waiting another 3 months (and counting) to talk about the rest of relevant info like the price, release date, launch lineup, UI, etc.
Neither is Sony.

You guys are a bit delusional. You see the goal isn’t to make people NOT talk about Xbox, nor is the goal to paint the PS5 as an alternative to Xbox.

The point is to make people talk about PS5, and to paint PS5 as the only console you want, as if it’s the only option.

See it’s the other guys job to offer an alternative to PS5, because that’s what they are atm. That’s what the market says they are.

The success of a marketing campaign is judged on engagement, where the PS5 is destroying by all metrics available, and finally on how successful the launch is.

Exactly, but I think the competitive pricing/launch against MS has had more to do with impacting Sony's plans than COVID. The PS teams were equipped to deal with remote collaboration and I doubt their marketing plans have changed drastically given the Wired announcements last year and plans to skip E3.

It's also much more likely third-parties publishers and their partner agreements were impacted and affected their launch timelines. I know companies like Ubisoft had major furloughs and layoffs, and that would impact things like demos, trailers, etc. when the priority is ensuring games launch on schedule.

Again, I could be totally wrong and Sony could fumble the bag with their blowout, but I don't see that happening. This whole debate will look silly in a few weeks.

Excellent point on third parties. Video game campaigns are always a moveable feast at the best of times I’d imagine, with that many collaborators, partners and stakeholders. Covid would have only made things worse.

Anyone claiming they could have done better than either Sony or Microsoft is a fatuous idiot, who’s never had to work in a marketing or comms department in their lives.

Says PS5 has HDMI port and will be coming out this year. Will update with more if they send more info.

I'm glad you asked because I would do exactly the opposite Sony did.

1) Aknowledging the existence of the PS5 with a surprise video published all around social media. Ideally around december 2019 playing with the 25th Playstation anniversary, recaping the history of the brand and ending with the PS5 logo and a text saying "Coming 2020". People go crazy.

2) Now it's time for interviews on gaming and tech outlets highlighting the SSD. For the next two months Mark Cerny, Jim Ryan and Hermen Hulst talk about the future of Playstation in separate interviews, podcasts and such.

3) In march you do the Mark Cerny GDC talk. Due to pandemic it's a recorded video but no fake conference bullshit. Straight video presentation with Mark Cerny talking to camera and lots of graphics and visual aid.

4) In april you reveal the DualSense, but planned, not because it's about to leak. Highlight de haptics and new functionalities.

5) Leave May PS5 free to concentrate on one of your last PS4 exclusives. TLOU2 is one month away.

6) In June you make the Future of gaming show when you reveal the PS5 form factor and some games. It was actually quite good. I wouldn't have changed too much except don't show the Digital Edition yet.

7) In July you make the final marketing push for Ghost of Tsushima.

8) In August you reveal the second sku, the PS5 Digital Edition, and hint it will be cheaper than the standard version. And while you're at it show the UI of the system.

9) In september you broadcast the final big event, showing gameplay of Miles Morales, Forbidden West and Demon's Souls and trailers for first party unannounced games and third party. News about PS+ and Ps Now if there are any. End the show revealing price and release date. Preorders open. Call it a day.

10) In October you publish a complete teardown of the PS5 while the hype ramps up for launch. Maybe explain in detail how can you get one, how the memory expansions and backwards compatibility are going to work.

11) November you unleash the PS5 into the world.

That’s a good, albeit academic, media plan.

The reality though, is that the current conversation surrounding the PS5 is plain incredible. Even more when Microsoft communicates.

Instead of dreaming about how we would do it, it might be sound to look at the measurable proofs that this will be a successful launch, whether we like the way it’s handled or not.

I’m the first to find Sony lazy.

But there is simply no incentive to market this differently at this stage.

Reading your points while the dates are a little different I would not say its the complete opposite and very much still comparable to what Sony did do. Also the first gaming event you descriped would be worse than what we got from them in june. How many of the games would you have shown? All of them, like they did?

Sony is just holding a lot of things back to reveal closer to launch. While I get why people could get frustrated, when it actually happens those same people will forget the wait and enjoy whats presented.

Considering how huge every piece of PS5 has been, it’s clear you are out of your depth. You don’t understand the brand or the culture around it.

With all these memes floating around from big name companies and xbox official twitter responding and retweeting. You can’t deny that this was an intentional leak. All these retweets are just one big viral marketing scheme.
Sony IMO should definitely not take the bait by announcing their price this week. That move would garner a lot of attention even from press outside of gaming. And in effect, highlights Xbox as well. Free marketing just by being the competition. Sony should let the xbox news die down for a while.
Yep, Sony has deliberately never directly adressed anything MS has done, while MS is desperately trying to piggyback Sony.
Sony simply does not want to share the spotlight with them. Its a smart move.
If Sony shared the price and release date back in June what would have changed for you?

Most of their leadership, and especially on the marketing side, have been around since the PS3 days or earlier, and just because you’re not a fan of their strategy so far doesn’t mean it’s inherently bad.

If Sony announces a blowout next week and has a steady stream of announcements and info through launch, that’s much more valuable for mindshare than blowing their load in March and regurgitating the same info for months.

Guys, Guys apparently Sony doing a shit job marketing. Internet guys with no product exp know better. When Sony do a solo show just focus on themselves & market their product alone its such a bad job look at the numbers. Its shambles this roll out, Absolute shambles.They don't know what they are doing.

And in fact press junket things mostly come with time sensitive stuff as content but doesn't bar you from mentioning getting one, so all in all I would say we are really REALLY close to getting the announcement for the next event, like a day or two at the most.

Yep, it's amazing but I can't accept the idea of the 3 types of Ray Tracing in this game.

BUT MY EYES are telling me: Shadows RT, Reflections RT and Global Illuminattion too.
But man to think about it is so crazy, the game is already gorgeous and would have this level of Ray Tracing with 4K ???????
The idea can't go in my head, it's too incredible.
But if this is true. No man on Earth have moral to speak about PS5 Power and Tflops after this crazy achievement.

Okay so if we go by the same logic some people have, XSX is the best console to play multiplats based on specs alone, right? so by that logic the XSS is the worst console to play multiplats?

That's basically understood, yes. Technically, the X1 held that position for the entire gen and they still sold millions of them. Some people care about deals or the whole package offered.

If you don't care about resolution and the XSS can offer competent performance at lower res, you are all set.

Look at the last indie games focused State of Play from august vs Xbox Games Showcase a main event from MS in july.
Sony is killing it in terms of social engagement numbers.

I get that and I agree for almost all but this guy's tweet appeared for the first time and we are all ready to jump on "Fake, it's fake I'm telling ya trust me I know" bandwagon, I get you do that for Robert fucking Italian dude, Jace Skell, Tidux etc. who are mostly proved silly "insider" stuff, but this guy has been posted here for the first time and are we ready to put him in that same bin as the rest? Just give it time and wait if other ppl also mention same press junket.

To be honest marketing is weak, i still think the best event is before us. Playstation brand is just huge fuckin selling point alone.

Most people don't realize there are teams of people on both sides who strategize and coordinate marketing for each game that gets released. Those teams also need to work with their respective brand and product strategists to make sure everything aligns with the overall strategy. Oh yeah, and with a new console launch product leads who know enough details to make decisions under NDA will need to sign off as well.

You know how there are usually a few third part game screenshots on the back of our console boxes? Those alone take months of negotiating and planning since every company is different in how they want their games marketed to the world and aren't usually built in to agreements.

My friend, these people all hang out in the same places together. They are all connected on LinkedIn. Senior executives from rival companies hit the links together. Juniors go to the same coffee shops to complain about how the soy latte isn’t as good as it used to be.

There‘s always a healthy dose of competition, and always a fair degree of chagrin when a rival gets one up on you. But being scared? That’s just a child’s way of looking at things, I’m sorry to say.

I’m not in the games industry (Thank god. Must be a nightmare) but those examples send a chill down my spine. In a previous job I worked on a strategy that involved a major university. We had to get them to sign off on some copy about the university’s international focus. 500 words or so. Nothing much. Took two months to get cleared, after about six rewrites, and after a good dozen people had looked at the bloody thing.

Marketing. Why get one person to do it, when forty eight will do just as well.

That twitter guy has been posting fake stuff for a while. Photoshopped black PS5s etc. Its all fake. He knows nothing.
