What is it about the Xbox Series S that worries developers?

What are you afraid of? That console gaming will collapse or that kids growing up on smarphones will not move "up" to consoles?
Journalists proclaimed the death of consoles for a decade, yet its still there. I have no concern about the console business.

If you look at the data most of them aren't moving up to consoles, no. If they were you'd have growth to match population growth on average.

No growth is dying, slowly or otherwise. I'm not afraid of anything (I've got no skin in the game), just stating the obvious.

Maybe because Sony says they do lol.

The PlayStation®4 system now starting at $299.99 MSRP
I think you misunderstood. I know that Sony is still selling their console at $300.
I asked you, why its still selling at $300. Why are people still buyng it at $300?

It's a nightmare for everybody. It's going to be a shit show when these consoles get pro versions in 4 years time.
Who says Microsoft is doing a pro after last time lol. I think they rather dump that money in more studios for content.

I did not mean afraid as in having skin in the game or anything. Just a way of phrasing.

I don't think I gave permission for anyone to tweet as Alex Gneiting?

Stick to the plan lads, one at a time.

These Salty Devs, all of them must be on Sony paychecks, how dare they speak out, don't they know its all about 1080p Gaming, I mean come on, 4K is super expensive ...

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsun...tv-smart-led-with-hdr/6401722.p?skuId=6401722 65" 4K Samsung $500 is just too much

If they are so concerned put thier money where mouth is tell thier boss only PS5 development or we quit. If they can't hack it like the indy guys on series x I get it people get burned out. Good thing they were not around for the nes days or god help them Atari days.

They are voicing their concerns, no need for any extremism theatrics like a child would do.

This really sound like mobile development now.

gpu is not only resolution, you need to balance shaders calculations, vertex data, samples and memory. Many times scaling down doesn’t work, you need to create some lod shaders, multi compile or doing some magic sending data / batching.

Simple, X and S difference won’t be only res.

Yikes.. so not only is this a headache for developers, but it's also a headache for xbox one x owners lmao

Nope. And most won't get the full power out of the X because of having to account for the S. The S will probably hurt the PS5 too, which is unfortunate.
This has no effect on PS5 at all. Any third party that doesn't like Xbox development can drop that development and focus exclusively on the PS5. That would certainly get MS's attention and maybe they'll drop out of consoles like so many want here. The XSS will be a great entry point for people who don't have lots of money. That can grow the market and more money for the industry some of us love. Good news all around. I'm looking forward to this generation.

The XSX has 3 times the horsepower of XSS, and 4k needs roughly 4 times the horsepower over 1080p. If anything, the XSS at 1080p has more pure power than the XSX at 4k. Hense why Microsoft are highlighting 1440p for S, and not 1080p (i still think most games will be 1080p on XSS).
Fact is the developers of the console are the ones saying same effetcs, same settings, at a lower resolution. So either they are flat out lying, or they no more than the armchair devs on here.
They are lying. There is a handful of devs who are vocal in how the machine is hamstrung.

Your horsepower measurement Is merely just based on GPU theoretical compute.

CPU is slower and RAM size and speed has been significantly nuked.

Do you want to tweet on behalf of John Carmack and I'll get some stufff out there on behalf of Tim Sweeney?

There's too much positivity out there about this console, some devs are throwing themselves at it and it doesn't make any sense. I think we need to deal with this head on and balance the scales.

XSS makes no sense for someone seeking cheaper alternative:

-It doesn't support discs = you can't borrow nor sell your games.
-You are forced to pay GOLD to play online, even for free to play games, unlike PS4/PS5.
-There is nothing worth buying an xbox to begin with.

Get that shit out of here someone who actually worked on it. Only knee jerk negative reactions allowed here. Series x games are going to look like OG xbox games and series s games n64 games without the ram expansion pack. Both ruined games forever only lord cerney can say where games go.

The beautiful thing is if you don't like the XSS don't buy it. I'm not. I'm getting the XSX. I wonder if any of these developers are talking to MS to get additional dev tools to make optimization of their software easier. Complaints on Twitter seem to be more for fanboy wars over actual game development or good business practices. It will be interesting to see is MS will also struggle to make software for the XSS.

So it seems we've got half a dozen dev's expressing some level of discomfort about the S, namely that it will limit next-gen development for both Xbox first-party and third-party multiplats. Concerns about memory size and speed seem to be one of the major issues, although not the only one.

Personally, I wish MS had left the S out and just stuck to the X. I understand they want to try to undercut Sony with a cheaper, budget-friendly console, but it sounds like the S is going to limit next-gen gaming. MS doesn't believe in generations, so I guess I'm not surprised they don't care about preserving them. They just want to spread their GP seed far and wide. Hopefully, the compromises won't be too serious.

The complain already existed like DF said in the past but due NDA nobody could talk in public about it.

Now devs can talk about it.

The amount of salt the Series S is bringing among Sony GAF it's the proof that it's a great idea.
Sony fans can be more honest about the deficiencies of a competitor. Xbox fans take it upon themselves to stand for the brand. Shame, because everyone calling out this problematic approach to next gen could help everyone get better results. Next gen should be a technological jump, not whimper.

Pretty much my sentiments. Microsoft has 14 studios with hundreds of developers to runs these consoles by if the need a "developers perspective".

This whole hinges on install base. If XsS sells a lot, devs can not afford to ignore it. Let’s hope it sells like shit.

Why do they advertise it as 1440P? Is this just to avoid the dreaded Series 4k and Series 1080P jokes? I honestly never heard anyone say they bought a 1440p tv.
1440p term is more for monitors and PC Gaming.

I have always referred to my monitor as ' I have a' or 'I bought a 1440p monitor'

Some NDAs clearly got loosened a bit with the official announcement. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

People can be creative. MS spending the R&D $$$ needed to develop a cheaper box, must equate to them wanting out of (or trying to destroy) the console market.

I would have almost thought pricing the XSX high and then just saying get a low-end PC if you want something cheaper would have been a more cost effective exit strategy. 🤷‍♂️

The greatest irony here is how hard and loud MS went about having the strongest console, and then they just casually squeak out (by comparison) the XSS.

Effectively, I think this renders alot of their bullet points about XSX kind of meaningless. Games will be developed with the XSS in mind and no I don't think it will be as simple as knee capping resolution.

Even their harping of "constant" frequency or whatever regarding XSX clocks relative to the competition comes across as slightly schizophrenic now.
