PS5 price - Seems like MediaMark NL may have leaked it

Google translate is your friend:

"Rumor has it that it varies by version. For example, the digital version of the PS5 would cost € 399 and the normal version € 499. Since Sony has not made any official announcements yet, it is still speculation what it will actually cost."

The original post states that while they say this is a rumor, they are a reputable chain and the page was edited today. The last available version listed 499/599.

Also, look at the thread title.

I’m continually entertained by how many of you can’t wrap your heads around a 399.99 digital only version. Assuming the drive is 100 dollars. No you dunces. They will just take a steeper loss on a digital version because they will make it back on forced digital only purchases.

I can easily see them pushing a $399 all digital PS5 but in no way does an optical drive cost them $100 to manufacture and place in a ps5.

"Er is op dit moment nog niets bekend over een definitieve releasedatum van beide consoles. Het is wel de verwachting dat deze devices tijdens de feestdagen van 2020 te koop zijn. Ook de prijs is nog onbekend. Het gerucht gaat rond dat deze verschilt per versie. Zo zou de digitale versie van de PS5 € 399,- kosten en de normale versie € 499,-. Aangezien Sony nog geen officiële mededelingen heeft gedaan, is het nog speculeren wat hij daadwerkelijk kost. "

This literally says they don't know what it'll cost :messenger_tears_of_joy:

They speculate that it might be 399 and 499. Just like everybody else.

What a joke.

I think they were referring to the Series S.

As for those saying a €/$100 difference is not right, a 50 difference wouldn't entice anybody to buy the cheaper.

Yep, nobody bought the xbox SAD because it was only $50 cheaper. $100 is a huge difference.

LMAO 100€ for a disk drive?
That's DOA

For 200€ extra you get 3x powerful GPU + 6GB More RAM + double SSD size + a disk drive on the Series X
they are marking up the disc version to give you a bigger discount on the digital version.

PS5 BOM is $450.
Discless BOM is $430.

By pricing it at $400, sony will be losing an extra $30 on top of the retailer cut and shipping costs.
By pricing the disc version at $500, they will be recouping the $30 lost on the DE version plus an extra $20 to cut the losses even more.

I still don't understand the "$100 blue ray player" unless the digital version ironically has less storage than the non digital version

If these prices are true:

For 499 you get
  • The faster console of the two top priced consoles with 15% less teraflops and double the IO speed
For 399 you get
  • The same console without a disc drive
For 299 you get
  • A console thats 3x less less powerful than the most powerful with the same slower IO.
For those looking for cost benefit, the Digital PS5 would be the logical choice.

People don't think like this.

We buy consoles to play games.

If the PS5 digital releases at 400€, it would be a smash hit, but, Sony would take heavy losses with that console. The only way Microsoft could counteract is with a Xbox Series X digital at 400€ (Xbox Series S 300€ won't save them). Microsoft doing nothing against a 400€ PS5 digital (rumored price), then there is no point releasing their Xbox Series... it will flop hard.

This comment won't age well

Want to put a bet on it?

I'll bet my account on GAF if you bet yours:

Between the PS5 and the Xbox Series X you will see the same performance with a 0 to 20% difference in resolution or some effects toned down on the PS5 (negligible), and faster load times on the PS5. FPS will roughly be the same, I expect they may be less stable on the PS5. The PS5 will have the better looking exclusives and will load exclusives way faster than the Xbox will load theirs.

Deal?

NO
The difference between the PS5 digital and regular PS5 vs the difference between Series S and Series X
If 399/499 is real, the regular PS5 is by far the worst SKU on the market. A total rip off.
No.

At $500, you are getting an SSD that is 2.5x faster. A better controller with more features and A better audio chip.

For tech guys, thats not make sense indeed, but for consumer they're paying $100 for native BC. Rich from Digital Foundry explain that on the video I posted here. The 'only digital' lost the ability of native BC, aka put a CD and play PS4 games.

And again...

Apple priced the iPhone 6 16GB at 649 and the iPhone 6 64GB at 749. The memory alone is not worth the 100$ (more like 10 or 20), but they priced it that much lower because they wanted to sell the lower memory phone and then sell the consumer iCloud storage.
That's pretty stupid comparison, because Apple isn't selling iPhones with loss on every phone.
Sony needs to balance things out, because even at 499$ the will be selling PS5 with loss. And with 399$? That loss would be monumental.

Just realise, how much HW Microsoft shaved for Xbox Series S (less and slower RAM, half of SSD capacity, 32 less CU and less expensive cooling), priced it at 299 and they are still selling it at a loss.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
Based on the PS4 launch price that means
£349 for the Digital Edition
£449 for the Disc Edition
As a UK gamer I can tell you now that Disc Edition needs to be £400 max
Those prices aren't gonna fly

€399 would be too good to be true to be honest. €100 on top of €299 and you've got more than double the power of the Series S. Bang for your buck comparison would be too good at that price. I hope it's true though.

Not going to happen I don't think. I'm willing to take an avatar bet on that.

Maybe MS sells at 50 forever discount like Xbox One and Xbox One X.

250 euros for S is not a bad deal.

If it ends up costing more in Europe than the US after you factor in exchange rates, there would be a logical business reason for it I think. Maybe things have changed (or I was wrong) because I always understood that PS dominates XB in Europe. Less competition means you can charge a little more.

The point is that Sony will recoup way more with the Discless. That's all. It needs to be 100 difference. 50 will leave it DOA.

But if they made a console like 20~40 cheaper(sorry, dunno price stuff) just because of the disk drive wouldn't that scare the custumers?

I have a friend that may be in the US at the time of release that said he could bring me one...
So it's that or going on a trip to Foz do Iguaçu with a couple of friends early next year when hopefully covid subsides.
Grab a PS5 in Paraguay, check the town and fly back home, a weekend should be more than enough.

For those unaware, people are selling PS4 Pro for around $740 here lately.
I see you are a man of culture too. Just idiots pay the "official" (more like over abused) price in the stores here in Brazil. I live close by to Foz, making the deal a no brainer for me.

$399 for all digital would be huge! they are either breaking even at that price point or losing money.
they would probably be taking a loss but make the money back quickly since all games have to be purchased on the playstaytion store where they get a way bigger cut of the game sold.

I live in NL. It says RUMORED to be 399 and 499. Read/translate the whole page before getting hyped!

Read the first post.

As for the rumored prices, I find this funny:

Sony can't sell the PS5 at 399/499 because the fat one is too expensive, but can't sell at those prices because the Series X is that much better. So what will they do, give it away? Price it for free?

The Series X BOM is higher than the PS5 per all sources so far.

It's possible that they know more, or they are just really speculating which means we still don't know shit.

Good thing we'll have the info next week around this time, right? Heh, you'd think so, lol.

if they only made it 20,30,50 bucks cheaper everyone would neglect it. Now if you make that number 100 bucks off thats way more enticing for the customer. Especially in future generations they probably want consumers to be going digital more to cut out the middle men when selling games. Now you have a console with the same specs as the disc version but 100 dollars off.

arent the ppl in europe getting scammed then? or they pay less tax?

We always get scammed, plus you always pay less for a better product, I mean you pay 59$ for a game that's 100 localized to English while we pay 59€ (more) for games that we are lucky if are text translated to our language (looking at you M$) in those cases we should we pay less IMHO.

What do you mean?
IF PS5D is 399 you'd have to be a moron to roll with Xbox SS
this man gets it, you get a digital console much like the SS, but way more power that matches the disc version of the ps5 for only 100 dollars more of the SS. You may as well put that money down (100 bucks) and go with the more powerful system in the PS5DE

a blu ray drive is not a premium feature worth $100 (going from digital to disc-based), and if it costs Sony, let's say $450 to make the console and they profit $50 off of each disc-based version, why would they take a loss on the digital edition?

Possible.
If the digital edition PS5 is 399 i will likely just sell the few discs I have and buy them digital for cheap. It will be cheaper than buying the disc version PS5.

AMD over time reduce the prices of components. I not saying will be close or less longer than PS4, but maybe 2 years or more Sony could get profit selling hardware.
The point is if Sony really want to take that loss like PS4 have. BTW, when PS4 was launch Sony didn't even have those 'online' programs for making profit and reduce the impact of the hardware loss like he have today. Playstation Now for example.

Its up to them.

Sony will have to take a loss, but if the rumors are true and the console price would have to be around 599 to break even, then a 200$ loss is substantial. Sony arent starting off with ps4 numbers, everyone is at 0 now and they have to think about the possibility that xbox may grow in numbers next gen. Especially with a 299$ xbox.

Sony then relied on their TV and HW devisions for help. Are they doing as well these days or is playstation the money maker?

its easy to say take the loss, but the repercussions are huge if it doesnt pan out.
