Microsoft are going to announce The Acquisition of SEGA next Wednesday (Believe!)

I like a lot of MS games and I'm surprised people don't see what the plan is. It's not to compete It's control.

Yup, loose two generations in a row mainly from failing to promote a large selection of studios and milking three ips to death + killing 1 imo. Only option is to just buy the industry with that $$.

Also here's a joke. Bethesda to help develop Halo Infinite since 343 is too incompetent and has too much money.

I'm still in the PC band wagon with Microsoft. Everything they do goes to PC. Well once again instead of using that for an advantage they do gamepass and segregate the studios behind thier curtain. Can you even buy a first party game physically on an Xbox platform now with Gamepass taking the front end? So can you even own the damn games? So now I'm like why bother. PC is still the best option for gamepass if you want to pay for it.

That would mean Microsoft would own Football Manager and the Total War series. Two of my favourite game series to date.

Shit. If this is true and MS decided to put Football Manager and Total War on Xbox as well as PC, plus I wasn't already getting a PC anyway, I'd be all over the Xbox in a fucking heartbeat.

After Bethesda, I'm not gonna be surprised about anything :D

It could be interesting to see what Sony will do, if this is true. But what Sony could acquire ? Konami ?

1- If there is something, there would have announced it today pre Xbox for maximum impact .

2- buying a Japanese company isn’t something easy. Specially an iconic Japanese company. I do not think the Japanese government would allow such a purchase.

unless they go exclusive partnership forever, that means all sega games on Xbox/pc games only forever. This way sega will still be intact and their Games will be published by Microsoft

3-4chan ? Really guys ? Where is my -50$ Xbox price cut ?

Heh, maybe this is that rumoured big non acquisition deal!

You need to look at MS perspective, if they are putting that much money to buy whole Saga then they want their games to be exclusive on Xbox, at end of the day MS is a business, they are not working for charity here.
The problem is that 95% of the Atlus fan base right now is on PS/Switch, so releasing Atlus games only on XBOX/PC would hurt the sales too much.
Microsoft would still be making a lot of money from the sales on those platforms.
The end game goal would be to try and convince Atlus fans to move to the gamepass ecosystem.
Remember with XCloud gamers will be able to play future Persona/SMT games on the go with their Cellphones, which is very attractive to the Japanese market.

How many billions would that even cost? Seems a little unbelievable after spending $7.5BN to acquire Zenimax, as deep as Microsoft's pockets are.

Would give access to a massive library of exclusive ip, however.

I speculated this a while back (regarding Football Manager) they have actually already done the work to make it work on big screen with controller, as this was done for Stadia. I currently play FM only Stadia as I can play it on any screen, but if it was on Game Pass and also could run natively with cloud save synch it would be the best of all worlds.

Interestingly Miles Jacobson attended an MS Xbox event as a guest which was what initially raised my eyebrow to the possibility, could be a coincidence .

That said I would rather Sega remain independent, or at least allowed to bring their titles to all platforms.

I’m sorry but what you describing here doesn’t make any sense for MS, maybe it’s wishful thinking on your part but MS is company in business of making money, why would they spend that much money on buying Saga and still let them release their games on other systems? It just bad business and waste of money.

Do SEGA still make games or just Retro ?

It's hilarious.

Sony have had the video game market wrapped round their little finger since they entered it.

They continue to pay for exclusivity and, unlike Microsoft, don't let their games go to PC or other systems ever.

But MS buying Bethesda makes them a monopoly and scum. Just lol.
You forget that buying timed exclusivity was a practice introduced by Microsoft during the 360.

Lets not pretend that yet another corporate juggernaut walking in and buying intellectual properties instead of making their own. Would be bad if Sony did it and it would be bad if Microsoft did it.

Microsoft have had nearly 20 years in this industry and plenty of money to cultivate their own development studios and intellectual properties. And yet here we are with them flexing their financial muscle and buying out one of the largest publishers in the industry.

To be clear. I would not be happy if Microsoft bought SEGA.

Yeah, and they had every right to do so. If they have the money and Zenimax was willing to sell - why not?

Sadly I would have loved to see MS doing their own exclusive deals, and polishing their own first-party studios to show they can keep up with Sony without acting like the rich super kid that has to buy the number one place with $$$.

It's like they tried for years and just gave up doing it the hard way. Now they had to open the wallet and just buy, buy, buy.
And while Sony also did a lot of shit, yesterdays acquisition destroyed a lot of overall gaming love for me personally because MS just destroyed a lot of balance.
I really bought into their "pro consumer" and "we love all gamers" talk. Sadly they meant "pro OUR consumers" and "we love all gamers who kneel before MS".

you know when amazon/apple/google will buy publisher why not even sony in one or two generation a xbox fan will write the same thing speaking about MS
MS will have been pumping content from its 23 studios for one+ gen (like sony after ps3 gen)
Making Sony an honorable white knight now is forgetting where they are coming from. they were too the more rich boy buying studios and exclusives when they needed it.

Sega have Relic, Creative Assembly, Sports Interactive and Amplitude Studios under Sega Europe... lots of highly rated PC games in that bundle
Oh shit.. yeah didn;t do my homework.. let's go through those..

Relic: what have they made recently? Company of Heroes and Dawn of War but since then they seem to have been in hiatus.
Creative Assembly: their Total War games started to feel a bit samey. I did like the Warhammer stuff, though.
Sports Interactive: Honestly I have absolutely zero interest in Football Manager games.
Amplitude Studios: Never really heard of them but don't like 4X stuff.

In other words it's a bunch of studios making variations of strategy games.

I do like strategy games but the only I really love is Wargames. Maybe because it's modern day?

But if you're honest, Sony did nothing of that magnitude to the gaming world.
No "Hey, two generations played SKYRIM and FALLOUT on several consoles? Well, we'll buy that and make it exclusive, f*ck you, other console owners". That's just a fact.

But seeing how we still don't know whether those games will really become exclusives, we'll have to wait.

I don't remember. Also, buying timed exclusivity or paying for a perpetually exclusive game is not the same as outright buying a third-party studio.
It's exactly the same, they're shutting out certain subsets of gamers to create a competitive advantage for themselves. They're just doing it on a far grander scale.

I can only explain that by you being not old enough.
It's basically a part of how they became relevant on the market at first.
if MS is after being Netflix of video game they can release full price copy on ps platform (with or without time exclusivity on gamepass/xbox)
it Seems to work fine in video streaming world to do that (they sell content to other platform after some time)
they all are after the fomo crowd the system try to make most of us into.

Also I like all you guys keep in mind original Valkyria Chronicles Remastered still hasn’t released on Xbox, neither Sakura Wars. Yeah.....I just can’t see Saga becoming part of MS.

Im all for it if it means Sega starts digging into their arcade past and not just Genesis collections. Maybe Outrun 3 could finally happen.

But you still haven't told me which franchises Sony bought away from other consoles back in the day?
I was there day one with my self earned money to buy my PlayStation 1 back in the day and can't remember the news of Sony buying away a beloved franchise/publisher to release the following sequels on their newest console only.

The second part of your comment may be true, but we don't know just yet and have to see how MS will react.

Microsoft needs to gain traction in the gaming market the hard way: pushing the development teams that they already have to produce quality games, rather than removing talent from the multi-platform market.
Bend was founded in 1993 and acquired by Sony in 2000
Guerrilla was founded in 2000 and was acquired in 2005
MM was founded in 2006 and acquired in 2010
Naughty Dog was founded in 1984 and Sony bought them in 2001
Sucker Punch was founded in 1997 and acquired in 2011

Were you saying that Sony should push their dev teams instead of removing talent from the multiplatform market back then?

None of those developers were multiplatform that I can remember. A lot of them were effectively 2nd party developers that pretty much exclusively made PlayStation games.

Still, its one thing to buy a small 2nd party developer and grow their stature. And its another thing entirely to buy a massive billion dollar publisher with multiple development teams under them and a wealth of intellectual property.

But you are right. Its still not a good thing to just buy development teams. It wasn't good then. And it isn't good now.

on top of my head FF is a recurrent one.
they did it this gen too.

it's easy to paint MS as the monster but in this the context :
  • competition has huge mindshare advantage
  • competition is using this mindshare advantage to lock content from you
  • you want to launch netflix of video game and need to pump lot of content into it
  • you have lot of money

in this context , what would you do ?
part of the reason of this move is consequence of sony own behavior.

But Sony never bought Square or the exclusive rights to the newest FF game for all times, right?
MS just didn't care for many years - and once they did, Square released FF and Kingdom Hearts on Xbox as well.
So sadly FF doesn't work.

As much as I would love this and see Sonic on an exclusive platform again. This is not happening. Microsoft buying Bethesda legit has people going nuts on bullshit.

It's actually a perfect example. Sony fans are complaining that franchises that were available on Sony hardware will no longer be available on Sony hardware in the future because they are now paid for by MS.

FF has been on Xbox, and PC, for over a decade, yet Sony is paying for them not to be on either.

At least MS let's all it's games go to PC, so consumers have options. Sony is the one trying to force gamers into buying their hardware.
