Dirt 5 next gen upgrades may miss PS5 launch, saves won't transfer from PS4 version

It's weird those save games can't transfer. Is this for all games?
No Spider-Man:MM you can transfer saves from the PS4 version to PS5 so I don't know what the problem is.

So I assume the PS5 has a different save game format from PS4 and this is what causes the issue, or maybe something as simple as these games have different IDs in the database and therefore don't see the other version on the game. 🤷‍♂️

again that's a new SONY game. it seems like an infrastructure deal.. they switched something. spoderman doesn't transfer. if it wasn't an infrastructure change there is no reason why spiderman shouldn't work as well.
It's okay, sony can be the ones behind this with legitimate reasons.

Doesn't this game release after the next gen consoles? Not a big issue then is it.

It's in the OP.

Releases on Series X launch day, and late 2020 for PS5.

You can play the PS4 version on your PS5, but it'll obviously not be optimised and you won't be able to transfer your save to the PS5 version if/when that materialises.

It's a pretty big deal, especially as it's the third game unable transfer crossgen saves on PS, and could be a big headache down the line if say...Cyberpunk 2077 saves don't transfer, or FF7R.

Why are people shocked at stuff like this from Sony. They’re laughably behind MS in software and services. We finally got name changes in 2019 because PSN is shit.
When did Xbox get:

- suspend / resume
- remote play
- cloud gaming
- Twitch streaming
?

Probably loads of other things Sony did first, those are just the ones off the top of my head.

Now you know why Sony has shut their mouths about BC.

Because if they go into details, more people will chime in asking about BC save states. Dirt is an example of no cross gen saves. Yakuza is another one. It took a random dude on Twitter to get that info about it.

Expect more to come.

They do believe in generations. That’s why they don’t want you to play on the old console. It’s all becoming true now.

But some games allow transfer of saves. So clearly the devs have this option.

XO and PS4 both had suspend resume at launch, not sure how that's a win?
Is having cloud gaming first to be applauded over having a much better approach?
Signing twitch to an exclusive deal is nice, but it isn't really a sony first thing.

First party games, from what I've seen, so far?

It's definitely unusual.
There must be some weird shit going on between PS4/PS5 OS, architecture or something making it a pain. On the other hand Xbox and PC can do cross gen saves across different hardware and OS.

No wonder Sony doesn't want to let game sites do testing.

What they'd do is test out old games BC performance, and they also notice WTF! The PS4 saves don't work on PS5! Something nobody would expect to bomb out.

If it ends up being a console issue and not game specific then IMO it's a completely brain dead move to not implement the transfer of PS4 saves/support them.

Now I'm lucky that I have no saves to be bringing over, so it's not a huge deal to me directly. However, for those who DO have PS4 progress they'd like to carry on with, the fact you could be shit out of luck potentially is a bit of a kick in the goolies.

Suspend/Resume is flakey as fuck one the XB1, 50% of the time I suspend the console games don't suspend and just restart upon resume, this has happened on all 3 of the hardware editions I have had.

Yes it should be applauded, time will tell if it is a better approach. I personally think xCloud is better technically than PSNow but inferior to Stadia (business models aside). But Sony have been pushing that side of things for a while, so I look forward to seeing how they improve it this gen.

I thought live video streaming thing was initially technical issue, but fair enough if it was just an exclusive deal. MS probably should just start their own game video streaming service :messenger_winking:

Our friend Panjev claims smart delivery is just a marketing term. Sony can do the same thing.
Well, what his view on this? 🤷‍♀️

Smart delivery is a marketing term. Loading binaries on respective required devices is like ... dead simple. They took a page out of Apple's book in trying to name standard technologies to make it sound like something special. Remember when Apple cd writable drives were called "Super Drives"? :messenger_tears_of_joy: A more recent example would be Apple's hybrid SSD and HDD setups being referred to as "Fusion Drives." They do this for everything. It's not less stupid when Microsoft does it, but at the same time it's a smart move. I guess that makes MS Tessio and Sony Clemenza. How is that for a left field analogy?

The cross save issue is likely just a developer issue, i.e. who is putting in work to support it and who is not. It might be easier to do on the MS side depending on API/SDK design. It should be completely doable in theory on PS5 unless there is some kind of wall between PS4 and PS5 data on the Sony "cloud" side, but if Spiderman MM is doing it, it's possible. Everything is just data when it comes down to it, and data can be transferred as well as transformed to necessary formats.

My guess? It takes a little more work on the Sony side and developers are saying "screw it" because it's just not going to matter in the grand scheme of things. The only people complaining will be a few whiners on game forums. Do you think in even 1 year people are going to be worried about "cross saves" when buying an XSX game or PS5 game? Not look out to 5+ years .... how much of the landscape was affected by this?

Zero.

Guys, I think we have found where Sony's "we believe in generations" statement is true: in cross-gen saves. Ain't nobody saving a game on a PS4 and then continuing their progress on the PS5, because they need to experience the entire game in the new generation!

In all seriousness though, this is a misstep on Sony's part, IMO and I like how it is not an issue for Xbox. Sure, this will only be an issue for some for the first year or so of this new generation, but when your competitor is able to remove some of the generation transition friction, it would be nice to be able to match that as well.

I love being able to go from my Xbox One X, to my PC, and back to the Xbox without losing progress in the game. Not all games support it, but I really like the option for when someone wants to use the TV that my Xbox is on. With the Series X and many cross gen games, I am looking forward to having one more device to hop around with when needed. With Sony getting more and more into the PC game space, maybe they will work on a system for cross saves, so when PS6 comes by this won't be an issue then.

Side note, I think I found the name of my new band, Generation Transition Friction; or at least an album title. :D :D

What's up with saves not transferring?! This isn't the first game. Yakuza too.

My gut tells me this is due to somehow PlayStation save game data is written and the differences between PS4 and PS5 games. I does not seem like the PS5 has a built in feature to transfer the saves. However, I am assuming that Xbox does, because it does not seem like any game does not support cross gen saves. In the grand scheme of things, it only affects cross-gen games for the next year or so, but it is an annoyance for those with a PS4 and PS5.

Xbox saves can sync across PC/Xbox/Series X.

True. Cross-save through the cloud had been a "thing" on Sony systems at least as far back as 2012, several years before either Microsoft or Nintendo cared to offer any such luxuries themselves. I wrote the following in this post two days ago:

There are lots of games (big and small) that supported cross-save between PS3, PS4, and PS Vita. Sony promoted this feature pretty heavily at a time when their two chief competitors turned a blind eye to it.

Cross-save is accomplished by saving data to the cloud. I'm not talking about PS Plus cloud saves (like you would use to back up saved data for personal use), but cloud saves within the games themselves, maintained by the game's publisher. Some games required the user to manually sync the saves, while others accomplish this automatically without any user intervention--it was all up to the developer's implementation.

If little games like Sound Shapes, CounterSpy, Shovel Knight, Another World, Velocity 2X, and several NeoGeo emulations could pull off cross-save cleanly without a hitch, then there's no excuse for a major commercial release to restrict it.

Heck, I remember that Grand Theft Auto V for PS4 went as far as allowing you to import save data from the Xbox 360 version of the game.

It's up to the game's publisher and/or developer to get this sorted out. If they are having difficulty, then they should seek assistance from Sony and/or any of the developers of the games mentioned above.

Add screenshot function on the original Xbox One. It wasn't even available...and also share play.

If the developers are having issues with it, that shows that the support is not built in as easily into the SDK as it is for Xbox. That blame still goes onto Sony for not making a system that is streamlined and easy for this type of transition to work.

Using you GTA example, GTA was able to do that because it started to save your information in its own cloud network, not PSNs or the other system. They created their own system that could save the game in the cloud and then convert the data for another platform so it could be imported. Not every developer is going to spend the time and resources to do that.

For Xbox, it really looks like Microsoft spent time to make the tools easy and accessible for developers to use, which would be why we are seeing that saves will be supported. They have already been doing it with a lot of their games that are on both PC and Xbox with their cross saves. Even games not made by Mircosoft, like Final Fantasy XV, support Xbox to PC saves.

This really seems like to be a case where Microsoft has developed easy tools for the developers to use where Sony has not.

They are probably regarded as different games on PS5 which is pretty stupid tbh.

My guess would be something like that too. I believe there are already cases where the ultimate edition is considered a different game and saves are not compatible. I wouldn't be surprised if the ps4 and ps5 versions have different trophy lists too. They really do need to sort this out.

Oh ok, very interesting. Love the detail.

I'd say the evidence is in full support of this take.

This isn't on devs its on Sony. MS handles all save data in the cloud. All games have one identifier and it syncs saves on PC/XBO/Series X.

Developers don't have to do anything for save data management on XBL. It's handled by the console and done automatically.

I have a feeling that any "save game" transfers for PS4 to PS5 will be handled via a manual upload to PS+ and then an attempt to convert the file to PS5. At that point you can no longer use that save on PS4. It won't move back. Think of it like a patch on PC applied to a save. I have a feeling this is how this will work. It explains why they haven't touched it.

Xbox is running save anywhere so you can move between different consoles/hardware and your save will remain in sync even over generations.
