Minecraft Steve revealed for Smash Bros Ultimate

You can just buy the individual fighter for $6 once it releases. That'll include any music and stages it adds.
Ah, well that's good to know. I may just buy the pass anyway in the hopes that this inclusion means that DoomSlayer may not be out of the question down the road lol. I'd be as excited for DoomSlayer as she is about Steve, maybe more.

How many people know who this is?
How many people know who Byleth is? Richter Belmont (compared to Simon)?

Travis has three mainline games exclusive to a Nintendo console. Perfectly understandable why some people would want to see him in Smash. My only issue with Steve/Alex is that I personally don't care much for Minecraft and don't associate it with the Nintendo brand. I only played it on the PC so it will always remind me that, whereas a lot of characters you see in Smash remind me of Nintendo.

But I understand Minecraft has become really popular (more or less like how well-known Pac-Man is) so I kind of get it.

I think we know by now that Fire Emblem doesn't have to play by the same rules (I realize there are no rules) when it comes to Sakurai.

Richter is just an echo of Simon. You can go watch the intro trailer again; it's a Simon trailer with a Richter cameo.

None of which has done much for sales, though I'm sure they have their fans. Something of a Wonderful 101 situation, I suppose -- and I don't anticipate ever seeing Wonder-Red in Smash.

Personally I would have gone with Herobrine instead of Steve if I was giving Minecraft a character slot.

How has that made you so mad that you say that to someone? You insult a real person over your fanboyism of a fictional character? Grow up and don't take this shit so seriously.

I'm just saying if you won't allow Minecraft on your TV, the only conclusion is you don't and won't have children.

Either that, or your one of the jerk parents who only allow their kids to be interested in things they like themselves.

And, lol... did you just call me a Minecraft fanboy?

I was exclusively referring to the character being in Smash Brothers; not the actual game...but I don't think that matters to you and your temperament with other people, so I probably shouldn't have even bothered explaining this to you.

Minecraft doesn't say much to me personally (Doomguy is more the kind of guy for me if we are talking about MS).

But I would say that block game is more impactful to gamming than purple party aberration. (Why they didn't just use Captain Syrup for a Tennis partner it still makes me wonder)

All this talk about Minecraft Steve has made me want to try out Minecraft on the Switch. Does anyone know if it's enjoyable on that console?

I guess people just associate Minecraft with youtube influencier bullshit, and that blury their perception of the game itself a little.

I played quite a bit when it was on alpha and it was a one man job. When other developers joined I was not playing that anymore. I didn't followed any internet drama that might had occured after that. Just know it sold a lot and MS bought it.

For me it's a nice crafting survival game with a good amount of freedom. So i'm like on "i kinda understand the hate but not quite" side of the fence.

I've never even played Minecraft once, but in recognition that the game is HUGE and kids everywhere are obsessed with it, I'm neither surprised nor outraged.

I still want Master Chief and/or Doom Guy. Also, Scrooge McDuck (Ducktales was my first NES game). Not gonna happen, but he's a megaton gaming character for me lol.

They have pretty much every other character I want already, especially after Castlevania jumped aboard.

Steve looks fun as fuck to play. Advanced character for sure though. Once somebody gets good at block edge guarding they will be a terror

After watching the whole presentation, it is funny to me that the most young kid centric character is going to be one of the harder ones to use in the game. Managing mining, keeping your crafting station operational, using materials on special moves, ect is going to be a pain. Filling up ink for inkling while somebody is bearing down on you is tough enough but Steve looks like you need to dedicate even more time by mining certain areas to get better blocks more reliably. His up B glider looks kind of wonky to try and control too in the heat of battle.

Excited to try him on the 13th.

Another amazing job from Sakurai and co. They’ve once again put the entire crossover game and mechanics themselves inside Smash.

It would have been so easy to create a generic fighter that threw out some moves that looked visually Minecraft, but were no different from any other fighter in the game. They took the much, much harder road, and the result is wonderful for fans.

I just watched the presentation. Incredibly impressed with how much they captured from the game . The minutiae of every mechanic...even down to what materials are mined from every stage and which tool is used. The stage was impressive as well. The whole thing looked so much like Minecraft at times I had to remind myself I was looking at Smash.

Minecraft looks pretty op in Smash tbh.
Wall building looks good for trolling lol.
Edit: I also want Doom guy to be added!
The meat hook shotgun, chainsaw, crucible sword, plasma gun, rocket launcher and bfg for attacks.

Sakurai’s team outdid themselves with this one. You’re basically playing Minecraft inside Smash Bros. The fact they reworked stages so you could mine them and build blocks anywhere is nuts.

That occurred to me too; but I think it’s exactly right. Even very young Minecraft players are used to tracking resource needs and tool condition and food and more all at once. I bet they feel right at home once they understand which actions match to which buttons. (I’m assuming also that some Minecraft players will try Smash for the first time just because of the Minecraft content.)

Travis being announced as a mii skin is salt in the wound. Sakurai trolling his heart out with this.

If Lara doesn't make it this patch then this season is pretty much a waste.

Regardless of how you like any of the DLC entries, the care that Sakurai's team takes to insert them into SSBU is undeniable. The presentation today was incredible in showing that. I think this inclusion looks amazing. My son and I watched Minecraft Live shortly after, and seeing the passion of the team and breadth of the Minecraft community really reminds me of other gaming communities I've been a part of. Again, just amazing. And I doubt I would have had the same mindset going into that without the inclusion of Steve in SSBU. Thanks to Mojang and Sakurai for helping to build that moment and connection with my son!

For $5.99 DLC, made with a skeleton crew (compared to the base game), under remote work restrictions. Really puts it into perspective. I wonder how many other developers would have done that, and how many publishers would have signed off on it, instead of just making a normal character?

I have to say, even for people that don’t necessarily care about this character (not the ones getting whiny and insulting, screw them), the way it plays might end up being a really fun addition to the game for them anyway.

I love the way that Steve looks as a fighter. I assumed Steve wouldn’t be made simply because I didn’t see a way to make him work. It looks like they really nailed it with their design here. I was not interested in Steve at all, but now he is the DLC character I’ve been most excited to try. I can’t wait to see what fighters still remain.

People hating on minecraft are really hipsters, the game was super popular in niche gaming back in the alpha days and was in no means something that a kid would play back then given how everything had to be discovered, they managed to make the game a big success and suddenly it became a kids game? What a bullshit actitud, the game was revolutionary and still is with how much shit has been added to the game with the years.

Sakurai and his team seem to really have poured a bunch love in to it too, it's not just another sword character, it seems to have very unique skills like the weirdest smash characters, very cool.

Alexios

Cores, shaders and BIOS oh my!
Holy fuck, Sakurai's insane to have made all these different mechanics just to accomodate one character. I mean they could have gone the easy route and just assigned different tools to different moves like purely a visual thing but nope, you actually dig and craft and build, wtf? He's nuts!

The new Mii costumes are cool too, especially Travis and Bomberman.

But wtf is going on here, I never liked Minecraft since the alpha/Java days (I bought it directly from Notch, it was a near instant hit, I bought other games like Mount & Blade's beta in this manner so, you're not somehow better or the only one to have heard of games before they got huge/got on Steam). It just wasn't for me, I wanted more in depth gameplay mechanics beyond digging and building and they never really expanded on the rest of it, it's super barebones with its survival, combat, enemies, variety, all the other elements in the world outside building. Of course since you can build stuff in terms of that your imagination (and grinding in adventure mode) is the limit, but I prefer being creative in other media, not Minecraft houses. How's that enough to label me as a hipster or whatever? Also if anything hipsters love it still. And it's always been a kids game and there's nothing wrong with that, I love other kids games, just not this one. Also Steve sucks, the graphics suck (seriously, if Minecraft wasn't a thing and this wasn't a Steve but some random miner/builder/villager/whatever from another game wouldn't you want them to be well designed with nice graphics and still have all these abilities with higher fidelity in models, textures, animations?), but this is a worthwhile addition as far as gameplay is concerned. I wouldn't have even commented on that, just how crazy this is for Smash, if you lot weren't going off characterizing people.

Everyone would be shitting on them for including steve if they didnt go all out in making him unique and worth a slot. i mean, much more than they are now.

So 4 characters left. I assume we are getting 1 new character per Quarter Semester next year.

My guesses:
February/March (Monster Hunter Rise Release): Monster Hunter Rep
June/July (E3 time): Character 4
August/September: Character 5
November/December (Game Awards Time): Character 6
