Unconfirmed: PS5 to have 664GB usable space

Thats what i said earlier, at least with PS5, the option for 2TB or more expansion is more readily available. Please pay more over there at Samsung or Corsair or WD. 🤷‍♀️

Absolutely nothing is available for the PS5 - nothing, not even a confirmed internal size because their communication is a fucking embarrassment at this stage - and I don’t want to have to fadge around with screwdrivers or opening the thing up either. I never upgraded storage on my PS4 for this reason. I could, maybe, who knows, but I won’t.

At least Microsoft has a simple, day one solution. If Sony fuck this up, as they have a tendency to do (and their silence is fucking deafening) I’m going to be stuck doing the PS5 shuffle to externals for it’s lifetime.

Hype Train conductor. Works harder than it steams.
On the back of the PS5 leaks in the sub, we now have caps.

I'm sure MS have said there will be different size cards and manufacturers also.

The great thing is I can keep what I'm playing now on a card and just unplug it and plug it into one of the 3 Series X/S consoles in my house very easily in seconds. Taking out that PS5 add on drive and moving it around not so much.

That’s a really good point, hadn’t thought about it that way. They definitely put a lot of thought into their solution - whatever the PS5 does, if they ever tell us, I guess we already know it will be as un-user friendly as the PS4, in fact even more so given the compatibility issues and the fiddliness of installing an NVME, needing to screw it down and such...

Was going to wait on the Seagate expansion, but you might just have changed my mind.

I could believe it, my PS4 now even has tonnes of dead space. "55gb required for update!" I have that available... I SAID 55GB REQUIRED FOR UPDATE. So much unusable space when the HDD is full.

I’m generally a big Sony fan (and I think that actually makes me more likely to be critical), but I can’t help but to feel like they are repeating “arrogant Sony” again like with the PS3.

I’m all for SSDs. Hell, I’ll probably upgrade my MB in my PC just to take advantage of Gen 4 SSDs in the near future but I don’t think having a drive this fast will actually give them any sort of advantage over the Xbox ssd. Yeah it’s cool to have this blazing fast ssd that even PCs are just starting to get. But consoles are about compromising to get a reasonably priced box. I don’t think third parties are going to cater to the SSD to a point where you are actually getting the 2x benefit over the Xbox.

If the useable storage is true for both then as it stands now I’d rather have the extra ~200 GB then have speeds I can’t take advantage of in the majority of games.

And with the $200 price gave of that Samsung drive which should be compatible I’m not going to expand my storage, especially when the prospect of refresh consoles are still on the table.

I agree with all this.

In my mind, the most hilarious scenario is if we suddenly and collectively realize we need a new (not unreasonably-priced) SSD for every 2-3 games.
AND THEN need an SSD for every new game.
AND THEN finally coming full-circle with every game shipped with his actual physical support. Like, you now, a DISC.

If that's Sony's endgame, I support it completely.

Smart design from Microsoft indeed.

If your launching a console with just over half the available space announcing the upgrade drives after the launch is a pretty stupid move

I don't care about how much hard drive space I have, I only care about the games.

Imagine only having enough space to install Call of Duty. It's unacceptable.

The only good thing about PS5 storage solution, you can add 2TB of fast nvme storage in a few months time

Whereas poor Series gamers are stuck at their 1TB, unless you constantly swap memory cards :messenger_grinning_sweat:
I'm pretty sure i can connect my 4 tb drive and swap the games from external to internal as and when required

As long as we got that install whatever parts of the game you want feature, we'll survive, dawg.

seriously blowing my mind that they would allow that knowing that game install sizes are only getting bigger and bigger. And lord help me if they pull that bullshit where you need like double the freespace to actually install a game. "Please free 10 gb" for a patch that's like 200 mb. I don't know what they're thinking.

You won't save half of the game size. For an example single player and online cod uses many of the same assets etc.

The number makes sense. If you convert 825gb to base 2, you’ll get ~764gb being seen by the console. And you can assume the OS will probably be the same size as PS4, ~100gb.

Also because of this, the Series X Drive is only 930gb before the the OS is taken into account.

I get the feeling that all this focus on super fast ssd speeds will have turned out to be impractical when it turns out that almost all games won't be using it for much more than fast loading. You could still get decently fast load times with a normal sata ssd and they could have given us 2 TB and probably had the console cost less. Sure a few 1st part titles will take full advantage of the I/O architecture in game but thats probably 1% of the games coming to the console. Is that worth having really bare bones storage capacity? Not imo

Has it been confirmed if you replace that SSD with another or do you simple add a second one in? If it's a case that the SSD can't be removed but you can add a second one in then that's really good. It means when I eventually buy a 2TB SSD my total space will actually be 2.5TB which is really good.

I would not use the phrase "very good". I would use "the expected"

Yeah lol, that was a bit weird. If I buy 2TB expansion then I will be able to use it as expansion. All in all though, I don't think there's enough dedicated content for PS5 only at the moment. BC will be fine on external HDD. GTA V and GTA:O will be an interesting case though.

But will it be an expansion or do you replace the stock SSD? On ps4 you replaced the internal hdd with another so will ps5 have 2 ssds inside it?

No, the internal one is soldered on for PS5 and there is an expansion slot.....somewhere.

Don't see what the issue is unless you want 10-15 games installed at the same time.

I personally only have 2 to 3 games installed at any given time.

Ones I am playing currently.

It would be an issue if we got a game with an installation size the size of the entire SSD.

Remember being unable to play BOTW on a basic Wii U.

Where and when can I buy it? You do know that we need to wait for Sony to confirm it, right? You can’t just buy any storage solution.
