The petition size is 420GiB but only 408GiB is useable by the user.

I’m calling it. PS5 SDK/architecture differentiates data types. It knows to segregate game data vs game assets. Suspending a game results in only a ~few meg written out to ssd, resuming it, game data is re-loaded and assets are loaded from the install; and you are back to where you were.

Unlimited game suspend/resume - low space required. This is the secret surprise hinted at.

Yeah I think Sony might have something like this going on.

When you consider the potential reduction in SSD life by rewriting large chunks of data, I think Sony may not have gone the same route as MS, and instead went for a more SSD preserving solution.

Their SSD cold launch speed seems to be so fast that they’ll comfortably load a save state and game data in the time a quick resume function could take.

I also wonder if the switcher tool is a way to manage the storage and selectively delete these save states. As far as I saw the Xsex throws away the oldest quick resume state - I don’t remember if it warns the user when it does this either.

The only thing on my mind is whether Sony have made it developer optional to build their game to support the quick resume function...

If we assume PS4/5 OS uses GiB (base 2 aka binary) then we get this

PS4 500 GB = 465 GiB and we see ~ 405 GB free space in UI, so OS uses 60 GiB roughly
PS4 Pro 1 TB = 930 GiB and we see ~ 870 GB free space in UI, so OS uses 60 GiB roughly.
PS5 825 GB = 768 GiB and we see 664 GB free space in UI, so OS uses 104 GiB.

Yeah I read an interview with the lead PS5 engineer (from the teardown) in Japanese translated on here and he listed the max size M2 SSD that can fit. I checked the WD SN850 with heatsink and I think it was too large to fit.

The leaker UI did show pounds instead of dollars so maybe it is different in UK. Or maybe they just have a different experience if the console is offline/signed out, or not updated to latest firmware? idk

The internal HDD is showed in GiB (base 2).
