Xbox Raises Price of 6-month Gold Sub to $59.99 (Up: Policy reversed, prices to stay the same)

It sucks without a doubt for Live Gold subscribers if they weren't auto renewing that is, the smart thing to do is to stock up on 3 years of Xbox Live subsriptions and convert that to Game Pass Ultimate, so you have at least three years for a relative cheap price and see if you like the service and if you wan't to continue your sub after those three years for 15 bucks a month. I'm a Game Pass Ultimate subscriber so for me nothing has really changed.
The cheap Live to GP conversion only works for new accounts and it’ll soon be a lot more expensive for everyone. And who knows how long the current GPU price will stand?
I’d say that the honeymoon is over for Game Pass, for many of us it’ll soon be a lot more expensive, I currently pay about $5/month but it ends next year.

Not a good look but for now there are billions of cards in best buy you can buy. I've got ultimate set up for 2 years so that doesn't help me. Ultimate will probably be increased by the time that's up.

Live to GP works on any account. After converting the $1 deal to GPU. You will have to instead convert the regular $15 for GPU

I have about 2 1/2 years left on GP ultimate and 3 12 months cards leftover I got for $36 awhile back (each). That should hold me to almost next gen.

Looks like you're grandfathered in, if you keep renewing.

Sucks for new people jumping in, provided they jump in after all the e-tail/retailers reflect the new pricing.

I'm fairly certain this is just in preparation to roll Gold into standard Game Pass and make online play part of that tier. Then they will likey add extra incentives to Ultimate.

This seems like a likely scenario

honestly as owner of both platform ..who would stay just with gold on xbox ? the ultimate offering is so overwhelmingly superior that the only valid reason for getting Gold was for the conversion trick.
Maybe the guy who only play fornite, Call of duty, fifa and dont give a fuck about having 200 games?

What did anyone expect? Right now its cheap because their studios hardly release anything.

Starting in 2022 they are going to release Avowed, Fable, Starfield, Doom Next and god knows how many other games into the service. Somethings gotta give at some point. It wouldn't surprise me if they split the GP catalogue into several different tiers later on.

I don't really care what they do. If their games are good, I'll keep subbing, If not, I'll cancel.

Sooo...it's basically a price increase for new subscribers? Why not just convert all new Gold subscriptions to a Gamepass subscription? They could've kept the price the same, LITERALLY just convert the new Gold subscribers to a Gamepass equivalent subscription for the length of time the Gold subscription would've covered. Seems like it'd of been the much better option.

As-is this looks like it's blowing up in Microsoft's face, even with the core of the community. I really don't get why Microsoft did this the way they did and couldn't predict the pushback that's coming about. I'm not saying they're the only one who's pulled off stuff like this, lest we forget Sony silently increased cost of their games to $70. But the thing is, Sony at least did it the right way (right in terms of optics, not that it was ethically right to do): they buried that price increase behind hype for their PS5 showcase and new game footage, release dates, and preorder openings.

Why didn't Microsoft think to do something similar? Again yes, it'd probably look a tad bad but if they had pushed this quietly behind, say, some new gameplay footage for Hellblade II, Halo Infinite, or some major AAA game they have marketing exclusivity on like Elden Ring, I guarantee you the vast majority would focus on that instead and it'd of softened the blow of this Gold price increase. As-is, this just feels like they're giving Sony an opportunity to capitalize to build more goodwill and positive optics with the gaming community, at the expense of Microsoft.

Terrible way to go about communicating this decision IMHO.

I'm kind of indifferent to this. When my three years is up I'll either continue with gamepass, or continue with gamepass periodically or be a none gold member.

Sony fans have to remember though the outrageous price first party titles are been charged in the majority of the world ($96 standard SKU).

Hopefully they will figure out the right balance between how much content they are giving vs how much they are taking or dividing. Amazon had the right idea with Prime. They kept the price consistent for a very long time and kept adding more value without increasing the cost. Since then, they have raised the price twice so far but they set the expectation of increasing value without immediately charging more before they did anything drastic such as a price increase.

Right now all we have is a promise that Microsoft will be releasing first party games day & date to Game Pass. Hopefully they won't raise it during that time. Right now we're not really getting any new first party games on Game Pass.

The fact that they sneakily increased the price after selling their new consoles is very shitty. They basically tricked a bunch of people into buying an S thinking it would be a cheap alternative, but now that $300 console is basically a $420 console in the first year.

And $720+ $300 console for the rest of the gen, so $1,020.

PS5 DE in comparison would be $400+360 = $760.

For $1,020 you can build a 12+ tflops PC.

Lmao my god son plays fortnite on xbox because his parents thought it was a console more suited for kids. Not only would they have saved €60 a year because its FTP on playstation but they'll now be paying €120 extra. Suckers for believing gamestop employees and not doing proper research.

I can see Sony having ps plus at €70 and FTP requiring plus eventually but won't follow MS to rip off prices.

Yes my advise is for new accounts only. There is always the option to make a new account though and do the three years of Game Pass Ultimate 'trick' and set that account as your home console account so anyone who logs in on the console enjoys the Game Pass Ultimate sub.

I'm content with 15 a month for Game Pass Ultimate as I think it's worth it and now with the new price of Gold especially, and think the price hike for gold is more so to get people to sub to Game Pass Ultimate for a little bit more but it would be smart to leave the 15 bucks a month price for GPU as is and not up the price in the near future.

While I was happy to pay £11 a month for GP when my current deal ends I feel like cancelling it in support of the people who only wanted gold as this is a complete piss take. I'll move to Sony only (was getting a PS5 as well anyway) and possibly get a PC.

$15/month is a big price increase for anyone who jumped in when you could get it at $5/month because of the stacked 3 year XBL to GP conversion. That honeymoon period is ending soon for many of us, stacking XBL at $60/6 months to convert to GPU is not as interesting. Their whole value proposition changes because of this. And we don’t even know if they plan to increase the price for GPU as well, to me it seems logical since XBL going forward will seem like a scam compared to GPU.

And this is Amazon. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002VBWIP6/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Plus where do you think CD Keys et al get their codes from? Do they hack into Microsoft and generate impossible codes? No. They have stock of real 12 months codes.

Just because MS doesn't sell direct does not mean it does not exist. Likewise despite the gloom over the withdrawal I can go to any retailer in my country and they all still sell the 12 month option.

You are presenting a false argument. Give it up.

Those are Playstation users for the most
Becouse is the most recognized brand in the console market

Maybe later in this generation could happen a flip flop for the low price of the series s

I have like two years of GPU, so I'll just wait and see what happens. Right now I think GPU is worth the full $15/mo. without question. If that changes I won't re-up, at least not on a regular basis.

So many good thoughts here. It really is a huge PR blunder. Instead of ”OMG, my Xbox Live sub just got upgraded to Game Pass Ultimate! MS rulez!” they got ”Wut?! 100% price increase on Xbox Live!? That’s it I’m going with Playstation instead now!”.

Are you serious? 🤨

Elaborate. Please.
I said simply pay 69.99 you have to pay for online. Pay to win no online fee the retail customer is a second class citizen. You either treat both the same or retail customers better since they actually brought a 69.99 dollar game. You don't treat the 69.99 customer worse. If I go to a store they are not treating the guy using the bathroom better than the guy buying a new car.
