Guerrilla Games tells GamesRadar+ what to expect from Horizon Forbidden West

"We're so excited to spend more time in this world, expanding its lore and continuing Aloy's journey," a Guerrilla spokesperson told GamesRadar, after we went looking for new information. "There are so many gameplay and storytelling possibilities in this universe and we can't wait to explore them further in Horizon Forbidden West."
"Part of what made the machine combat in Horizon Zero Dawn so satisfying was the puzzle-solving element in each encounter. What is this machine's attack pattern? What are its weaknesses? Which strategies are most successful? There was the harsh reality of stumbling upon machines that you weren't quite ready to take on. Our reveal trailer showed players they can look forward to things they've never seen before, but we'd like to leave it at that for now and preserve as much of that satisfaction for players to discover for themselves."
Combat isn't the only area of Horizon Forbidden West where Guerrilla is expanding and enriching the foundation it set with Zero Dawn. As seen in the reveal trailer, Aloy now possesses an underwater breathing apparatus, which allows her to descend into Earth's lakes and oceans, uncovering new treasures, revelations, and threats beneath.
Guerrilla stops short of revealing anything more about its next iteration of future Earth, but promises "a dangerous, mysterious place, filled with new challenges and discoveries"

meh. Nothing here folks.

I would not expect from this game after playing Miles. These cross gen games are basically last gen games with slightly prettier graphics, ray tracing and 60 fps. You will have the same exact gameplay, same exact world interactivity, same everything.

Cross-gen...?

Why exactly did I buy a PS5 for exclusive next-gen experiences if the games I'm interested in playing AREN'T next-gen!?

HFW Better deliver on those reveal graphics.

I dunno, why did you? They announced that it was cross-gen months before PS5s went on sale. You didn't have to buy one yet.

Truth is GG said they couldn't do flying mounts in the first game because the HDD was too slow. An SSD specifically fixes that issue, BUT.............they can't because this game is coming out on the PS4 too. :(
So how come you can fly in GTA 4 and 5? Makes this argument rather redundant don't ya think?

Honestly.... A really... really... stupid excuse. GTAV on PS3 has jets that take 5 minutes to cross the map. It just doesn't make sense why a SSD is needed. It seems to me that they simply don't want to end up managing memory in a different way.

I think I’ve had my fill of Horizon. I didn’t even bother to play Frozen Wilds. It was novel but doesn’t have staying power for me.

Exactly what I said.

Damn I missed that.

I was going to wait to get a PS5 at least a year after release, but I had a good opportunity to get on at a big discount, so I just bit the bullet, with intentions of playing exclusives.

I have a PC that is used for multi-plats.

EDIT: My PS5 has been laying behind my tv for like... 2 months, untouched. After I beat Demon Souls, I haven't touched it since. Haha I feel like a jackass. Someone else could be enjoying it. :messenger_pensive:

I don't want to be too cynical and I absolutely loved HZD for inexplicable reasons, but knowing this is a cross-gen game makes me feel like the only "true next-gen" features to be advertised will be the DualSense support.

If you got a discount then yeah, you'd be crazy not to. Most people can't even get one. There's still plenty of full exclusives coming, just not this one - Ratchet & Clank absolutely will be, it's designed around the Dualsense and SSD. Or, shit, you could sell it now, make a big profit, and buy one back later when there's more available.

You got a source on that? The game as it is isn't designed around the idea of flying mounts whatsoever, if they intended to have them but discovered a limitation too late, they would have had to drastically redesign a lot of it.

yeah like wtf.. fuck jim ryan or whoever decided cross gen

I hate that it's cross-gen because of the missed potential, however with the ongoing ps5 shortage, it would be completely impossible to even play the game for all the people interested. How can you play the game if you can't get the console?

Really, personally I'd rather prefer if this game would release in 2022 as a PS5 exclusive.

Hope you’re wrong, even though you’re probably right

Heres the funny thing

You seems to take a dig at this game for being crossgen title but i dont see you crying over something similar like Resident Evil Village or Halo Infinite

Have you ever heard anything about engine scalability

Try playing Red Dead Redemption 2 on Xbox One and Xbox One X

Almost look like a totally different game ( and that was from a same generation xbox) from 1,1 tf to 6 tf

The leap in HFW between PS4 and PS5 will be even bigger ( 1,3 tf vs 10,4 tf)

This game on basic PS4 will probably have similar perfomance as Cyberpunk 2077 running on ps4/one

I don't care much about the Teraflops difference between the PS4 and the PS5. Same goes for the XB1 and the XSX. I'm much more interested in what both companies focused on for these next-gen consoles : data streaming. The difference in data streaming speed and efficiency between current-gen and next-gen consoles is absolutely staggering and I'm dreaming about what could be achieved when designing a game exclusively with these new solutions in mind.

Can't decide if I wanna go back and Plat HZD before this launches. I got very near to the very end but never actually finished it.

I am Day One for HFW. Wish it was next gen only but whatever, I'll take it.

Don’t From games disprove this?

Also, how would you design the fights in action adventure games without enemy patterns? Like every enemy has a set of attacks that they use and those attacks can be memorized by the players and countered, I don’t really see a way around it.

It's why single player games have been in such a rut. The same, safe, design patterns with weak AI.

It's why multiplayer engagements are so much more exciting.

Thinking "What would an actual person do in this position" is objectively superior to "What is the predictable AI going to do in this scenario."

Developers need to move past this outdated design philosophy.

From games are the same bad design with a simple gimmick attached. Smaller reflex windows and higher damage output from AI. It's still the same gameplay loop from 30 years back.
