That’s depressing, the questing and story was actually decent, too bad the endgame dissapointed so much. I was hoping they’d found a way to salvage it.

I really liked Anthem, but man these fucking guys are lying pricks. They lied through their teeth for almost 2 years refusing to update the current game with strikes and raids on the promise that a full reboot will come with the extra content.

Fuck EA. Fuck Bioware. Fuck Casey Hudson.

In an exclusive interview with IGN, EA chief studios officer Laura Miele offered her thoughts on the shuttering of Anthem development, contrasting the decisions EA had made in regards to the game's overhaul with those it made on Star Wars: Battlefront 2. Battlefront 2 was successfully overhauled post-launch based on community feedback, if not perhaps as dramatically as Anthem was planned to be.

"What’s really important about Battlefront 2 is we said we were going to do something," Miele explained. "We made a commitment to players and we needed to act on what we said we would do, so our teams are clear, if we publicly say we’re going to do something we must deliver. Creating new content for games can also come to a natural conclusion for various reasons and when that happens we try to be as transparent as we can with the community and explain why."

Miele then pointed to Battlefront 2's community post-launch as an example, saying that even though the game's community had asked for more post-launch content beyond what DICE was going to deliver, the studios were keeping that feedback in mind for future Star Wars games.

In contrast, while Anthem also had a community interested in its overhaul, Miele says that ultimately the best decision based on the resources BioWare has at their disposal was to focus development on its other games instead.

"We’ve believed in Anthem every step of the way, we’ve invested in this game for close to a decade and we’re proud of the work the team has done," Miele said. "Starting with the game’s launch two years ago, the team at BioWare has listened to player feedback and brought updates and improvements to the game.

"However, 2020 and 2021 are unprecedented years when it comes to game development, so we must prioritize both the player experience and what’s best for the people working on these games. We want to make sure BioWare is able to focus on making the next Dragon Age and Mass Effect games the best they can be, while also continuing to provide quality updates to [Star Wars: The Old Republic]. That’s ultimately the best way we can be in service to our players, focusing on these fan favorites and delivering on the communities’ expectations.

"Anthem was a creative risk and its challenges have taught us a lot about game design and even how we can improve our development process. This not only benefits developers, but players as well."

Miele talked at length about EA's relationship with its game communities and goals to adapt based on fan feedback in the rest of our interview as well, which you can read here.

It's crazy that EA even gave this game the time they did to try and "turn it around" when its entire design philosophy was broken from the get go.

They didn't plan out how to monetize and ended up with a looter game that had shit loot/terrible monetization strategies, no idea how to keep the tail going on the game, and no idea how to improve the system without hearing from players and then going "Shit can we do that?" for two years.

It's crazy to me that this game got the chance it did considering it plays to non of Bioware's strengths (back when they were good). You'd think theyd keep pumping out Javelin "stories" that help flesh out the world and result in cool javelins to play as or something akin to Warframe but they just never seemed to figure out what the fuck they were making.

This is a massive failure for EA/BioWare. The game was sub par to begin with, and when given time to turn it around they couldn’t.

Makes me wonder if Cyberpunk will have a similar fate.

Nah I give Cyberpunk a ton of shit for how it launched and what's in it, but CDPR would rather spend money (rightfully) on improving the game and making sure it works than to waste time for two years "maybe" updating and then calling it quits.

If anything the news of the delay of patch 1.2 being so clearly communicated today/recently and the supposed scale of said patch speaks to their attempts to fix it.

Granted a single player game is much easier to fix than a looter shooter and/or online multiplayer driven game with running systems, Bioware didn't have a set vision to begin with so it's hard to tell what could have happened to save Anthem. Cyberpunk at least has a vision, they just failed to execute on "all" of said vision.

Not surprised but still a shame.

I hope someone else takes the open world flight concept and does a better job building an actual game around it.

How does EA stay as big as they are? I'm completely out of the loop for what they brought to PS4 but all I've heard is negative feedback. I did buy Andromeda brand new at Target 2 years back for like $5, and it felt like a fanmod. I guess what I'm saying is, I'm surprised that anyone would be surprised about EA, considering their track record for the past decade. I stopped buying their stuff years ago when they dismantled Black Box and Visceral. They're like a black hole for talent.

Even though Bioware now isn't the same Bioware when the doctors were in charge, it's still an RPG studio at heart. And most of their RPG games are good.

How they got ordered to make a Gaas shooter for the first time that was planned as a long term cornerstone franchise who the hell knows.

Next up. Codemasters making a battle royale game.

At this stage they are BioWare in name only and their reputation is nosediving. I wouldn’t be at all surprised if they close down if Mass Effect and Dragon Age fail to deliver.

I cry about SonyGaf from my chair in Redmond, WA
I'm surprised they even keep it on life support.

I mean one month of server maintenance is probably more expensive than what they've earned on this.

Thanks for that, I figured it was related to Madden/Micro-Transactions, I didn't realize that Madden has micro-transactions but I'm not surprised that it does.

Man, I think that graph illustrates that people actively enjoy being hoodwinked but a truly awful developer/publisher. Bummer.

Oh thank god, now they can focus their resources on things that matter, for the next atrocity of a game that will incorporate everything from bad female models, woke culture, I'm pretty sure that you will be forced to play transgender character anyways, because you know that's the trend these days.

Shocked.

Tried to copy Destiny... failed miserably... not even the basics they got right.
Except they didn't. The developers had a standing order to avoid using destiny as a reference point as they knew people would compare them and they wanted anthem to be its own thing.

The preferred referens point at Bioware was actually Diablo 3 off all games.

Development even predated Destinys launch.

This has to be the biggest fuckup in recent times. Anthem was EA's posterchild and was planned to run for like a decade. It fell off a cliff in mere weeks after launch. Anthem was dead since then, but only kept around by hollow promises and things they were supposedly working on.

Thank god for betas. That made me not pre order it and stop giving a shit about it.

That’s a shame. Man the beta was so good. It launched and I heard so much bad stuff, I stayed away. Would have dove in with the relaunch.

Oh well, I have too much shit to play anyway.

Fighting a lost fight must have burned them out hard and since all key people responsible for the project left anyway moving all remaining manpower to Dragon Age for a fresh start sounds like a positive step forward for the studio

They indeed tried dozen of times to say they did were not copying Destiny except when they basically copied Destiny lol

EA was always clear they wanted their own Destiny and BioWare was clear about watching Destiny close.
