Nintendo reportedly buying Samsung OLED panels for a larger Switch/Switch Pro

max out that form factor by minimizing the bezels. so that the shape can stay the exact same and still fit in existing docks.
that's what they should do.

also joy cons WITH FULL SIZED STICKS! get rid of those god awful joy cons they have now!

edit: just saw that they're supposedly 720p... that is disappointing and doesn't give me hope that the new hardware is that much of an improvement in terms of performance. a 1080p screen would have been nice, with a mode that plays existing, unpatched Switch games in docked mode when using it porable. this would mean up to 1080p games in portable mode without any patches needed by developers.

but Nintendo is gonna Nintendo, so they will either do something really weird or they will just disappoint.
Summary of your post : make a proper console.

I still don't believe that Nintendo is going to put OLED in one their console.

The article creates a compelling case, especially as OLED 7inch rigid display prices have literally fallen off a cliff, combined with a more efficient panel that doesn’t drain the battery as quickly (they may not even have to increase battery size) - it’s a combo that sounds like a Nintendo wet dream.

but 720p is good for the screen size. 1080p will be overkill for the battery..i was hoping for 1440p in docked but this is great. cant wait to see Metroid 4, Breath of the wild 2, Bayonetta 3 and of course Open world Pokemon. Man the switch is looking great for Nintendo for the next 4yrs.

720p in portable mode is great news: native res, better battery life, and barely a noticeable difference at that size if you add decent antialiasing.

Expect docked 4k to be using a reconstruction technique for sure, be it DLSS or checkerboard like the PS4 pro.
This. 720p for portable is okay, especially with longer battery life.
DLSS in docked mode is a dream.

Based on what?

same thing has been said when the switch has been announced. Now it’s destroying everything saleswise.

I love nintendo games.

But they cannot get consecutive success. Cause whatever innovation they launch gets stale by the time they lauch next gen of the hardware.

All the casuals they roped in due to wow factor abandon it in droves.

On plus side it motivates Nintendo to bring in new innovation after abysmal failiure.

Its a cycle of doom. The Nintendo curse.

This is the DS play not the Wii play though.

The news don't make much sense to me.

Why would devs have different devkits if the console is still targeting the same 720p mobile / 1080p docked?

"4K output" seems like the most irrelevant part to me if the console is still using the same old TX1 chip, even if it's the refreshed Mariko.

The TX1 from 2015 always supported 4K output. Nintendo just decided to adopt a HDMI 1.4 port instead of the natively supported HDMI 2.0. It's a worthless feature for a chip of that processing power.
So unless it has revamped hardware (which doesn't seem likely due to the same 720p resolution), the HDMI 2.0 output is worthless and all we're looking at is an improved OLED panel.

Needs to be at 1080p min and a more powerful system,

thus the Switch 2 that can play Switch 1 games.
I agree with this because I like better graphics, but it is safe to assume that Nintendo will make it it's own way. I even like that more and more people enjoy switch and it's games "as it is".

I get that most people just want to play Switch on their 4k TV set without it looking actively terrible, but I will probably be skipping this. As I thought, this is similar to PS4 Pro. It plays the same library of games and won't have any exclusive content. Portable mode is boosted by a nicer screen. Docked mode is boosted by upscaled resolution.

I mostly use my Switch for exclusive games and tiny indies. I do most gaming on PC and don't even have a 4k TV yet. The irony is that the only console IPs that would motivate me to upgrade my TV are Nintendo. I mean sure if they blindside me with a real Zelda and no-BS StarFox, Metroid, F-Zero I would get it, AND the 4k TV to play them on. We will see what happens but if they get me to buy without waiting for Switch 2 it will be an accomplishment, especially for a Nintendo that has only released a single original must play title to me on the system so far (Odyssey). I played everything else on WiiU already. Maybe they will stack all their new games to align with Switch Pro, which would be a double insult -Wii U owners apparently got Switch to buy all the same games again, only for the new model to come out when they're finally ready to release some original games -if they are actually even worth writing home about.

TLDR: Give me some AAA Nintendo IP exclusive content to care about running in 4k and maybe then I'll give a damn. Till then all we have is an abusive relationship where they try to sell me a single real ass game per hardware through baiting and manipulation. LOL no.

P.S. Yes I know Switch library is far from anemic, but the only reason I buy Nintendo are for their first party IP, which except for like one game is all ports and remakes.

If the portable screen is 720p you shouldn't be expecting a DLSS 4k upscale from the console docked.
what has the screen got to do with dlss? it just means the hardware is rendering to 720p. if the console is docked the screen is bypassed. if the hardware can render a game at 540p then it can upscale to 1080p. if games can render at 1080p then it will upscale to 4K. if any games can do 1440p then you could play your switch on an 8K screen!

why is it?
it isn't. it's perfect for a 6-7" screen on a console that requires battery power.

people wanting 1080p screens would be the first to piss and moan about battery life. i'll take battery life over 1080p.

Why not both? With the technology we have today we can absolutely have a 1080p screen with more than adequate battery life. There's nothing wrong with being disappointed in a 720p screen. And considering they're talking about 4K while docked tells me that the system itself is capable (or should be) of more than 720p while on the go.
I dont want to pay more than 350 for this.

... The article flat out says this model is capable of 4K resolution docked... That's a huge improvement, likely thanks to DLSS.
Most likely it is just upscaled 720p-1080p.

Switch pro is max 20-30% faster than OG by knowing how greedy Nintendo is.

Anybody whom waits big improvements will be dissapointed

No, it's not, it's a damn portable console, do you want good battery life or a better screen?
Why not both? It's 2021. Smartphone screens don't have a big battery life penalty for screen resolutions, especially with the new high refresh rate panels.

It's all well and good having the flashy screen, but what's under the hood is what I am more interested in...

Just like form the 3DS to new 3DS

As one of the six people who own a New 3DS, I probably won't be buying a New Switch. What a colossal waste of time.

Of course they will use a 720p screen. OLED looks better than a standard LCD anyways, or has anyone forgot how nice the Vita looked with a resolution of 480p? This isn't a next gen switch, and this business decision is the only way to keep cost low..

Apparently rumours also point to more immersive tech....Could we see Nintendo's version of dual sense, better motion control plus the AR from MK circuit? Im curious to see how broad the upgrades go while still being compatible with OG Switch.

Would also be cool if these innovations were backed up with Wii Sports remakes and a new souped up Ring Fit.

The thing better be fully backwards compatible and allow you to transfer your library over. If it doesn't then I won't buy until the library is a compelling upgrade .

Didn't Nintendo deny having any new Nintendo Switch model recently?
They said last month they had nothing to announce. If this isn't starting production until June then we won't get an announcement until Summer.

It's very likely to have upgraded internals as well, not just a new screen and DLSS.

I have had 2 big boy versions and a lite currently sitting at my desk, but i dont know why but an achievement or trophy system would make me more inclined to purchase a new version. But doubt that would happen as if it was to run the older switch 1 games, i think that is a given and would be a silly mistake to make by Nintendo if it didnt. The developers are not going to patch in trophies. But they had to start somewhere like sony did.

Maybe call it Jewels or something.

It is useless, but you can slap a stupid 4K output bullet on the box and maybe get a few people to upgrade. What is the name going to be? Switch XL? It better not be Pro. I fucking hate the use of Pro/professional for a fucking product. It is pathetic. What the fuck is a Professional console? Or a fucking professional phone/tablet. It is moronic.
