I joined GAF a bit later and was not informed that those members (who are now inactive or banned) had a private circle jerk going on in Discord. They should have just left that crap all over in Discord and kept it out of GAF entirely. But yeah, you're absolutely right - Gashtronomy (or whatever his original user name was) intimidated them with the creation of the Virgin GAF thread. They couldn't even keep quiet long enough for it to make 2-pages. The more common accusations -- which you omitted -- were some flavor of "misogynistic", whether that was because GAFers were still posting on a forum run by someone who [redacted accusation] or because people called out so-called "SJW agenda" in journalism and/or in videogames. The other common accusation was and still is "racism", where prominent members have blundered into threads, waved around the "you're a racist" wand, and later turned out to be wrong. Being called a racist on the internet is about as meaningful as being called an n word on the internet, so it's not like I'm complaining, just describing.
Y'know, the last few pages of this thread really shine a light on who is a GAFer and who is hastily putting on the mask. If nothing else, there's a clear distinction between posters who are trying to rubber-glue a new narrative to the wall and posters who actually remember the events of the last 12 months.
This thread -- this specific thread we're in -- was in many ways the "ground zero" for the gatekeeping and cliquishness.
If you didn't happen to know, go back to page 200-300-ish and see how it progressed from there to its current state. Spoiler alert: it's identical to how people are acting in the thread over the past month, just a shuffle of names and political leanings, but the same exact behavior.
Those of you who are now showing up to snatch up the new Meta OT mantle missed this little detail because... well... it's obvious you're just moving into the same territory where the old clique rose to prominence. Oops. Masks slipping again, but no one cares enough anymore.
Merely read back through this thread -- this specific thread we're in -- and you can easily see how this went from a "talk about GAF itself" thread to a "throw in metacommentary to annoy the OP" thread... slowly evolving over time until certain members turned it into a Dear Diary thread where select members would whine about how Nintendo was treated unfairly, or how SonyGAF needed to be put in its place, or how certain members were acting, or how people needed to act as bouncers (e.g. Matt404's cyberbully mantra, which Arcadia picked up and ran with) or some such thing.
Confronting the clique resulted in me getting shrieked at. You can read it yourself:

I disagree that cool and collected = thinker. Nobody is more collected than Nobody_Important, yet, nobody would think that suggesting him as a profound thinker was anything but nonsense. But in case I'm coming across as trying to take credit, the inadvertent author of the VirginGAF OT (currently edited out of existence) called THESE MEMBERS OUT, a month before I started to notice, and months before the election results and months before the meltdowns.
Did the staff take note? No. The staff enshrined the post as a joke that should be made fun of.
Now we have trolls trying to re-write history and insert themselves as grieving members of the community. The hypocrisy on display, while obnoxious, is also a pretty good way of shitting on the old clique, I'll admit. The trolls they labored to keep out through sheer muscle and intimidation are now dancing on their graves.
But since GAF is apparently moving away from shitting-on-others threads that spiral and spiral, I wonder how much valuable content these new rising stars will actually contribute to the forum.
As I have mentioned twice already, this history of this very thread tells us the trajectory of those posters. Thankfully, the future of the forum didn't rest on the shoulders of the clique that formed in this thread, nor will it rest on the shoulders of those quickly hurrying into their places. But the forum does need shoulders to rest on, which appears to be the present concern that people are raising.
My thoughts are that as some of them didn't delete their accounts is that they might return and try to reform. Those key figures that were part of their cult may just jump in here under an alt and start that crap again. It's not my site - but rest assure...if I was in moderation and saw a sub-group or click...err...clique forming; I would temp them in a quick sweep and wrote this as ban reason: "You're smart. You've worked with PHP, mySQL, and participles of JavaScript...create your own magical forum where those mean lefties and newbs can't touch you and enjoy your arachistic echo chamber. Or, get your s*** together and disperse if you want to be part of this community. Take 2 and come back if you're ready to knock off the juvenille clubhouse act."
A theory: mods don't act on them right away because they've been here much longer than these cliques and have seen them take care of themselves. Eventually, they'll become so high-minded that they simply won't be willing to stand that someone else (other than themselves) actually operates GAF and they'll write a long winded 'I'm going' message like Arcadia or simply write the mods and close account (which, again is what most of them ended up doing).

Granted you have no visibility because your account got locked out of Politics, but if you access the site with your browser in incognito mode it’ll be as if you were an unregistered member and will be able to read it. And if you do you’ll see yourself gaf still has a sizeable conservative community and in fact most of the threads are posted from a conservative viewpoint.
The difference between then and now is that instead of Breitbart it’s more like Fox News. Do you really think that people spamming the board with Tom Clancy style conspiracies about Trump declaring martial law and sending the entirety of the democrat party to prison made for healthy discussions?
At least now most of the threads are about actual things that happened or are happening.

GAF before the schism had mods running rampant with grudges (Something EL personally addressed).
However the moderation here seems pretty fair and when the ban appeal thread was open many got second chances and just abused it.
