These two games were the biggest rpgs of the late 90's, whether you owned them or skipped them, people were talking about them everywhere, and their impact could be felt whether either added much to the genre or not. They had mind share that other rpgs of the time just couldn't pull off, reaching beyond gaming.

Both games are also among the highest rated rpgs of 5th gen, with Diablo receiving a 94% and Final Fantasy VII receiving a 92% on Metacritic. What's crazier is both were released within a year of each other giving gamers two big hits to play.

I rarely hear these two giants of the genre compared though. If you're going to strangely compare Persona to Skyrim I think you'll have less contrast by comparing FFVII and Diablo, both the biggest rpgs of the late 90's.

Which wins best game in your opinion?

Diablo has more replay value. FFVII is more story-focused and flashier in a lot of ways. I'd still give the edge to Diablo as to which I'd rather play today.
The first diablo, even though it was the foundation to a lot of CRPGs to this day, is lacking a lot of things that D2 improved upon. It's not even fair to compare the two.

FF7 was groundbreaking back then.

I absolutely loved playing D1, never played D2, and kind of didn't really like D3.

So tell me, what is improved on in D2 and what is D3 missing that D2 had?

If we take out the improvements on story, gameplay, item and skill variety, replayability, classes, graphics and the sheer amout of things to do?
It's almost the same game.

Seriously now, if you liked D1 at least get the D2 resurrected. It's D1 improved on every single aspect.

I can't believe that you loved D1 and never played D2. It's like liking Street Fighter one and never playing Street Fighter 2.

I love the Diablo Franchise however as far as I remember Diablos Story ( which in my opinion is the most important part of an RPG) got good due to Diablo 2.

So if we compare D1 vs FF7 i can only pick FF7.

However I wouldn't actually agree calling Diablo an RPG. Its a hack 'n slay with a good enough story and really good gameplay.

Apples and Oranges. I think FF7 is a better game than Diablo 1. If you put D2 in there than this would be a far harder question.

Why would you even bother with a topic like this when you know what the overwhelming answer will be? The reason why they aren’t comparable is because they are so different aside from the “RPG” label, and the level of success of FF7 was off the charts compared to D1.

I think it was just the timing of its release and things happening in my life. Everyone who loved D2 was playing it online whereas I had primarily played D1 solo or I played it multiplayer on console.

This forum is unpredictable, in another board FF7 lost by the same margin. But there's a consistent theme that promotes predictability, not here, everyone has strange tastes and it's always amusing.

I loved both games.

Everything about Diablo speaks to the inner essence of my soul. I love the gothic vibes, the music, and how dark and grim everything is.

Final Fantasy 7 did almost everything right. Engaging story. Great soundtrack. Fun battle sequences with catchy tunes and fanfare music. Traverse the world. Mini-games. Side challenges. Side bosses. Epic attacks that appear to shake up the entire world.

Final Fantasy 7 is like that catchy pop song with the dance moves to go along with it--it's so dang catchy and every cute girl you know is doing those dance moves when the song comes on. Meanwhile, Diablo is that other awesome song that's topping the billboards from that one goth band everyone knows about--everyone agrees their song is awesome but it'll never match that pop song with the dance moves.

Diablo, actually good gamedesign, boring story
FFVII, dull gamedesign, good story

choose your poison. as as someone who wouldn't touch either I would take Diablo any day over FFVII if I had to choose between them

Diablo is terrible, so that's an easy one. FFVII. Even though FFVII is a huge step back from FFVI and Chrono Trigger before.

D2 vs ff7 would be a better match, but d1? Yeah it’s not even in the same league as FF7 in terms of impact, value or just pure good fun.

I am biased though, FF7 is the best game ever created in my eyes. D2 is up there too, as is BG2.

Diablo has an incredible atmosphere and tone, but a lot of its systems aren't quite there yet. It's remembered for what it did well, but there's a reason its sequel basically replaced it outright.

FFVII is, for some folks, the high point of the Final Fantasy series to this day. Its battle system is pretty great, its characters are memorable, and its story is the real deal. Its world is interesting, and although it becomes little more than scripted sequences for hours at a time, it was a revolution when it released. It's certainly my personal favourite, I'm playing through it again on my XSX as we speak actually, though that's mostly for nostalgia.

Diablo because it defined the action RPG to what it is today. without it, we probably would have something else.
FF7 is solid too, but I suppose it was big because of the graphics. I remember playing it in 2000 and it was awesome. back to back with ff8, ff9, then i played ff7 last. just imagine, i had so many jrpgs to play. what an experience.

This topic is essentially comparing Command and Conquer to Battlefield. They may have the same end goals but they are very much different beasts.

Diablo is a point and click adventure... I have literally no interest for it, tried it back in the 90s (on a P Pro 200 no less) and it seemed so boring to me, it's all about grinding and killing that red demon at the end.

And the randomly generated levels, what a shame.

What…? They are two completely different games. Like not even close. They may both be RPGs but they are so fundamentally different they may as well be different genres.

The term RPG is so generic anyway. Rarely do JRPGs and WRPGs have anything in common gameplay wise let alone CRPGs and JRPGs.

OKAY guys let’s settle this ONCE AND FOR ALL

What’s better - Gex: Deep Cover Gecko or Space Station Silicon Valley.

Let’s finally put this one to bed boys!!!

That's all you do, you click the ground, you click the interface to move icons around, you click the ennemies continuously to attack them, etc.

Click click click click....
Diablo is an Action RPG with a heavy focus on real-time combat, class and stat-based character building and item collection.

Point-and-click adventure games (and adventure games as a whole) generally do not have any combat mechanics at all and instead heavily rely on exploration and the solving of puzzles for story progression. They also do not feature character classes, stats, experience points, level-ups or equipable items.

Games like Monkey Island, Broken Sword or The Longest Journey are examples of Point-and-click adventure games. Diablo and other games like it are not.

How many hours do you have to spare?

I think in terms of actual "role playing," I'd give the edge to Diablo 1, as that had actually distinct roles, versus just various party members.
But in terms of character customization and options for variable playthroughs, FF7 did damn well. I think I'd give it the edge in terms of actual character options, but it loses in terms of gear and items.
It's a very close contest.

They are totally different games...

Diablo has more replayability, but this isn't a fair comparison I'd say.
