And thereby breaking another record.

Via Google Translate:
The Sony Group held a general meeting of shareholders in Tokyo on the morning of the 22nd. President Kenichiro Yoshida said, "We would like to accelerate the supply of the PlayStation (PS) 5" home video game console, which continues to be in short supply, and achieve annual sales of more than 22.6 million units, which is the largest ever in the history of PS. Emphasized. Against the backdrop of demand for "Nesting", we aim to break the sales record of the first PS in 1998.

Question is, will they be able to meet demand?

Bold claim, considering major problems with Playstation right now is their gaming price. Unless people consider it like Apple products, I doubt they can sell that number.

This isn't the same gen as last time, where your competition where tv tv tv tv. They are offering a solid software subscription, during a pandemic age, where everyone is having issues with money. While Sony does the 70$ price tag for their games.

I am not bashing Sony here. The reality is gaming is expensive right now. And not everyone is working like last gen. We are in economic crisis. People can't afford to spend 70$ easily. Especially, when their sale in 6 month is 61$ (that was demons souls sale). Unless they offer sales, or some kinda offer, they won't reach their goal. They need something like gamepass to achieve it.

What are you on about? People seem quite happy to pay for quality.

That doesn't make any sense considering people are going nuts trying to pay $500 at a minimum for a PS5.

and yet their products are completely sold out and people are buying from scalpers which can be up to 3 times the price.

Sony will have zero problems selling that amount, their consumers want their products.

Quality is the name of the game, and Sony offers it in spades.

That’s kinda crazy, isn’t it? How much has Switch sold per year?

But the demand is either through the roof or scalper bots are buying everything in sight. I’ve never experience something like this before, 7 months after launch and the supply online retailers have is gone in minutes or even seconds each time they have a new batch.
I managed to buy one today though, Yay! Ratchet, Returnal, Demon’s Souls here we go!

Not sure where you live, and no offense to anyone here.....but in the US we are not in an economic crisis. In fact the economy has been growing steadily, and quite honestly, Covid is on the outs with more and more people being vaccinated. I think the Country as a whole has over 60% vaccinated (i may be wrong on that % but its high). The $70 price tag argument is also quite tiring. Noone is forcing anyone to upgrade to next gen, and there are plenty of options for those who choose to, or can't at this time for whatever reason. Newsflash lol, gaming as a hobby has always been expensive when you factor in the console, games, good tv, etc....your reasons for downing this topic don't make any sense and are way out there. Regardless of if it's PS5, PS4, PS4 Pro, Sony is killing it.

They need to break into even more mainstream if they want to achieve that.

PS5 Digital Slim edition at $199 is needed.

I get it, who reads the op? The thread title is enough. The CEO has told the shareholders they will hit that target by the end of next fiscal year.

It does not mean it will sell that amount per year till the end of the console cycle.

Kinda a bit too ambitious for it's first year. I think they would have a better chance to do it in Year 2 onwards.

Pretty straightforward to me. Per year means every year till generation lasts.

And the install base talking point to justify cross gen games is dead :messenger_beaming: Never made any sense to me tbh.

Don't think so. Seems to be clearly a case of being able to have your cake and eat it too. PS5 has unprecedented demand despite some games being cross gen. Cross gen hasn't hindered PS5 so from purely an economic standpoint, continuing to make games available to PS4 makes perfect sense.

Microsoft could create the best console ever but Europe and Japan will still go with Sony.

thats insane and way more than i expected so early. peak is usually at year 3-4 of console lifecycle. theres really no doubt about it anymore that PS5 will breeze past the PS4 total units sold. with covid extending the generation on top of that, PS5 will be a genuine contender for the PS2's no1 spot imo.

And by sold they mean produced. Because to live in the early years of the 21th century is to live in the cruelest and most bloody market imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of technology and science, for so much has been stagnated, never to be regained. Forget the promise of progress and understanding, for in the grim darkness of the present there is only shortage.

I’m gonna repost because it’s very much in line with this post.

If the pandemic is hurting your ability to buy gaming related items then you shouldn’t be gaming in the first place and figure out why an extra 10 dollars or a forced console bundle from GameStop or Best Buy is breaking the bank for you.

I canceled my original PS5 pre order because Gap laid off huge chunks of our IT department in the middle of COVID because finding a new job was my top priority.

When I got a new gig with the government I was able to then think “Ok, awesome! I can find another pre order without the guilt of a gaming console purchase hanging over my head.” Even if I immediately paid it off on my credit card.

People need a PS5 and 70 dollar games or a Series X/S and 15 bucks a month on Gamepass like they need a hole in the head. Your money would be better off saved in a bank account or buying a retro console, hacking it and pirating (not that I’m encouraging it) all the games you’d be interested in if budget was really of that much concern.

This whole argument is dumb.

The only ones who have a problem with the price are folks on gaming forums. No one who is buying a 400 or 500 dollar machine is doing a spit take at an extra 10 bucks on top of their games purchases.
