Mark Cerny reveals the M.2 SSD he bought for his PS5

Which begs the question if you can use the expansion bay and an external drive. PS5 doesn't allow you to connect two externals. I've got a 4TB for cold storage for PS5 games and an active 4TB drive for PS4 games.
Yes. 3 total storage locations on PS5. Internal SSD, M.2 SSD, and external USB. Users can choose where to install games.

Honest question for those looking into expanding the storage: do you swap between games a lot? Or do you just like having there, in case you want to play them?

I'm someone who only plays one game at a time, finishes it, and plays something else. I'll delete as I go along.
There are some fighting games that i wont delete because i play once a week a least.

I also have rdr2 cause I play red dead online sometimes too. It's 110 GB.

This remind me what's up with that feature to allow to delete partial datas of some games that cerny talked about before, that will improve a lot this storage case.

It should ask you per install, on both XSX and PS5 it is a bit messy (moving over to external HDD does not work if you turn the TV off for me and unless you force all downloads to occur on the secondary drive you need to finish the install and move after).

of course WD. They have a commercial agreement.
WD also sells "GAME DRIVES" for years which are just normal usb drives
it also looks killer, and in this world names and symbols, appearances rule, such is divine rule.

The great chain of being is a hierarchical structure of all matter and life, thought by medieval Christianity to have been decreed by God. The chain begins with God and descends through angels, humans, animals, and plants, to minerals.[1][2][3]

The Great Chain of Being (Latin: scala naturae, "Ladder of Being") is a concept derived from Plato, Aristotle (in his Historia Animalium), Plotinus and Proclus.[4] Further developed during the Middle Ages, it reached full expression in early modern Neoplatonism.[5][6]

It usually goes on offer at various places for £180, it's what I ended up getting mine for. I can see them reducing it to that permanently to be honest. A years premium at £220, then price match on the storage albeit not performance matched. I'm just wondering if an SN850 is really worth the extra, 1.2TB should be enough on the PS5 I think so a 500GB model makes more sense and is just over £100 here.
I think even 2 TB of local storage to by quickly, even though devs are now seemingly trying to optimise for storage more. I do have a 5 TB regular HDD connected to the PS5 as cold backup, but I would like to have a bit more big games on the device. 2 TB SSD is way too much at that price, but 1 + 0.825 TB is close enough. The drive should match PS5’s internal and then some.

The only thing I'm finding annoying on both consoles is the inability to have 'stored' games. Games I just want the bulk of the data stored but i don't want them to auto update because they aren't in active rotation. It sounds small but when you have like 30 games stored it can be a pain in the ass. As far as I can see there's not a way to stop auto update on either for certain games?

It's kinda bad the HVD, Holographic Versatile Disc, seems to have failed. That stuff was rumored to hold 1TB, and once scaled in R form would likely cost like 10 cents per disc. The only real issue was limited bandwidth, but it could have served as a nice physical backup solution.

This is smart. I was thinking of doing the same, I'll only be using PS5 strictly for the exclusives, so an entire 1.2TB should be plenty for that purpose.

Yeah same for me, I just want a bit more than I have now in my 1 TB PS4 Pro.

So 667 GB internal SSD + ~ 500 GB M.2 SSD = over 1 TB of SSD for PS5 games. Then I'll use my same 2 TB USB HDD for PS4 games.

The WD SN850 heatsink model is $140 right now on Amazon US for 500 GB. And it'll get cheaper than that later on.

What ever happened to the archival disc (AD)?
don't know, at least we have the superman memory crystal in labs and some universities, that is far more important I've wanted it for many years, but it ain't available to the public.

Estimate of 13.8 Billion year memory lifespan, iirc, quartz based memory. Imagine not just your immediate descendants, but perhaps other civilizations would see the story of your life. People do not know the power of science, if you are remembered, you exist forever, for with enough technology even death can be reversed. If your art or thought eventually become sought after you become sought after, and in the distant future what becomes art is a matter of opinion(From canned shit, to crucifixes in jars of urine, to random paint blotches, there is always a fan or zealot for something in the world of zeal, the perfect world of the ideal future)

You dont need external storage when you have fast internet, just delete and re-download as required. This just seems like PR/advertising.
Maybe for people paying more with digital purchases - as the download I presume is always fully patched, pre-download - but for those with optical, it is a slow reinstall first, then hours of patching to reinstall CoD single player - if just keeping it installed to demonstrate to friends, when meeting up, when the pandemic situation allows for wide-spread catch up with less risk

You probably have HDMI link on, which sends your PS5 to sleep mode when you turn the TV off.
Try disabling HDMI Link.
Yeah, still I would think that on both XSX and PS5 the system could resume it in background mode. It can do that for remote app updates and game downloads.

And yet they won’t take responsibility for any M2 drive that meets the specs not working as expected after installation. That’s why people have to rely on Cerny’s Twitter feed to decide which SSD to buy. It’s not just poor customer service, it may be creating unfair competition between suppliers.

As a consumer, I’m very disappointed. They botched this whole storage solution. I’d rather pay more for a plug and play stick that is guaranteed to maintain the same performance as the internal storage.

It's not even live yet, it's in beta. Maybe you should wait until the feature is actually available before you start crying about how they aren't telling you exactly which drive to get. There will be a list.

I think the post seems to be a generic “genuine concern” post, started talking about how much uncertainty there is (in a thread where the PS5 Lead System Architect is telling you what he is buying, just to add more irony to it) and ends the post with a not too veiled plug for XSX proprietary storage solution and how so much more pro consumer it supposedly is 🤷‍♂️.

Almost like... It's in beta.

Have a couple of WD Black external drives already for my consoles and not had any issues with them.
I'll likely order one of the SSDs pretty soon although I've not really had any issues transferring from an external drive via the PS5s 10Gbps USB. Moving forwards my setup will probably be to add a 1TB internal drive, have my library of PS5 on an external SSD, my PS4 library on an external magnetic drive just for the capacity and whatever active PS4 I'm playing on the internal SSD.
The really positive thing about using standard M2 is that as prices drop and the number of games grow I can swap it out for a larger drive and just add the old M2 drive to my PC or Mac. With M2 drives you can also use them as external drives and use them as external drives via an adapter and still get fantastic speeds on anything with 10Gbps USB.

not too bad, 250 for 1TB for this drive...if its good enough for Cerny, i'm gonna go with that one
The good thing is that since it's an open standard and not a propietary storage, over time more and more companies will develop compatible SSDs, and the prices will drop.

Now they may be too expensive, but in a few years they will be very affordable.
