30 dollars ... a year. This is nothing
This is why companies love subscription services. It's much easier to exploit gullible people.

It's strange how so many Americans find themselves in money trouble after having so many monthly fees, many they've forgotten they're paying for in the first place. Math tells me that "Nothing" multiplied by 50 is still Nothing. Yet, for some reason, it doesn't work out that way. Strange.

Why don't they sell nes/snes/n64 games standalone? I don't even mind buying overpriced roms, its nintendo afterall. But why should I pay monthly annually? Just sell me the rom.
Profit maximizing, that's why. Most people would buy just two or three of their favorite classics, paying a small sum once. With a subscription you force them to pay annually.

Oh, Nintendo... the level of surprise is too damn low!

There are four of us in the house who play Animal Crossing, and the expansion by itself is like £22, so this seems pretty decent in comparison as with the family deal we would all get the expansion, plus the N64 games and stuff for £70, but it sort of sucks none of us would own the DLC and lose access to it down the line if we ever downgraded. It sounds like the plan is that this "pass" would get you every expansion pass for the year, so possibly all the Smash Bros DLC, Splatoon expansion, whatever Metroid DLC they announce down the line etc; if that's the case it's justified but they need to communicate that better. What we know we're getting is pretty thin, and if you don't care about Animal Crossing (you monster!) it's downright terrible as there is no cheaper option just for the N64 games.

I found it funny how much they went on about basic emulation stuff like saving anywhere and rewinding, is the general gaming audience so unaware of retroarch that hearing this is a selling point for this service?

I hope they keep the lower tier for online play or it will hurt games like Splatoon 3.

As for this expansion pack I think these future included DLCs will tell if it's good value or not.

There's a difference between expensive and overpriced. 150% yearly price increase for a few 20-30 year old games that have already been re-released a thousand times definitely classifies as the latter.
It's not a price increase, it's just "the price." This part of the service has not existed before and the old one isn't going away, nor has it's price changed.

Those N64 games would likely all be 10-15 dollars (if not more) on their own on the e-shop too so ...

Not sure I'm gonna do it. I don't need the games as I've played them all many times before but if I do, 30 bucks isn't even dinner for two for one night. It's just not even something worth thinking about.

lol ... Are you assuming I have money trouble, or that it would come from monthly fees? I will rephrase, "for me, 30 dollars a month is nothing."

I'm far from gullible. I hate subscription services, and I hate that software is going that direction. That's why I rail against Game Pass trying to replace paid games. If Nintendo were doing that I would be complaining. This is a completely optional, very cheap, service. If you want that back catalogue, you're getting a decent amount of games. Like I said, probably wouldn't do it.

Still think the complaining is dumb. It's like going into a store and complaining about the price of something I have no interest in buying, even though it's not expensive. People would tell me to beat it. I honestly thought the service would be an additional 15-20 a year. So it ended up a bit more than I thought. And like I said, who cares. If that extra couple dollars a year is burdensome you shouldn't be on a game board, and instead working hard to improve your life.

I wouldn't do something financially stupid for video games, ever.

So this is a really interesting concept to me and could be incredible value if Nintendo keeps adding content.

My wife and kids watched the AC direct, and want to play the new content. At $25 a pop that would cost me $75 total to get it for the three AC players in the house. Or I could just upgrade our online plan for $45 more and save money and get other little bonuses. So for at least this coming year I can justify the upcharge.

If they keep adding expansion packs and content that I want to this plan, and it ultimately saves me money, then I'll keep it going. If they don't I'll simply drop back down to the standard plan. I did the same for PS+ after it's first amazing year, and then when all subsequent years were filled with western shovelware.

Do you OWN the Animal Crossing DLC or do you lose access to it if you cancel your NSO membership? If you factor in the $25 for the DLC it's not a horrible deal for the first year. $5 more for N64 games. Still not appealing to me but I think it's a decent price for someone who isn't subscribing currently and is going to buy the Animal Crossing DLC. I guess there are online elements in the DLC that you would need NSO for.

They're $10 a piece on Wii U right now for N64 games. Genesis games were like $30 for all of them in that insane compilation they released a few years ago.

You're right that $30 isn't changing anyone's life, but I just am unusually let down with the service as is. Some of those NES games are so bad I wouldn't take them for free. Announcing that you double the cost of anything is also bad. This is more than doubling.

In general, it's bad. If you just don't care though and wanted to play some of these classics, I get it. Not the end of the world for me either way. It's a very skippable option if people don't want it.

So with the family plan everyone gets the DLC? That's a pretty good deal then in that type of situation. But do you get to keep the DLC when/if you cancel your subscription?

Are they out of their fucking mind??

I can't believe i'm gonna say this, but i would prefer the wii / wii U virtual console than this shit. How did they fuck up such a simple concept is beyond me. They just had to do a netflix for old games at a reasonable price, that's it!

From what I gathered from the video that's how it looks to work, we will have to wait for more details to confirm that though.

I also am very curious what happens to your DLC if you let your subscription run out, my assumption is you just now own it forever but who knows. How would they even control that given the way this AC expansion pack integrates with your main game? I can't see it retroactively removing all your upgrades, recipes, ect that you integrated into your main island.

Rom sites are getting shut down for this?

Jesus Nintendo. I really thought they'd have something better by now when the Switch decided to kill off the virtual console. I was one of the fools who praised what the idea could become.

Their online service is absolutely dreadful in general and this is just the icing on the cake.

They really need to get out of their own way before their next console shits the bed.

Pretty bad deal. Nintendo’s online service is pitiful as it is just for $20 a year for barebones basics and super basic online multiplayer. $50 just to play some old N64 and Genesis games is grasping at straws.

It's not a bad price for what you get. Most people in the gaming community will decry it because a year of gamepass ultimate is only $1 more (if gold converted) and they've heard of Switch homebrew. Everyone else is opening their wallets.

Lol. Nintendo is so out of touch in these aspects that is not even funny anymore.

But I'm sure Nintendo fans will be happy. Same as they were happy for voice chat through smartphone...

So, 20 dollar online is staying and people are up in arms over an optional upgrade? What is the big deal?

I get more out of this than I would from PlayStation plus or Xbox Live Gold. Only service that beats it out is GamePass but no one has a competitor to that yet.

Online works and I never used (or have seen most people use) the “features” offered via competitors. Almost everyone just uses Discord anyway for messaging and voice chat these days.

I can’t even remember the last time I gave a shit about a PsPlus game or Xbox Gold game. Meanwhile I play most of the NES and SNES library. Now I also get N64, Genesis, and a lab expansion to a great game, all for 5 bucks more than I would have paid for thr DLC alone.

My post or Nintendo's ridiculous price hike? :messenger_tears_of_joy:

The price. All of it actually. So is this Nintendo's version of PS+ or Xbox Live Gold? If so, how many people are cool with not getting current gen games on it? Like I'm confused. Your post was perfect.

Just nonsense, isn't it. The service barely offers value as is (and that's at my current price of £18 a year) are N64 and Mega Drive games really driving value for consumers? Fucking Nintendo man, they've got people over a barrel I swear.

Also, sorry for having to question what you were referencing, I'm clearly struggling with context!

It’s just an optional upgrade. Unless you really want to play N64/Genesis, you don’t have to upgrade. You can still do everything you did before at thr 20 USD mark.

Not even any kind of commitment to a steady release schedule of games with this new overview, just “over time”. Absolutely unbelievable. That’s the BARE fucking minimum I hoped for! I don’t want to “look forward to what games coming next“ at some undetermined time.
