ERA Member: I support a community where everyone is compensated for their work, where there are no greedy acquisitions and I condemn the rich for becoming richer at the expense of others who toil for free.
Also ERA Member: I too, would have taken the 4.5 million and run as well. No hate there.

What a bunch of spineless hypocrites.
In terms of moderation's position, ERA is a leftist forum and then turns around to be a capitalist that exploited free labor. Hypocrites indeed.

Finally caught up. Took me several days, lol. My theory is that Cerium is still communicating with the mods on their private discord, assuring them that he’ll be back to answer all their questions soon. In the meantime, he’s instructing them to continue supporting him while gathering all the questions asked so he can address them. But in reality, he’s just waiting for the check to clear so he can block all of them and forget about it.

And why wouldn’t they? It’s obvious from their fanatical posts that they have a serious case of Stockholm syndrome. This guy got them to work for free with the promise of a community with no owner. He exploited them. He also gave them random loans and “checked in” on them to keep their loyalty. And now promises are all they have to cling onto. It’s genius.

That’s just a theory though. This has been fun to watch. I’ve been lurking for several years and only made an account after NeoGAF starting picking up again. I got to see everything go down, and I’m happy to be a part of the finale.

The user count takes into account banned users as well….the active users actually didn’t grow for 3 years (based on when the banbot was grabbing that data) but last time I looked it was nudging on 25k banned users and that was only 12 months ago

the banned users didn’t log perma bans and many of the bans were just temp ones but that doesn’t make it any better that you have banned almost half your userbase at some point

it’s basically the same trash sitting around shrieking to each other
Literally almost half the users are banned?

I never really liked the ban tag. Because whenever I saw a user banned, I'd go to their post history to try and find why there were banned. I was addicted to it. And most of the time, the bans were stupid.

Oh, that's rich coming from you, 'mister' Redfield. Spent decades telling us what a shitshow Umbrella was, forced Spencer and Wesker to 'step down' (and don't tell me that wasn't you, I've seen the youtube videos on the volcano) ... and NOW you're a head honcho over at Umbrella? Calling the shots?

Guess hypocrites gotta stick together, huh.

I have like 6 I think. I never counted. I don’t use them though aside from my main account. I still go there like one or twice a month just to discuss games. I learned to never just go into a contentious thread after I saw how fucked up they managed AsianEra which I’m part of. Was part of.

Spineless and embarrassed they got taken for a ride. For a site that calls business owners greedy and all workers should get paid, you'd think these mods would be the first ones to complain about getting their free work compensated.

Now if Cerium sold the site for $450,000 and the site didnt really make any profits from year to year, they'd all be gloating their free work made the site happen as it barely scraped by in 4 years..... "See gamers, it's us unpaid volunteers that keep the site working".

But with public knowledge it made big annual profits lately + $4.5M buy out, it looks bad on them coming out and saying they should had gotten a piece of the pie because it would be admitting they got hooped by the very kind of owner they hate. And for 4 years too.

You can tell they want some of it as some of the mods have admitted they would had taken payment if offered. So their virtuous Mother Teresa work isn't so free and ethical after all if Cerium offered some of his bag of cash.

Nice Indian gentlemen in the gig economy sell me batches of pre-approved accounts for $5. I feel this is a more ethical use of their time than Apple Gift Card scamming. so it's a win for everyone involved.

I cant wait to see the mod's new stance on payment going forward.

At least with Cerium, those numbnuts could play the ignorance game and claim they never knew about the wad of profits and they agreed to be a free mod from 2017.

Now that MOBA is the new owner, a corporation out for profits and MOBA is way bigger than Cerium (and even a publicly traded company on the Stockholm index), let's see if they want to stick it to the man and demand payment.

Or their preaching of "all workers should be paid a good wage" is spineless and they work for free again.

New owner. New policies can be set. Ball is in their court, not MOBA's. MOBA will just keep riding out free workers forever unless they speak up.

I made it during the migration. The site requires you to use a paid email but I found a workaround by using protonmail. I reported it to the mods. The only thing I did in those accounts is post a bunch of nonsense to pad my post count to be able to create threads.

That’s what remember password is for. Besides, I never bothered remembering them cause I don’t use them anyway. I just vaguely remember the usernames. If I really want to know then it’s probably saved on my phone or tablet’s account manager thingy that saves your username and password.

last time the banbot was showing the total bans it was nearly 20k ....i remember this because i was going to present a special plaque using one of my Ree alts but the thread here was shut down and by the looks of it
they stopped showing the graphs on the banbot site

I stopped paying attention to Ree after that but the numbers would be right...they have banned probably half their userbase at some point ...most of these are temp bans but quite alot are permas
but its still a pretty laughable number and when you looked at the unique active users count...you would expect it to grow in 3 years if the member count was going up (back then) it didn't and was going backwards

i actually expect when the implosion happens they are simply going to migrate over to somethingawful.com which has been taken over by similar nutjob mods
they actually outed the owner and permabanned him and took the site over and started cleaning house with all the people they didnt like

Who was the worst old mod of GAF?

besada
Bishoptl
Amir0x
Dragona Akehi

Cheers to the other old-school GAF heads who remember these names, may they be cursed for all eternity.
Screaming Matt Damon GIF

Obviously Amir0x

though Bish and Dragona had all the acolytes on the board and the cult of personality so they would revel in the ban hammer
Besada I never really saw in action. So I can’t judge All I remember was an avatar with an old looking man.

To add insult to injury, Cerium sold them out to a Stockholm based company.

They still can't see it?
Yup. And they are no different than any other corporation. And they even have a publicly traded stock, so you know their focus is profits to appease shareholders. They got the usual high ranking employees and board of directors.

Let's see how ballsy the mods are at criticizing corporate life and execs going forward.

I'm not familiar with all of them, but I gotta go with Amir0x for sure. Actual convicted pedophile, mom beater, and didn't he also scam gaffers out of money to buy drugs? Keep in mind, I try not to judge people struggling with addiction (I struggled with alcoholism until a few months ago myself), but taking advantage of people trying to help you is kinda shitty.

I can imagine MOBA doesn't want these totalitarian views and hate speech on their network. With the aqcuisition I can imagine they thoroughly checked the contents of that site, I would do it before splurging anyway.

So they either cleanse it, starting with replacing the mods and perhaps removing old content. Or they'll change the forum into something else. Perhaps rebranding it completely? Either way, I think the current rainbow avatar snowflakes lose out.

In terms of moderation's position, ERA is a leftist forum and then turns around to be a capitalist that exploited free labor. Hypocrites indeed.

To be more precise: for most of Era, the leftist ideals are an act. I know, because I'm leftist. They hide behind the pretense of a good fight (equity, salary raises, unions, no crunch, no toxic masculinity, inclusion, etc.) to throw mud on companies they already disliked to begin with, playing outrage for brownie points that the rest of the community and staff loves. But as soon as problems arise from companies, celebrities, brands they love, they happily brush all that away, either relativizing it ("could be worse", "other companies have this too", "what are you gonna do, nothing can ever change") or straight-up defending the slimy shit (we had several peeps in the Insomniac threads implying the worker may be lying - funny that, a website literally founded on the back of the #metoo movement conveniently not believing a victim).

Also look at the staff. You have Nepenthe constantly ramble about all white people being racists and constantly deflecting accusations against her as "it's only because I'm a black woman". You had Windrunner piss folks off with victim blaming islamophobic drivel that not only she discussed on Era, but also felt the need to double down on in Discords. You had staff (Transistor, I think?) come into a Naughty Dog thread to point out they will no longer tolerate people derailing hype threads with such uninteresting talk as crunching and workplace abuse at Era's favourite game developer.

It's easy for them to call boycotts on EA or Ubisoft or try to get Cyberpunk or Hogwarts banned: those are the kind of AAA games they actively despise anyway. Easy to score community cred by pretending you're making a huge stand against FIFA's lootbox-filled Ultimate Team if you last bought a FIFA a decade ago in a used game bin for a fiver and you don't give a fuck about the sport. But as soon as their own habits or tastes risk getting challenged by an uncomfortable revelation, they just brush it to the side, and suddenly all the leftist values they supposedly believe in stop existing, with them happily take talking points from the right-wing discussions too if it suits their narrative better.

It took me a long time to realize, but most of the core members and staff do not actually believe in the political ideologies the site enforces. It's just marketing, them wanting to be the de facto leftist gaming forum because most gaming communities don't gravitate that way and it's a huge untapped market. But at every outrage (or lack thereof), their real colours get shown more and more.
